  • Here with another Studio Ghibli movie reaction. My first time watching Porco Rosso or Kurenai no Buta (紅の豚) (1992) in Japanese.
The film is a Japanese animated adventure comedy written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is based on Hikōtei Jidai ("The Age of the Flying Boat"), a three-part 1989 watercolor manga by Miyazaki.

I watched the Italian dub of this film and I must say that it’s VERY fitting

My uncle, who's a war veteran watched this movie with me. He theorized Porco probably has 'survivor's guilt!'

      Your uncle is right.
Marco feels guilty not only because survived the war, but also because Gina's husband (who was also his best friend) died and he's torn between the love for Gina and his guilt and sense of loyalty.
So he basically he cast the curse on himself, he unconsciously wanted the world to see him as a pig because that's how he felt.
That's the reason why Fio sees him with his human face, because he thought she was sleeping: in the moment he realizes she's awake he turns back into a pig.

Yeah, that sounds about right. But it doesn’t make sense why they choose to make him a pig. I would have preferred if they kept him human or turned him into a hawk or crow, something that related to flying.

@@tjjordan4207 well traditionally the pig is seen as an ignoble and "dirty" animal because it rolls in the mud, obviously here it is meant in a more theoretical sense ...

well, Hayao Miyazaki says that he doesn't have a certain reason why porco is a pig. once he was asked this question by a reporter he was so confused. sorry for the bad English I am Japanese

Nice reaction, I love this film, I don't know if you noticed it but during the final scene, while Fio talks about the future, moored next to Gina's private garden at the Adriano Hotel there is a fire red seaplane that looks just like that of Porco, so in the end Gina might have won the bet ... 😉

Porco Rosso is my favorite Ghibli movie. It makes me tear up every time with the explanation of how he became a pig. Lots of old Miyazaki movies like Grave of the Fireflies have some deep anti-war sentiment. I feel like this one is never mentioned when it comes to Ghibli movies and it always makes me happy to see people appreciating it.

Freedom in the sky has always been the theme in every Miyazaki's works.

Thank you for reaction to one of my favorite movie! If you want more of Miyazaki's airplane obsession I recommend to watch 'The Wind Rises'

Thank you for making a video of my reaction to this film. "Porco Rosso" and "PRINCESS MONONOKE" are my favorite Hayao Miyazaki movies.
I think most of Hayao Miyazaki's movies have responded, but I recommend one more thing. 「ルパン三世 カリオストロの城(LUPIN THE THIRD: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO)」.
This is the first monumental film directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It's a TV series adaptation of a Slapstick comedy by Lupin III's Theft Group and Interpol Inspector General Zenigata. However, if you don't have to watch the series, it's a masterpiece full of young Miyazaki ideas. Please enjoy it once.

This is probably my favorite of all the Studio Ghibli movies, with Castle In The Sky a close 2nd. I love how laid back it is as opposed to being a big epic story.
My only real issue is why the main character had to be a pig. What was being a pig supposed to symbolize? Cowardice? Gluttony? He doesn’t appear to be any of those to the full extreme. If anything, he seems to suffer from survivor’s guilt and is a womanizer but being a pig doesn’t fit that though.
It doesn’t bother me too much but I would have preferred if the main character was just human and that was it. If they were going to turn him into an animal then why not a hawk, a crow, or anything that would involve flying.

    • @giuliabeonio4325

well traditionally the pig is seen as an ignoble and "dirty" animal because it rolls in the mud, obviously here it is meant in a more theoretical sense ... here more than anything else I suppose it means his feeling guilty for having survived, in fact dirty, as if the weight of the death of his companions and of his survival all fell on him and were an indelible shame ....

I'm pretty sure it's his own self-loathing, rather than any kind of karmic justice that transformed him into what he saw himself as: a dirty pig. He can't bear to be the only survivor; that's why we get some hints that he might have turned back into a man at the end when he realises how loved he is.
