- Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man (From "Live At The Royal Albert Hall")
Dusty Springfield is Britain's greatest ever pop diva and the possessor of one of the finest and most soulful voices of all time. This concert, filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1979 in the presence of HRH Princess Margaret, captures Dusty at the height of her career.
Billy-Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered around and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
Out through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows to my surprise
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, he was
Bein' good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come and tell me everythings alright
He'd kiss and tell me everything is alright
Can I get away again tonight?
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, lord no's he was
How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
Learnin' from each other's knowin'
Lookin' to see how much we're growin’
An the only one who could ever reach me was
A son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was
The only one who could ever reach me
he was a sweet talkin'son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
I guess he was the son of a preacher man
the only one was a sweet talkin' son of a preacher man
The only one ...

she's singing
son of a preacher man.
this is a great song. Dusty rox =]
..driving around California this lady would come on my radio with that great voice..thanks Dusty RIP...
Theres is no1 that can compare to DUSTY!
she got SOUL
just the most perfect voice ever, no woman can touch her talent again.xx
I love this song.
Thank you.
George Vreeland Hill
What a talented artist....the voice, the mood....terrific performance!
Yes, love her clowning around, too.
Real soul.I like this version even better than her original hit.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't she born in England, of Irish descent? Makes no difference to me, cause she was great no matter what nationality she was. I remember hearing her when I was a kid, singing " I only want to be with you", and fell in love with her then.
Good gravy, this woman could sing the phone book and you'd be compelled to listen! One of the all-time greats. RIP, Ms. Springfield. And thank you.
tough crowd!
great
Hits from the boooooooooooooooooooooong :D
Exactly. :)
@jack102248 you're so right! only WOW!!!!!
Rusty at her best!!
What I want to know: How come in the few shots of the audience is everyone sitting? How do you not get up and dance to a song like that?
I would have loved to be Billy Ray
oh girl, this made me laugh, but you are so right LOL ;)
true true... but...
...the time when this was made it's called pop... what Joss sang, like I said is not in pop but blues style :D
Dusty rest in peace. This song was kick ass in1968 And still is a fill good song to tihs day. And Dusty isa real M.I.L.F
SONS OF ANARCHY
Cypress Hill *-*
Shame really, as a number of performers enjoy the spirited emotional response to their efforts.
Polite clapping and stiff upper lip and all is all quite, quite, but a rollicking crowd is great too.
Dusty's talents were definately capable of exciting the emotions and she was deserving of the experience of their jubilent release .
...a LassieSongsUSA!
@st4focus4mk4 me too
Jeg kan godt lide "Son Of A Preacher Man" med Dusty Springfield
Rassamdul...got news for ya, Dusty is a classic between the UK and The states, over rated????

Baby -
I'm ALL YOURS ---
WOMAN your Soooo
too much Honey - What a Lady
Im 15 and these kind of songs are my favourite.
I get really sick of when somebody asks me what my favourite songs are and I say, 'The Doors, Ray C, Dusty Springfield, the Beatles etc' and they go 'Who are they?'
I swear I was born into the wrong generation, music these days is a load of shit.
You’re an old soul. 💙
"Just water, I wish it was...whoa!" Fabulous.
I'm here 'cause of Dusty, she should be Dame Dusty! :)))
I love Dusty's voice! It's pure! (May she rest in peace.)
" "Just water, I wish it was...whoa!" Fabulous." Thought the same things....Fabulous indeed!
I always thought she was from the South, and it was only recently I learned she is British. What a voice.
Artists like her don't come around very often. This is the very definition of "a class act". I was so very saddened when I heard of her death. The world is richer for her musical legacy and poorer for her passing.
This woman was the personification of class.
God she could sing,& she was sooo hot R.I.P.DUSTY
Love her voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear sweet Mary, sleeping with the angels, ♥️🇬🇧♥️
What a talented artist....the voice, the mood....terrific performance!
Who else is listening to Dusty? I LOVE this song. Dusty was the best!!! October 8, 2020 Lilly
Listening 5/4/21 & into eternity!
Dusty looking like 10 gazillion dollars here... thin, radiant, healthy, of fine voice (per usual)... possibly the greatest female singer of all time.
The Mighty Queen of Blue Eyed Soul, "DUSTY SPRINGFIELD!"
Second that! Dusty had soul in bucket loads and then some! She is still the greatest British singer ever--well, if you wish, Irish! Either way, splendid talent!
Dusty was by far the greatest singer. That came out of england! Her voice was unstopable! She was an absolute memorizing woman with a voice like silk! Love her!Rip dusty.
That audience is from an alternative universe
The talent and a class act
youtube
She was beautiful too!
I realize it was a different time, but was the audience catatonic or something?
The audience was attentive.
my favorite type of audience.
I can see the performer.
I can hear the performance.
I do get what you're saying.
I went to see the animals in a small venue. I could occasionally see Eric but, never hear him. The entire audience was singing.
