Toy Physics - Part 3: Waddling Duck

- Dr. Dave and Dr. Tom explain the physics of a wooden waddling duck toy involving friction, impact, energy transfer, and dynamics.
This toy was purchased at: www.eurotoyshop.com
A technical analysis can be found in the technical paper:
Leine, R.I., Van Campen, D.H and Glocker, Ch., "Nonlinear dynamics and modeling of various wooden toys with impact and friction", Journal of Vibration and Control, Vol. 9, pp. 25-78, 2003.
More engineering and physics-related video demonstrations can be found here:

Great for a Baby Dolittle Neighborhood Animals remake.
I watch this on 2018 and still miss play with these toys
My two-year-old was mesmerized by this video. Of course, during the last slowmo, it was the frame info letters that mesmerized him - but hey...
It's pretty awesome to see physics discussed like this - people rarely stop to consider how interesting the motions of normal objects are.
@NigelLoller
We didn't time the periods, but you can easily do this with the video, especially in the super-slow-motion segments that have time displayed.
@pofrani
FYI, I found the article and added a reference and link to the video description. Check it out.
@fdynamics
Thanks. You just made my day. It's not easy to impress a two-year old.
The video wasn't meant to be a comedy, but I'm glad you like it.
I just added the URL to the video description.
FYI, I just added the URL of where the toy was purchased to the video description.
@pofrani
You're welcome .. and congrats!
Try to post a video (with reply to this video) so we can see your work.
@pofrani
I think there was a technical article in the "American Journal of Physics" or in "Physics Teacher;" although I don't have a link. If you can track down the article, the analysis might provide some guidance.
Dr Dave. You're limiting yourself with the advent of scrictly pool related videos 😂 I can see you as a multi million sub channel, all things physics! You had a jump start appearing in Neil's podcast. I can truly see it becoming a huge success. Btw, thanks for incorporating snooker in your open bridge section of the bridge video. The segway was well played!
In the past, I did more physics and engineering stuff, but I feel I have a lot more to contribute in pool. The list of video topics I want to cover is already too long to do in one lifetime. Regardless, I appreciate the vote of confidence. Thanks.
@@DrDaveBilliards definitely appreciate everything you contribute to the pool world, Dr. D. Looking forward to many more years
@@everythingbobbywolfe Stay tuned. I have plenty more coming.
Muito bom o trabalho.Parabéns
Pretty much slow-mo guys! The vids are just cool and stuff.
Fantastic set of videos...thanks for posting...In any of your tests did you time the drop between two known points? duck or woodpecker..I woudn't mind betting on accurate repeatability..(thinking of using this for something else!)
"here's a close-up in super slow motion" hahahaha.
My little nieces would go nuts if I gave this to them.
Porfavor me indica en español como va construdo por dentro gracias de chile hermoso trabajo
OMG this is adorable
Sorry, but I don't know. I will try to find out from the person who owns them.
If anybody else knows, please share the info.
WOW were do you get them!!
"The center of gravity of the duck body is almost directly above the pivot point for that back leg."
The duck is much happier going down a straight ramp. :)
gracias por el video :)
Isaac Ugalde González l,
Interesting videos.........
can someone tell me what does he say between 31~36 seconds? thank you
is saying that the centre of gravity is directly above the back leg, thus making the duck stable in a flat surface.
Make the ramp WAY longer. Cool toy.
Gak habis pikir...pembuatnya pinter bgt
PERPETUAL MOTION!!!
Thanx for this video! How about this rampwalker? How does it work? I saw the toy on this youtube video :WALKING ROBOT-ROBOT ANDADOR ...
how do you make this toy, i want to make it for my A levels, but i'm unsure of how it is constructed ....
Scott Davey i don't know. It was purchased. See the video description above for more info.
A 3-D world is much too scary for a physics duck!
Not bad REALLY interesting
Boa tarde amigo, muito bom os seus video, gostarai de receber o projeto do gangura para que possa fazer obrigado.
Lol the duck is so cute.
this would make more sense if you made a quacking sound as it went down the ramp !!
deathkillercabs I like the way you think.
Put it on a treadmill at the angle and at the speed that the duck "waddles." Boom, mind blown......
Agreed. That would be mind blowing. It would look like a stationary "moon walk" (think Michael Jackson).
@DrDaveBilliards lol that would be pretty kool
Hagame el favor como consigo la plantilla en PDF
Sorry, but the only information I have is when is in the video description.
Pure physics
Wow
Wowww 1000 fps
Sir I want to make business these toys can you help me
Your title says 'waddling duck'. But it doesn't waddle .
Pls, how do I make it waddle?
Thanks
You will need to use your imagination. :)
Ready in 0:48
for some reason i had a felling that something was gonna pop up and scream at the end of the video
It's more like the Curly Shuffle!
Where do i get these toys ?
The link for where we purchased it is in the video description with other info.
DrDaveBilliards ?

I’m getting the hedgehog version of that
I want this toy for my son om.
That duck is awesome.
I could have at least made the duck explode and have blood go everywhere in super-slow motion. Maybe next time. :)
Now i know why my life is a mess, I didn't receive a ducktoy during childhood. I could have been an engineer or better, a duck toy maker.
All video made by Ajinkya And Thanks Alot you're compliments
Quack quack quool
The slowmotion is not that super though
fairal123 It was more “super” in 2008 when this video was filmed. Now, anybody can get good slomo with their smartphone.
play at 2x playback
1.5x is much better.
how i end up here
Kenny Lau You must be smart ... or just lucky. :)
