  • Dr. Dave and Dr. Tom explain the physics of a wooden waddling duck toy involving friction, impact, energy transfer, and dynamics.
This toy was purchased at: www.eurotoyshop.com
A technical analysis can be found in the technical paper:
Leine, R.I., Van Campen, D.H and Glocker, Ch., "Nonlinear dynamics and modeling of various wooden toys with impact and friction", Journal of Vibration and Control, Vol. 9, pp. 25-78, 2003.
More engineering and physics-related video demonstrations can be found here:

My two-year-old was mesmerized by this video. Of course, during the last slowmo, it was the frame info letters that mesmerized him - but hey...
It's pretty awesome to see physics discussed like this - people rarely stop to consider how interesting the motions of normal objects are.

We didn't time the periods, but you can easily do this with the video, especially in the super-slow-motion segments that have time displayed.

FYI, I found the article and added a reference and link to the video description. Check it out.

Thanks. You just made my day. It's not easy to impress a two-year old.

I think there was a technical article in the "American Journal of Physics" or in "Physics Teacher;" although I don't have a link. If you can track down the article, the analysis might provide some guidance.

Dr Dave. You're limiting yourself with the advent of scrictly pool related videos 😂 I can see you as a multi million sub channel, all things physics! You had a jump start appearing in Neil's podcast. I can truly see it becoming a huge success. Btw, thanks for incorporating snooker in your open bridge section of the bridge video. The segway was well played!

In the past, I did more physics and engineering stuff, but I feel I have a lot more to contribute in pool. The list of video topics I want to cover is already too long to do in one lifetime. Regardless, I appreciate the vote of confidence. Thanks.

Fantastic set of videos...thanks for posting...In any of your tests did you time the drop between two known points? duck or woodpecker..I woudn't mind betting on accurate repeatability..(thinking of using this for something else!)

is saying that the centre of gravity is directly above the back leg, thus making the duck stable in a flat surface.
