There was an unbalance of attention because Belinda was the face everyone saw although Charlotte, Jane and Kathy were really the force behind the band.
Charlotte says at 7:05 she couldn't write songs, which would explain why on Talk Show, she only gets a writing credit on 3 songs, wheras with Beauty And The Beat, she was crediting on 8 songs. Kathy, on the other hand, only wrote 1 song on BATB, while TS has her name on the writing credits for 5 songs. So had that done as well as the first one she could have made millions.
Belinda's being a knockout might have also had something to do with it. She had looks, a warm voice and a sense of humor. On top of that, she had a shy/outgoing, energetic and bubbly personality that most people responded to. You couldn't help being drawn to her because she commanded attention. Belinda's solo career soared because she had a combination of things that worked in her favor. She had what it took to make it and hold people's attention.
Yep. Belinda was the "voice" of The Go-Go's. Her voice wouldn't really develop and mature until her solo career, but her voice with the early Go-Go's was unique and had charm and personality. Of course, her girlish cuteness also helped as displayed in some of their videos. God Bless The Go-Go's from 2000 really showcases a grown-up voice from Belinda. I like Jane, but it was kind of greedy of her to try and move in on Belinda's role in the group just so she could grab some of the spotlight.
@@randyventresca4152 well you can apply that same logic regarding Belinda trying to grab some of Jane and Charlotte's songwriting royalties. Jane wanted to sing one damn song, her own to boot. Hell, Mick had Keith sing one once in awhile. There's usually a fair amount of blame to go around, when it comes to groups disbanding. I like Belinda, but it seems she's a bit full of herself.
@jamesrsfo Honestly though, Jane didn't have a voice nearly powerful enough to be a lead singer. Her solo career tanked. I personally believe it was her voice. Yet Belinda's solo career soared. Just my opinion.
With, perhaps a lethal dose of egoism and a dash of prima dona, diva like self importance. With little to no songwriting ability. I'll take Jane, even though Belinda was the 'star'.

Kathy wasn’t in the band when Beauty and the Beat was written. To get her song on the album took Charlotte to insist it happen.