I paid for Eric but received et al.
still, I know what you are saying!
This was at Royal Albert Hall, so probably a stodgy crowd.
One of the greatest singers of her generation.
Legendary song by Legendary Woman...
Love her voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Top Class 🎼 What a voice
We LOVE you Dusty. She will always be one of the best there ever was!!! 😍😍😍
if only the singers of today are like ms springfield....
The only one that could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man :)
What a talented artist....the voice, the mood....terrific performance!
I'm here 'cause of Dusty, she should be Dame Dusty! :)))
The only one that could ever teach me
Dream on, but each to his own, Dusty owns this one!
Cheryl Cole, Lay gaga, Lily Allen - eat your heart out. This is singing
Thank god they used to sing songs like this one!!!
I love Dusty's voice! It's pure! (May she rest in peace.)
2022 and still a hit for me
Only one Dusty: period!
Her song “The Look Of Love” : that’s untouchable and some have tried pulling off a copy and paste moment like Microsoft word.
RIP Dusty: thanks for jamming a tune out with the Pet Shop Boys before your departure. But your music lives on: Dusty in Memphis, A Girl Called Dusty, Where Am I Going, and so on!
A Ko: "Nothing Has Been Proved", her last big hit, offered by The Pet Shop Boys, is a brilliant piece on how to tell a story...
she had it going on! and man did she know how to work that amazing voice! rock on dusty, YOU GO GIRL!
true beauty shines on ( not to mention a hell of a talent ) the total package . Britney, Gaga,
take notice and a lesson on how to have an eternal career !
The very epitome of blue-eyed soul! A true classic.
What's wrong with the audience? Even for the English they are lifeless...I didn't think there could be worse than the Japanese, but this lot take the rock out of rock and roll. Great song though !
I was a little girl back in the 60's. Knew she was English...her voice, smooth as silk.
LOVE ANYTHING DUSTY SINGS SHE IS THE GREATEST NO ARGUMENT.
+Chris Helme Janis Joplin
Sounds as good if not better than the recording, something that you seldom get these days.
Top stuff! *****
what a woman...
I came here to wash that little mini me Hollie's American Idol version of this classic out of my head. No one should ever do this song except Dusty. Retire it.
Joss Stone has a pretty voice but Dusty had class-and soul. That's what counts.
I hope she she gets a decent and honorable treatment of her life story.
I heard Kristen Chenowith was producing something
Love Dusty, really love the whole "Dusty in Memphis" record.
Still the greatest.
Great song! One of the greatest singers of all time. Killer performance!!! Superb post. Thanks for sharing this!
hisholyhoviness, you really need to do research before posting your ill-founded comments here. She did many Irish, Italian and British songs, as well as American. Furthermore, she did not just "show up at the studio". She was given a free hand in the production and arrangement of her records at Phillips by the BRITISH producer, Johnny Franz. She just wasn't credited due to the prevailing sexism of the time. Furthermore, SHE decided what songs to do.
hits from the bong
A sensual and great singer-beautiful women in every way!!
Raw talent. Pity about the brain-dead crowd
Love Dusty!
@IIIIdepechemodeIIII- she's 40 here and I think she looks great. She lived a rough life and it eventually took it's toll on her looks and her voice, but she never lost the quality that made her famous in the first place (as later songs like "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" and "Where is a Woman to Go" prove.... )
Very few singers period. With Dusty, it's not about sounding black or sounding white and she didn't really use the gospel techniques that signify soul these days (the Aretha school, which was great when Aretha did it. Now, not so much.). She'd just go deeper into the emotional content of a song than other singers, whether it was Bacharach or Motown.
"Just water, I wish it was...whoa!" Fabulous.
I'm here 'cause of Dusty, she should be Dame Dusty! :)))
Delicious voice👏😜😜👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😜😜😜
Great song, it never, ever gets old
From the great, great show at the Royal Albert Hall.Get it,rent it.
born in the 80s, i lead the human race high-wasted listening to springfield
She owns this song.
the timing, the voice,...the soul. gone too soon.
the saddest thing about this video is the boring peope in the crowd - what a tune - what a performance.
Dusty was one of a kind....
great to see im not the only one who is here because of the same reason.
I'd give up body parts to have a one stand with Dusty Springfield. You can book it, Dano!
D.I.Y. JACK, BUKEM DANO.
Does it matter what her sexual orientation is.NO.The woman can sing thats all that matters
Voz incrível, um puta vozeirão maravilhoso! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😍🥰❤️
Love Dusty!!!!!
Unforgettable artist
I love Dusty's voice! It's pure! (May she rest in peace.)
Love Dusty!
what a woman...
That crowd is so dead, it's Dusty Springfield people....She is amazing!
More like respectful, unlike the hooligans that go to shows today that won’t stfu and ruin it for those around them
Boy, did Dusty show that this english lass could sing Memphis soul! Rest in peace Dusty, you are missed.
what a great classy sexy woman with the best voice .............RIP
