No intention of infringing copyright. I do not own anything, all rights goes to the owner this purpose of the video was just for fun and entertainment.
I don't care what anyone says. This is one of the greatest scenes in movie history. Everything comes together in utter perfection, and not ONE WORD is spoken. The facial expressions, the cinematography (look at that black smoke billowing behind Darth), the slow motion and THE MUSIC. Good Lord, that music. Goosebumps every time, and it's been at least a million by now. I know it could never equal the original, but King Conan must be made. With the right people. And Milius' original script.
Agreed. There will only ever be one Thulsa Doom and this movie was perfect but I want to see more of this awesome world. I have bought a replica of this sword too and every time I look at it I think of this scene. 10/10 and as you say, proof that sometimes a scene is better without dialogue. The outfits were also amazing. Doom's battle Armour is just awe-inspiring!
as he is a serpent he did not blink. . . waooo
100% agreed
Milius and Basil Poledouris was the power behind to create Conan King: Crown of Iron. Could be even a better movie than this. A unique in his genre.
Nope.
The silence is what does it. No special effects, no cursing or witty banter. Just silence and pure emotion.
That and Basil Poledouris' Pitch Perfect musical score.
No special effects is the best. We should all be grateful that the actress playing Conan's mother was willing to die to give us this amazing scene.
Nowadays, this would get panned for being “too dark,” “too serious,” or “silly.” There’s no earnestness in movies anymore. Probably because we’ve lost that desire to get swept away in the movies because the Internet and these dumb phones we carry around have made the fantastical very boring now. It used to be a treat to go to the movies. Now it’s just like your living room. So sad
@@Whaddayamean13 THIS!!! I absolutely agree because it's sad but true.
This is what most films have forgotten. The power of saying nothing. Sometimes you can make a scene very powerful simply by not having a single word of dialog. Spoken words would only break the tension.
BruceWat Exactly
BruceWat well said Bruce.
BruceWat Especially with the help of an amazing soundtrack.
xxx xxx Compare to LOTR and Hobbit. Fucking hell. The first Conan film is where the big boys play. No elves and midget hobbits allowed.
Finrod Númenessë yep AGREED
James Earl Jones is so damn good in this.
RIP
@@mysterion5136 came here to say the same
Thank god this movie is now getting the respect it deserves. After its inital release, it was banished as just "Arnie's first real movie" and then later "just another dumb 80s flick". Once severely underrated, now Milius' genius story about what is quite simply humanity's brutal past; deeply entrenched in barbarism, sorcery and conquest , can be seen as a visionary piece of cinema.
In the name of crom.
+Dizzy Blu Not enough, in my opinion.
Apple Bee kids this days... hahah.
+Apple Bee Game of Thrones is the first to show insane amounts of ass and weird incest intercourse
Right!
not a single word spoken in this scene and it showed how powerful the emotions were. Conan is truly a classic masterpiece and must-watch movie
The last look Thulsa gives Conan's mom is so poetic. His look expresses, Do not fight, I am your death, Embrace me, and my blades swift kiss.
I just love the detail of her submitting with her neck moving forward like thats how great of an expression was put here
Are you drunk sir.... so poetic❤❤❤
Coward…that’s all.
The actress who plays Conans mom has living in Spain for a long time, since she was 20 (she was 30 when making Conan) and is know by the name of "Nadiuska" here, young Conan is also spanish actor, Jorge Sanz and the entire movie was filmed in Spain. Nadiuska born in Germany, her mother was from Poland and her father from Russia, and living in Spain for the most part as i said. Her story is very tragic. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in latest 90, she broke after recovering from the mental illness and she could never recover economically so she wandered around Madrid for a while, homeless. Also very impaired physically. I dont know how is doing today but its sad.
She was beautiful.
Nadiuska is a Playboy model and been in a number of sex comedies.
Wow.
@@joet7136 She was a goddess
Sad story, thanks for sharing
James Earl Jones was a bad ass actor, but of all his films I think in this scene he kicked ass with those Eyes.
He still is :)
Cold set of eyes, like General Grant
without the Darth Vader I would be a mouse
He's wearing contact lenses. His character is not supposed to be African, but of mixed race, with straight hair and blue eyes.
@@williamshaw9047 he both has blue eyes in real life and is of mixed race acenstry
What makes this scene even more intense, is knowing stuff like this happened alot throughout history, and still does.
