Stam Fine Reviews takes in a deep breath to look at Wild Wild West for the arbitrary reason that the film came out 25 years ago. Wild Wild West resurrected a 60's spy/western hybrid series as a summer blockbuster, reuniting the director and star of Men in Black and turned out to be an expensive movie that didn't quite light the box office on fire. It was successful, just not successful enough to recoup its enormous budget.
Stars Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek, Ted Levine. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
I love this movie as a kid. Much later in life I would find out through the power of internet that people hated it.
It's okay, you were just a kid then 😉
Still like it. It's an entertaining movie
I wasn't a kid any more but I still loved this movie.
I also was a fan of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I really must have bad taste.
@@bart2019 Well, that's not for me to agree with you...
I recall in junior high that my friend and I were entertained by it. I didn’t know it was so universally hated until I was older. I just thought it was movie theater entertainment fluff, no dumber than the next blockbuster
I watch this movie in the theaters as a kid, I think for some reasons the giant mechanical spider and all of loveless machine just fascinate me and I enjoyed the entire movie and had a great time cause I guess giant mechanical spider looks super cool as a kid.
Ahtal Ka vibes
hello my fellow giant mechanical spider lover. I'm 31 and I don't remember a single thing from this movie other than giant mechanical spider. It was definitely cool. If it wasn't cool I wouldn't still remember it.
@@spartan456 spinny boob tassels
that's the only other thing I remember.
Did you get the sun glasses they gave out at the movie? They gave out cheap sunglasses like he wears in the movie. You could chose from gold or silver. I got gold. Watched the stupid movie, wearing the silly sunglasses the whole movie
I know I’m in the minority here, but I have always enjoyed this movie. I never got the hate it gets.
i KNOW RIGHT? This movie had it all but critics are snobbish %^^$$## son's of $$#@@%^
@@LuisLopez-zh9kh most people critics and audience alike didn't like it
To be fair to Will Smith, he did admit many years later that he would have ruined The Matrix had he accepted the role at that point in his career.
Yeah, say what you will about Keanu's brand of underacting, but he ended up being absolutely perfect for Neo.
Ah, I was actually trying to remember which famous movie he turned down to do WWW, and I thought it was Titanic. The thing is, he would have ruined The Matrix at ANY point in his career.
That's exactly right. We have to be thankful for this movie, otherwise the matrix would suck and John Wick would be a fever dream
He had enough hits in thee 90s, so it's okay haha
I did not know that fact until this video, but they really matrix dodged a bullet on that one. It would have just been a dated late 90's Will Smith movie instead of the timeless classic it has become.
I saw this in the theater. At one point this guy in the row in front of me stood up and said, "Horseshit!" and then walked out.
Everytime I see that giant, mechanical spider, Kevin Smith's voice echoes through my head, "...But then all of a sudden, like a giant-f*cking-spider shows up!"
Exactly what I was thinking, Jon Peters and his ridiculous giant spider.
Ha! You beat me to it! It's here if anyone wants to watch it: ua-cam.com/video/Wo2KB1dEDdk/v-deo.htmlsi=6pWhlLylyUZM2Ffa Say what you want about Kevin Smith as a director, but he is a fantastic lecturer and storyteller. His interview of Mark Hamill on his "Fatman on Batman" podcast years ago (about 3 hours long!) is one of the best interviews - period - I have ever heard.
Screw the internet haters. Wild Wild West is a fun movie. So many one liners came from it.
the movie was a massive flop when it came out lol don't act like its just an internet thing
@@sponish0 Bruh I don't care if it "was a massive flop." People can enjoy things that other people don't like. Get over it.
@@mutley0130 that’s fine I’m just saying it’s not just internet haters it was hated in real life 😂
@@sponish0 cool bro, I'm happy for you
the best thing about this movis is the fantastic clamour for Wild wild west 2 etc.
Back then I would have watched Salma Hayek reading the newspaper for two hours (in her underwear) so I actually paid to watch this film.
I paid to see it in the theater and she was the only thing I remember. Everything else I tried hard to forget.
The Blackadder cut was genius. Top work Stam Fine.
This movie was amazing and every shot in this critique proves it, super cool!
I liked it as a kid. However, now that I’m a wise adult who has set aside childish things, I still like it
Salma Hayek, Bai Ling and Musetta Vander were hot in corsets and that's the only good thing about this shitty movie. Funniest thing is that Robert Conrad, the original James West, went to the stage and accepted those multiple Golden Rapsberries this movie rightfully collected. Good Show, Bob!
