We traded and probably mixed some blood with them on the coastal regions, but seriously we arent vikings. If you wonder then why vikings didnt conquer us instead, there are couple easy answers: Firstly there wasnt really any finnish "kingdom" to conquer, nothing too fancy to loot besides furs - and secondly the finnish people were exactly willing to give the little they have for some foreign raider - viking or otherwise. I mean giving up meant death by nature anyways. ...talking of the finnish nature, unsurprisingly winter, has always been grim and hard. If you wouldnt take care of yourself, youd simply end up dead. So because of nature and the fact that Finland has been pretty sparsely populated the finns become independent and strong willed, but also very honest and trusting - because you would need to be able to count on the few neighbours you had. And guess what makes good soldiers? No-nonsense folk who are focused on getting shit done, got ton of guts and take care of their own. Certainly the modern world has changed people, but the core is still there. If youre curious how finnish people actually did in other wars besides the WW-period, id suggest you check "hakkapeliitta" - finnish light cavalry which served in swedish army during the thirty years war. Apparently opponents found them unnerving as opposed to constant battlefield shouting back then - the hakkapeliitta would usually start their charge with "Hakkaa päälle!" (usually translated: "Cut them down!") and then onwards fight in silence. ..."sounds" finnish enough lol Arguing about the present day "whose army is the best" is pretty moot in my opinion. Nuke would ruin anyones day, but frankly there isnt really anything to nuke in Finland. We are also so close to Russia, that i doubt their would bother nuking us to begin with. If Russia (..like seriously, which other country? -__-) were ever to attack Finland in "full force", yeah i suppose we would eventually be occupied. But that occupation would be very costly one indeed: Most finnish men go to military service and the number of women in armed service is increasing all the time, thus we have pretty much the ideal backbone for guerilla warfare. Mentality, culture and religionwise finns are russian are quite divided - so Putin 4.0 or whomever would have hard time appealing to the regular finn to give in. In the past Sweden tried to make us swedish, which didnt work. Then Russia tried to make us russian, couple times actually - and none of that worked either. And that is because the finnish people knew we were neither - we were and are Finns.