It is a fantasy movie. But Robert E. Howard took a lot of real world history for his stories.
@@LordMalice6d9 we know
Yea, indeed it did and still does my friend
the music tells the story..they don't even have to speak
the picture tells the story... eh
all the bso is awesome
sad we didnt see how great a warrior and a Sorcorer THULSA DOOM is.😢
the movie shouldnt have a Near end FIGHT 1 on 1 with CONAN
Yes u r right
And the frames + body language of all the actors.
Perfect scene.
The actor who played child Conan really did an excellent job, too!
He is the spanish actor Jorge Sanz, es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Sanz
1:56 where JEJ slowly and deliberately lowers his eyes as he turns his head. Brilliant emotional conveyance and control. They could not have found a better actor to portray a villain so simultaneously charismatic and brutal.
I always get hung up on how these set of events took place in order for someone to capture that. Was it intended when they originally filmed it? Because nobody is moving in slow motion, that happens post production. Did the director intend for it to happen? Like did they get that specific shot with the intention of slowing it down and focusing on the eyes. So many aspects to account for that makes amazing things happen when you have the final edit.
@@drfunk1986 ok, actor reads script, says I'm an evil wizard, this is how I'd do it, director says ok, action. Why Mr.Jones made the big $$$.
@James Lamb ::: Best scene in the movie IMO. Sets the tone for what you're in for. REEE
That scene is worth more than the entire 2011 Conan movie
Of that, I agree.
Holy shit, I'm 23 years old and I didn't even know there *was* a 2011 Conan movie hahaha
RoboCop, total recall, you just can't remake the classics
We should make more prequels and sequels like we did with blade runner and Star Wars
That movie doesn't exist to me
I'm sorry. What is this 2011 movie remake that doesn't exist?
@Cyberdemon Mike come on dude. Is it really necessary to call someone an idiot?
Just love Thulsa Dooms moment with Conan after killing his mother. He stares him out, no threat, nothing. Fully in control of the situation, doesn't blink and expression hardly changes. Love JEJ, phenomenal actor. Deserves so much recognition!
The amount of emotions in this scene was just incredible. The loyalty of Thulsa's two right hand men, their admiration of the sword, the indecision on what to do in Conan's mother's eyes, the look of shock on Conan's face as his mother was killed, his expression of helpless hatred, and the look of appraisal on Thulsa's face as he looked at Conan. All this in a three minute scene.
+blockmasterscott And the beautiful thing is all of that was translated with "No Words Spoken." Excellent Direction.
+blockmasterscott When she first puts up the sword and he stares at her, that if pure fear spilling out of her, until all that is left is emptiness. She knows she's going to die and accepts it, it seems.
+blockmasterscott The music helps too.
Oh it does big time!
+Shyhoulud I'm not so sure. I think he hypnotized her. Notice his eyes changing colors.
They chose the perfect actor for Thulsa Doom. James Earl Jones has training in Shakespearean acting, and this role fits so many of his talents to a tee!
A full three minutes, with nothing but music and acting. No dialogue. No sound other than Basil Pouledaris's epic music. Can you imagine any movie today that would have a sequence like this? Amazing!
Noise. If today a film like this were made it would be utter noise.
It demands a real actor, like JEJ. Are there any left?
Conan: "You killed my Mother!"
Doom: "Just another Tuesday."
Even if I'd never seen James Earl Jones in anything before, this scene alone would be enough for me to know that he's one of the greatest actors alive.
Even if we know him as THE voice of Darth Vader, he’s good in this movie. Thulsa Doom as a character may has deviant from his origin as a Liche in original stories and never fought Conan but it’s a good kind of deviance
No words spoken yet this scene speaks epic volumes.
That's how movies used to be - lots of context and atmosphere. Did Thulsa Doom say "My name is Thulsa Doom I'm the villain just so everyone in the audience knows"?
@@oregonflatland the reason why there was no dialogue because these were Spanish actors who did not speak English. the movie was made in Spain
RIP James Earl Jones. Everyone will talk about your speaking voice, and they’re not wrong, but this is one of my favorite scenes of yours. ❤
The way he hypnotizes her and she drops her guard and exposes her neck amazing.
The first example we see of the power of flesh overcoming the power of steel.
James Earl Jones totally owned this flick.
Yes
Agree
The mastery behind this scene has to be taught as a mandatory class in every film school in the world!