Maybe, it's because I was 9 when I watched this movie in theatre but i always remember it being good.
It is good. This guy is literally british
Sheesh. Remember that soundtrack?
@@jxw457 No, don't be silly.
@@Gobbersmack it was literally a commercial and critical failure.
@@sponish0 That's your opinion.
Wild Wild West... A 170 million movie tie in to the best pop song of 1999 of the same name!
Criminally underrated film, loved it as a kid and still do as an adult.
thats just called nostalgia, its bad you liked it as a kid cause of the cool burger king toys and toy comercials.
This movie is hilarious and I implore anyone who hasn't seen it to watch it, I never stopped laughing or grinning.
You’re an easy laugh
@@recessional5560 OK?
I do love Kenneth Branagh in this movie, he’s eating more scenery that a giant spider at a fly convention lol
That's the thing. It only really works when everyone else buys into it being that kind of movie.
Fun Fact: Richard Donner (who directed original episodes of Wild Wild West) was going to direct the movie with Mel Gibson as Jim West, but they left because dealing with Jon Peters was too crazy and they made Maverick instead… I would of loved to have seen there take on the movie
I think there's a key difference between the adaptations the highlights the problems with WWW very well. Maverick was very much in the style of the original, with a bit more action and sillier comedy for a modern movie audience. It never strayed from the concept of gambler who'd rather just mind his own business getting wrapped up in stuff and having to use his wits, rather than guns, to solve his problems. They understood that the charm of the lead actor is what made the show and and would make the movie.
While he had a varied career and did play against type at time (e.g. Woodrow Call in Streets of Laredo), Maverick was pretty much Garner's bread and butter character. He played variations is Support Your Local Sheriff, The Great Escape, and The Rockford Files (which he pretty much described as Maverick in the present day).
Maverick is a much better film than WWW,saw both in the cinema,WWW had a TOO long intro musical score/scene,I couldn't wait till it ended. LOL. TRULY enjoyed Maverick tho, nice action scenes, good humor and not TOO silly situations that made me chuckle or laugh.
The Scene where Gordon is chewing West out will never stop being funny to me.
"JIIIIIIIIM WEEEEEEEEST!!"
Any movie with mid 1990s Salma Hayek is worth watching. End. Of. ❤
Honestly this movie isnt bad. I can understand people not liking the western scifi mix, which made me love the movie. It was like mib but a western and no aliens.
This is wild west crossed with steampunk, for what a sci-fi western mix would look like, watch a TV Show called "Firefly" with Nathan Fillion playing the main character
@@AleksandrPodyachev steampunk is just scifi set in the past.
@@AleksandrPodyachev though its commonly associated to the victorian era.
You know what..? You actually convinced me to finally watch this movie. It looks like a very specific kind of bad. It's like the creators were convinced that every single trick they have will be SO COOL when they end up being laughably lame - but at the same time the jokes are not self-aware and they keep on coming thinking they're the best jokes ever.
This isn't "so bad it's good" movie, it's "so lame it's badass" it seems.
I'm probably one of the few people here to recognize the "RCA Victor - His Master's Voice" sight gag. I didn't think it was clever nor funny but at least I spotted it.
It’s a very silly and fun film, it’s in the same vein as the Brendan Fraser mummy. It doesn’t take itself seriously and is a good time.
I'm a big fan of the original series. This film is not Wild Wild West. About the only thing I can say good about it is, the costumes were spot on great. HOT HOT MESS is a good name for it.
Jim West was one of the first Characters to get Race Swapped in Movies.
The TV show was original, stylish, even hip, especially those superb opening credits. But this thing. . .
This movie was a desecration of the TV series.
Made tons of money?
I was 8 when this movie came out, but I liked it. I watched it many times back then and enjoyed it. Many kids my age did.
I don't care what anyone says this movie is still a guilty pleasure for me I like it
This is similar to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in that both were steampunk-ish concepts with lots of potential and good ingredients on paper, but just somehow still turn out bad.
WWW really fought it out against early internet domain names.
I remember seeing this at the movies and loved it as a six year old boy. The actor who played Loveless did a fantastic job and his performance is very underrated in my opinion and I’m sure others…. Also Will Smith did some of the soundtrack and those tracks were always on the radio back then around 99’-00’.
What was so frustrating about this movie is that it completely ruined the perception and legacy of the original 60s tv show which I was a fan of watching in syndicated reruns. It’s a great premise with cool characters and a really unique steam punk aesthetic that was just completely shat upon thanks to this. It’s now an IP that no one will touch or revisit even though I think it could still make for a great film or series.
