    You have some very docile cows. It is amazing just what everyday interaction with them will do. Thanks for the video.

    Good morning and Happy New Year, 47 acres left to graze your killing me. We have been feeding hay for at least 60/70 days, looking forward to extending the grazing time this new year. Great group of videos lately, looking forward to your return visit to the farm this year if time allows.

      Happy New Year! Feeding hay isn't fun for sure! When we feed hay for 40-60 days feels like eternity. Looking forward to visiting your farm this year. Thanks for watching!!

    Your pastures look great for January 2024. I had a good grazing year, I was happy. I did set a goal to extend my days from last years grazing period. You are so right about no excuses and changing your ways. Mistakes is what makes us better. Curious, how old was oldest cow you have or had on the farm. Great job Emmy. Happy New Year Wilson family from farmer rod family

      Hey Rod, Glad you were able to graze later into the year. Our 3 oldest cows are 12 years. The cow that eats dogs is 12 and the cow I refer to as a big old girl is 12. Mistakes is how we learn. Happy new year to you and your family!

    There are no excuses, thank you. All i see here in my area are cattle in mud.

    It's amazing how much you save with grazing. It should be educational for wise people, stubborn people not so much!

      It cost a lot to feed livestock. Even if your making your own feed. Thank for watching!

      The best early winter grazing! I can say that Wisconsin has yet to see a real winter day. The extended Forcast shows that cold air is on its way.

    Always the goal here also to extend the grazing season. We got to the end of november this year but heavy snow and frozen ground can make it a challenge.

      I'm done. We had a mild fall so we got everything grazed. My next step will be to have some stockpile for spring.

    Where do you buy your white clover seed?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  6 місяців тому

      I buy a lot of seed from Welter seed and honey company. They have good seed only drawback is the shipping. If buying a lot of seed the shipping is off set. Hope that helped! Thanks for Watching!

    What are you favorite grasses for winter grazing?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  6 місяців тому

      That is a great question! I used to think fescue was the best. I think orchard grass is even better. Fescue is still up in my top two favs.

    What breed of cattle do you run?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  8 місяців тому +1

      50% are registerable black angus. I say that cause we have not registered an animal in over 4 years. Folks recognize our cattle as animals that can go out and make living without all the inputs and don't want the papers. The other half of the herd a commercial angus with wagyu, herford, or brahman mixed in with less than 12.5% on the off spring. Thanks for watching!!

    Do you spread your cowpiles or leave them as is after cows have been moved

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  7 місяців тому

      We do not spread the cow pies. Soon as the soils start waking up in the spring they will be gone quickly. One of our goals not to start a tractor.

    Are you grazing sheep and/or goats? Do you use any chemicals/vaccinations?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  8 місяців тому

      We graze sheep. I haven't been able to find a goat that is hardy enough to live here. We use no chemicals, vaccinations, and do not trim feet. In the event we had to treat for something that animal will be eliminated from the flock. Great question!

      @@RussWilson what mix of breeds influence your sheep genetics? Have you checked out Integrity Ranch goats? I would like to get a breeding trio of hair sheep and meat goats. Only have an acre. My background is CAFO dairy-lifetime til a year ago and CAFO pigs-18 months about 6 years ago. Have been reading/watching Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown, Greg Judy, Ray Archuleta, Allen Williams, Jim Gerrish, Allen Savory, Steve Kenyon, Richard Perkins (who had a really fascinating interview of a guy who line bred his best after heavily culling the bottom),... You and my one brother create things in the farm shop. He built a wheelchair stair glide from scratch and modified nearly every piece of equipment that the farm purchased.

      @@user-kv2pt4lu9y@user-kv2pt4lu9y Katahdin and Dorper are the main influences in the flock. Other than that, I can't tell you what else is mixed into the flock. When folks normally ask, I respond with They are sheep that live. I'll check out Integrity Ranch for goats. Farmers are known for taking a brand new piece of equipment, tearing it apart, and rebuilding it for their farm. Great comment.

    How many head of cattle and, through how many total acres do they rotate?

      Great question we have around 80-90 head of cattle all times. Our total animals including hogs, sheep donkeys, chicken and cattle are around 70-80 animal units with 145 acres of pasture land.

    I’m leaning more towards grazing. And less feeding up here in se Saskatchewan Canada. Currently got my herd grazing a cover crop blend. Been a mild winter up here so far.