They don't make them like this anymore.
Cxs3 nope thats why its a classic
Goddamnit I wish they didn't ruin the series. Milius was supposed to make a few of these, until he got fired and they made the HORRIBLE PG-13 sequel. This could have been one of the all time greatest trilogies.
because no one in their right mind would get a hair cut as ugly as that
they re-poop them though.
Took the words out my mouth
it's heartbreaking to see young Conan to continue to look at his hand after his mother fallen
In a way, Conan was born in this scene.
It might honestly be James Earl Jones's best acting performance, in this movie he conveys so much even without speaking. And the casting is perfect. Someone charismatic as him with a soothing voice and a gentle face like him makes him a very believable cult leader.
Yet he's able to hint at that darker side too, just in his facial expressions. I also love how in the final confrontation with Conan, you can notice just a slight tinge of fear, clear awareness that he WILL die if he fails to talk Conan out of it, but his confidence growing again when his words seem to have effect.
It's such a shame this is pretty much his only live action villain role. Yes, he's great as Darth Vader's voice, and he's known for his wonderful voice but it should not overshadow his amazing physical acting capabilities.
It's rare to see an actor be able to convey so much without words.
On top of that, James Earl Jones is just an amazing lovable guy in real life, one of the rare actors who is universally loved.
The genius of John Milius. Not a word spoken and everything changes. This establishes the rest of the story and seals Thulsa's doom (pun intended). Brilliant.
In a way you could say Doom was merciful, putting her under a spell and then instantly beheading her. The kid on the other hand . . . he's gonna have issues lol . . .
"You are unwise to lower to DEFENSES!"
Okay so: #1 This movie is badass. #2 Basil Poledouris is immortalized with the music composed for this movie. Without a doubt one of the best compositions entirely that I have ever heard. #3 Conan's mom is fucking gorgeous, I mean smoking hot. #4 The look in young Conan's eyes tells all. #5 The acting was almost like they were living during that time period. #6 Did I mention the soundtrack? Great fuckin movie
Keith Slatoff that Ost was epic
James Earl Jones is magnificent in this all time epic flick. A true actor and jewel of American cinematic theater. A virtuoso performance he gets not enough credit for. He brings the manipulative demi god Thulsa Doom to life and all too real. I think it's his greatest performance, and one of the greatest portrayals of a villain of all time.
tokr72 Well said!!! James Earl Jones really sold it! The menacing, yet charming look in his eyes, he really BELIEVED it. You could tell when he has you under the spell by his slightest eye movements which could have easily been overacted by anyone else.
+tokr72 I would have hired another actor. The physical of the manipulative archetype is always a esbelt, handsome type. His voice was indeed perfect for the cast, but still I think too many people remembered him as the voice of darth vader (evil father figure again), making the obvious conexion, thus exiting the movie. I enjoy inmensely his performance, anyway.
+tokr72 Gosh! I couldn't imagine having that voice. Any man with a voice like that commands respect and I am sure get more of what they want in life.
Somebody should do a video sketch of James Earl Jones ordering food at McDonalds with that voice, scaring the living shit out of everyone and getting his food exactly the way he wants it.
JEJ was brilliant in his research for this role, he claimed to have based his performance as Thulsa Doom on the American cult leader Jim Jones (who 'hypnotised' hundreds with his charm and charisma before finally killing his congregation and himself).
The stare here looks wise, merciful and benevolent, like a great king, and yet he is as cold as a snake underneath.
This softly-spoken monster is one of the most underrated villains in cinema history.
This scene traumatized me as a kid. The feelling of loosing a mother is unbearable. Very sad.
James Earl Jones;
Some of his greatest work included not seeing his face in one movie franchise & barely any lines in another.
What a legend
Not a single line of dialogue in this scene, just the music and the actors' expressions. A masterpiece.
Gets my vote for most 'heavy metal' scene in movie history.
Best comic book adaptation of all time. Rest in peace James Earl Jones
This is when conan was truly born.
The gift of fury
@J M NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Baptism by the blood of his fallen clan and the only true love of his life. he knew one day somehow he'd avenge the death of those he loved
3 minutes of no dialogue. Just visuals, music and a head chop noise. Best score ever made for a film.