No, it's better left alone. If dumb studio execs shat this out in the 90s, just imagine what they would do to it now.
@@LifeWithPico Like with most IP cash grabs the problem with this film and others is that they wind up being made by people that have no real affinity or love for the material. You don’t need to be a fan to make an adaptation work but when it comes to an IP that has become as niche or as tarnished as this one it can only remotely work if the creative team behind it actually gives a fuck about the story and IP.
@@langleymneely You nailed it!
Lost in Space already came back to Netflix despite a lackluster 90s reboot. Wild Wild West will be back, too. It's only a matter of time.
I always liked this movie and I'm not stopping now
The only Wild Wild West worth mentioning...aside form the original...is The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. HINT. HINT. HIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNT.
I still wear my Burger King glasses on the reg
Will Smith has dressed up so often as a dancing girl I'm starting to think it's a stipulation of his contracts.
I have a soft spot for
This movie, since I grew up with it. But compared to the show I can see why it was hated.
Two biggest problems were the outlandish steampunk conventions and the two stars both thinking they were the lead and the other guy was the sidekick.
Jesus… I never realized at the time how many of these tv shows from the 50s and so on were made into movies. A few that pop in my head The Saint, Maverick, McHale’s Navy, The Brady Bunch, Starkey and Hutch, Dukes of Hazard, Chips, Swat… good god…
You forgot The adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) with Robert De Niro and a truly forgettable version of I Spy. All but Maverick lost more than what they cost to make.
Dragnet, Beverly Hillbillies, The Mod Squad, Bewitched.....
This movie and the Burger King collab were my life back in the day
Loved this film as a kid, the PC game was the worst thing tho! Let's face it, we are all glad Will did this instead of Matrix! LOL Do LOVE the theme song though... it's a bop!
I've always loved this movie, as a kid and adult! It may have its issues but it's still a fun action movie.
25 years later, still forgot this exists. But The Phantom Menace dominated that year (and Summer).
In the TV series, Loveless was played by the superb Michael Dunn. This guy, however. . .
I love the film and my daughter watched the dvd of it a few times.
Good review. I think the main culprit here is whoever wrote the screenplay. Effects good, actors capable, costuming & music fine -- script abysmal, deeply unfunny, and crass as hell: cringe before cringe.
I feel like watching this movie would make me feel like I have the flu.
This movie slaps, a real breath of fresh ass. I love it.
Very much apart of my childhood lol i loved this movie 😂❤
This movie was awesome as a kid and going back to it now its just a fun turn you brain off time
Loved this as a kid and the burger king toy tie in 😂
I always kinda enjoyed this film, and never understood the lambasting it got.
The song Wild Wild West sampled a Stevie Wonder tune, so of course it slaps. :D Also, Will Smith is such a charismatic actor (his real-life antics notwithstanding) that this movie is still watchable, even if not very good. Plus...Salma Hayek.
Why _on earth_ has Stam still only got ~60k subs. Mystifying.
Yeah but seeing this as 6 year old I personally thought it went crazy and I loved it. Again, I was 6. It’s dumb fun nostalgia for me
As a 10 year old smack dab in the target demographic, I can assure you this was the perfect 1960s Friday night action TV show. Especially in the James Bond era.
Good luck making that into the 1999 summer movie blockbuster.
You're ten years old but you remember the 1960s? Are you Marty McFly?
I never understood the hate for this movie, its fun
As a kid i loved this movie
Wild Wild West was a good movie. It will be appreciated someday. There will definitely be a stage version to hit Broadway.
Wild Wild West was a cult TV series and still had reruns on French TV in the 90s (Star Trek, by comparison, had much less reruns in France).
The most baffling decision was to not use the original music theme, and a similar intro sequence than the TV-series. They were so iconic.
this was a better movie than the majority of movies made today...
The best reaction I heard about this film was a review that was titled, “Men in Bleccch!”
Sounds like a Mad magazine movie parody.
Completely disagree. This is a great movie. A fun, "what the heck comes next" popcorn movie. I don't care if critics hated it. It is so much fun.
This movie has and always will rule
My corvid brain is drawn to all the brass in this movie
The giant mechanical spider was something of an obsession of producer Jon Peters. He'd been attached to a Superman reboot that never happened that Kevin Smith was hired to write. Apparently did he not want Superman to fly or have a cape, but also insisted he had to fight a giant mechanical spider. He literally wouldn't give that up.
Yes…I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring Jon Peters up.
He did well for himself, considering he started out as Barbara Streisand’s hairdresser (no joke).