GOT DAMN..James is the freaking Goat...one of his most underrated Characters..he has performed
Man, this scene NEVER gets old. This movie was ahead of its time. If anyone is a Skyrim fan, the music from this scene reminds me of Jeremy Soule's "Standing Stones" from the game. It's worth listening to. Every time I hear it it makes me think of this specific scene.
It's not "ahead of its time", it's timeless.
This is still the best movie score I've ever heard. No contest.
Speaking of Skyrim, there's a Conan soundtrack mod for it. The Kitchen Orgy music plays in the Skyrim taverns for example. You know, the scene & music right BEFORE Conan and his crew crash the party and kill that snake.
This is a prime example of how music tells the story and how it should help support the images. This is without question one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard in a film.
Just learned James Earl Jones left us today. Such a loss :'(
James Earl Jones, at his sublime best . The scene was shot without one word spoken . Classic materials.
I watched the commentary so I know Thulsa was indeed hypnotising Conan's mum. But I do like the fact that people have so many different interpretations of the events. Since there is no dialogue, every time I rewatch the scene, keeping a new interpretation in mind, it's as if I was watching a completely new tragedy unfold. "He deceived her by making her think that he's letting her go" "She realised there is no escape" "He was merciful" "He malignantly toyed with her" I am madly in love with this movie :>.
Thats why scene was so brilliant. I saw this originally middle of 80s and me and my friends had long chats what was that stare about. Great scene, great music and no dialogue necessary.
I think you're right. But I always wondered WHY? Why behead her, not sell her as a slave. Rewatching this, I realize he's still into the idea of steel and the sword as power. He recognizes the masterwork in Conan's father's sword, and basically just wants to test it out... You see after he beheads her he barely even looks at the corpse, just gazes at the sword for a while.
I think he's more fascinated with the act of wielding power through steel rather than the sword itself. He does kind of confirms it in the later scene where he makes the girl jump. After the headchop he's not looking directly at the sword, but you're right, he's not looking at the corpse either. It's like he's focusing on the flavour, tasting the power to end someone's life. But I don't think he's doing it maliciously. At best he believes it's right, at worst he just doesn't care one way or the other.
overthinking ffs...
My personal view is that as long as Doom was watching Conans beautiful mother he was incapable of beheading her. When he turn his sight elsewhere he found the strength to do it
In this scene James Earl Jones was silent, and like this scene we will hear him speak no more, but his influence will go on forever.
RIP
I wonder, was Thulsa-Doom literally luring her under his spell, or was it the kind of charisma and personal magnetism that one finds in cult leaders that caused her to lower her sword as he gazed into her eyes, perhaps causing her to think that he meant her no harm.
Thulsa Doom hypnotizes Conan's mother before killing her. Weird scene....
It’s part of the snake theme. Like Kaa from jungle book. The snake hypnotizes it’s prey before killing .
@@Xenaisthebusiness I think she waited long enough for the attack, she started to expect their lives would be spared. The pumping adrenalin which would have given her an edge with her own swing was decreasing as they were waiting too. The time for her to attack would have been during that first surge of fight or flight. After waiting that long her swing would have been weak and feeble, especially being confused as to what he was waiting for. You need conviction in your swing in order for it to hit it's mark deftly.
This scene always make me sad, it's so sad. Poor little boy, he was just a kid, and seeing his mother getting killed, he was in total shock, afraid and confused. Poor Conan, not just his mother, not just his father, but the entire village, HIS PEOPLE! It was total genocide.
RIP one of the greatest actors of all time
RIP James Earl Jones truly a gem in this day and age. 🪦😢
R.I.P James Earl Jones! The original villain 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Powerful scene - the cinematography and use of music
And it would last less than a second to make more room for explosions And every single facial expression would be completely over the top. Either that, or it would be filled with worthless prattling.
A wonderful example of how to execute a wordless scene.

Lmao, nah bruh u just trippin
IT WAS HILARIOUSLY RIDICULOUS
Thulsa Doom was a boss and was played perfectly by Jones. Love this movie.
Damn that woman was beautiful.
Frazetta girl she was
Melania Trump sort of looks like her
That's because shes Slavic as well. Nadiuska - born to polish and Russian parents. Melania is slovenian.
Roswicha Bertasha Smid Honczar - a.k.a. Nadiuska. A German-born actress from Bavaria.
Holy shit you're right. There's a lot of similarity.
RIP James Earl jones, I learned all your quotes in this movie by heart.