In Peters' defense, Superman didn't fly in the early comics.
@@ricardocantoral7672 indefensible...nobody wants to see Superman NOT fly
I watched the original series in the 70s on TV. The effects were good, although as an engineer I kept having to ask myself "how is that physically possible?". Smith and Kline had decent chemistry, Salma Hayak's butt cheeks looked good and Kenneth Branaugh was over the top in his portrayal of the villain. If you watched the original series, it had some really off the wall ideas of what could have been possible in the late 1800s, based on 1960s technology. This was a good romp in nostalgia, with a big budget to make the visuals work.
I always enjoyed this movie 🎥
I was a HUGE will Smith fan when this movie came out and from the first time seeing the trailer I thought it looked absolutely terrible and was sure I'd never watch it
I fell asleep during this movie. In the theater.
At least you had good seats.
Consider yourself lucky. It was so bad it still comes back to me in my nightmares!
@@jahbad01 Trust me I know how bad it was I only fell asleep right near the end. It was free midnight viewing because my sister worked for the theater but I still left wanting my money back
I was a teenager when this movie came out and I enjoyed the hell out of its first summer on HBO. The chemistry between West and Artemis wasn’t great but there were plenty of good jokes in this movie. Kenneth Branagh’s Loveless was on par with Gary Oldman’s Zorg from the fifth element and you get to see Selma Hayak’s ass. Better lead casting might have made this a totally different movie.
10:02 I think you can count The Phantom and The Shadow here, too. It was a few years late to the party, but I'll add Get Smart as one of the moderate successes.
I always liked this movie a lot 😂
Kevin Kline is fantastic, I wish he was in more.
Dunno if I'm the only one but I liked this film
I thought it was a great movie. It wasn’t as good as men in black, but at least as good as bad boys. It had 2-3 jokes that were not very funny but they still made me chuckle and the rest of the jokes landed very well. It’s not a masterpiece but I would watch it again because well it is good
On the slim chance MSSP wouldn't exist without this movie I'd say it's a must for humanity, no matter the quality. Dog Bless to all.
I actually still enjoy this movie. I think it’s hilarious. I didn’t need it to be too serious. The comedy was enough. That scene where James West meets Loveless and they trade bars at each other is comedic gold
And to say he never regained what he had in the early 90s when he did Ali, I, Robot, more Bad Boys, The Pursuit of Happyness and I Am Legend and Seven Pounds after is crazy
And again the comedy is hilarious
I unironically love this film, flaws and all.
I'll have you know that the proposed theme to The Matix was a banger.
Uhh (doo-doo-doo-doo)

Well I'm one of the weird ones who loved this film 😂 think I went to see it in the cinema and got the spider as a happy meal toy after 😅 and as I'm 33 now it's a quirky pleasure film
Just watched it again on netflix not long ago it was nostalgic and funny. Everything from the plot to cinematography to dialogue is so early 00s
A Guilty pleasure movie but most definitely a cult classic
I’ve always thought it was a good movie and still think it is.
This movie is so funny. I don't know why people hated it so much.
I'll be honest, I think Wild Wild West is a terrible movie, but kind of a guilty pleasure anyway. I've rewatched it at least a few times....it's one of those movies that bad but entertaining enough. I'd probably give it a 6 out of 10.
You were far too generous when you said some jokes worked.
Too generous in implying this film had any jokes.
Painful memories. The first movie I walked out of.
I remember the hype for this movie was huge.
I enjoyed it a lot as a kid
I have this on VHS and I remember not even finishing it.
This movie is stupid as all hell and i love it! Branagh makes one of the most entertaining villains in history
I love this movie😅
When I was younger the movie seemed fun
In its favor: this was one of two movies (the other being "Dogma") that cemented my late-'90s crush on Salma Hayek.
I actually liked this movie.
I love this movie
Honestly, I love this movie. It's fun as hell and does the whole "retro tech" in a way that is somewhat believable. I actually think in today's world, this movie would track extremely well. Kline and Branagh bring a Shakespearean level to their roles and Smith delivers his trademark bravado which is a nice dichotomy to both formerly mentioned characters. It's a good film. Herd mentality on the internet is real.
I thought it was amazing, but I was a kid.
It's fine. Not great but not as terrible as people say.
This movie got me into steam punk so I will forever be grateful for this coming out. It’s a great movie if you turn your brain off and just enjoy the view.
had this on vhs as a kid. good little flick.
Saw it in the theater and on the same day South Park, Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Whereas I don’t think this movie is better at all, I also think it’s pretty damn fun, funny. I truly don’t get all the hate.