The way JEJ acts in the scene right before he lips off Conan's mom's head lulls you into a false sense that maybe, just maybe, he was going to let them go. And when her guard was down, he ruthlessly eliminated her.
The lost art of shutting the hell up and letting a scene speak for itself.
R.I.P. James Earl Jones. A wonderful scene brought to life by an incredible actor. You will be miss by all.....
Man...a scene like this is almost too highbrow for the source material. Goes to show what can result when people actually care about the movie they make. So much emotion packed into a single scene without any dialogue at all. The scene builds Thulsa to be almost sympathetic to the woman's plight, but climaxes with an act of sheer brutality. Says so much about the character while at the same time saying nothing at all.
And only James Earl Jones could still look completely badass and menacing with that haircut.
I never saw sympathy. I saw cold evil putting her in a trance. Taking away her will. Then ruthlessly slaying her in front of her son. All to show his powers.
This film was made by fans, for fans, of Conan.
@@Oracleofcrows there is a slight moment of it in his eyebrows i think

The Soundtrack is amazing.
RIP James Earl Jones. Passed away today Sept 9th, 2024.
Now I like both versions of Conan, old and new, but this is one of the strengths of the old one, the music and how John Milius was just able to brilliantly tell a scene without a single word of dialogue.
What does that have to do with the comment?
Tadicuslegion78 Remake was shit. Everyone knows it.
The remake was atrocious and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as the original.
Yeah shots like this are lost on this generation
Three minutes long, not a word spoken, the music, the facial expressions back and forth among everyone in the scene tell the whole story up until the actual strike. This is how great films are made.
Not going to lie.... Conan's got one hot mom!
One of my favorite scene from this epic, beautiful and badass movie! The way Thulsa Doom hypnotises Conan's mother and beheads her after the slaughter of the village is powerfuf and so intense! Conan didn't even cried. He was just profundly shocked seeing his mother falling.
There are three awesome minutes without a word said. Holywood should understand the genious of using this kind of silence! The gorgeous and emblematic peplum-like music by Basil Pouledouris in the movie reflects perfectly the harsh, decadent and cruel Hyborian Age in it whole magnificence! A true masterpiece even if we know nothing about Conan's childhood in the great and impetuous Robert E. Howard books, apart that Conan was born on a battlefield and that his father was a smith.

For the first time, after watching this very scene countless times...I realized young Conan could see the lie in Thulsa Dooms eye. His eyes were screaming, “mom, what are you doing??” Powerful scene.
This scene shows what a master actor James Earl Jones is. He said so much but didn’t utter a word. The kid did an amazing job as well.
Maybe the most memorable movie scene of my entire childhood. Epic nostalgia, epic music, epic scene, epic movie!
Such a powerful scene. No talk, great music and acting. It's really emotional. Conan was traumatized and shocked for a long time. This is why he almost never spoke.
And this folks is the origin story of Hyborian Batman.
Seriously though, I just love Rexor in this movie. Such a badass right-hand man to Thulsa Doom. Thorgrim on the other hand often looks like he has no clue what's going on.
***** Robert E. Howard never wrote much of an origin story for Conan. In his first story we meet teenage Conan on the run, but almost nothing about the situation he escaped from.
pinz2022
What story was that? I'm still only halfway through the Chronicles of Conan which is arranged in a non-chronological order and instead in the order Howard wrote/published the stories, beginning with Phoenix on the Sword where he's already king of Aquilonia.
+Wurzelknecht It's difficult to figure out why John Milius added Thorgrim (he was not in his first draft), he doesn't contribute a lot, thematically. Anyway, Rexor is a very interesting character for he is what Conan could have been, had he been seduced by Doom.
+pinz2022 He talks about his youth fighting against incursions into Cimmeria by the men of the northern forts of Aquilonia. I think it's in Beyond the Black River where he mentions this. But he is already 12 or so I think.
Rexor was played by Ben Davidson ad Thorgrim as Sven Ole Thorson, both were weight lifters and strength athletes who worked out with Arnold, they were the real deal as far as genuine strongmen, very beleivable. Also the "pictish scout" who leads them to conan's village was Franco COlumbu, another of Arnolds work out/weightlifter bodybuilder buddies
Ah, but Conan takes Thulsa Doom’s head with the same blade. What goes around, comes around.
I love this scene ✊🏾
This is film art. America needs to relook again into how films should be made and bring back the exquisite artistic story telling that invokes the mind
