As far as "these" Imaginative realism and the light and color books of James Gurney are in my cart. Off to be the wizard (because I have not read that yet of the ones mentioned) As far as the "art of" section those were awesome but those aren't my favorites. Adam Duff on lucid pixel does a lot of videos that look into the art of books. For anyone reading this comment please look up lucid pixel on UA-cam for more recommendations on the "art of" topic.
Your books are amazing. I have them on my bookshelf (currently on my desk for few weeks) as well. I am forever grateful for your effort and sharing your knowledge with people like me. Thank you.
I have at least two of your books, possibly three. I used them to help learn about how light and colour works. 10/10 would recommend. Up until that point I really just didn't get it. That helped a lot :)
Dear Mr Gurney, I finally got your book "imaginative realism" and it is very encouraging even for someone who ist still expanding his drawing skills and hasn't that much experience with painting. Thank you very much for your work and I'm looking forward to read "Color and light" when I'm ready for it.
33:15 start of a discussion that was really valuable to me. Taking notes, not multitasking, sitting down to do one thing for a set period of time. This is something that I've gotten WORSE at growing up, meaning that I've lost a lot of focus since finishing my education. However, yesterday I've managed to sit down and finish a drawing in one sitting. It took 3-4 hours, very late at night (started just before midnight I think). I can't even tell how long exactly it took, because I was in a flow like state and very focused on the drawing. This is a really good indication for me that I had a great session, and I feel a TON lot better vs. being distracted while working. I remember feeling this level of focus many times before, so now it's just a matter of consciously trying to focus on the process of drawing. Hopefully you don't have to be alone in your room and late at night like me just to focus, but putting yourself in an environment where you CAN put your mind to focus makes the whole difference. Also I want to point out that music is completely fine, but only when it's being received as a white noise/background noise. You don't want it to take your attention.
So glad to see you back Stan. Love the chemistry between you two. Hope you guys enjoy your break. Will be going back through the season to pull out gems until you return.
IT'S COMING! ITS HERE! THE DAY HAS COME AND HE'S DOING IT! MARSHALL'S ACKNOWLEDGING THE BOOKSHELF -- TOUCHING IT EVEN! WE'RE GETTING A BOOKSHELF TOUR! (KIND OF!)
Books are great because you don't get lost down rabbit holes like you do with the web. It's nice to look through 30 pages in a book for a concept reference vs the unlimited content of the web
Having books for reference is very different from having the internet. When I google for references, the problem isn't that I can't find images that work, it's that I find so many other images that distract. That, combined with it being more screen time can sometimes be so numbing that it really slows my intake of visual information. Great recommendations, guys! Can't wait for next season!
I've got SO MANY of your podcasts to catch up to. Hope to see more of you in the future, keep up the amazing work. Would love to know more about your development as artists: what you practised more; what you didn't; how your vision as an artist changed with age and knowledge; and so on.
I love this podcast so much! Thank you and please never stop! I'm 39, have recently fallen back in love with art and I feel like I am absorbing knowledge like a sponge through you😍
As a lifetime competitive swimmer, listening to Stan talk about learning through repetitiveness and slowly adding another piece to the puzzle reminds me of what I’m now learning through trying to draw. You’ve gotta grind the basics individually, a lot, before you "get it" and it becomes natural. What I’ve been having trouble with is always trying to look at the bigger picture too often, and getting overwhelmed with all there is to learn then falling off the grind. These podcasts/videos have been great in keeping me grounded and offering advice on where and how to start. Your discourse and tangents are both entertaining and filled with knowledge. Please keep doing what you’re doing. Stan: I hope you continue to swim, it’s a great low impact sport that will keep you in shape for the rest of your life if you go to the pool a few times a week. Remember: technique is key! Marshall: you’ve definitely become the art "parent" of a lot of young artists through this series, whether you know it or not. Your perspective course has been great, and was definitely what I was looking for when trying to learn how to draw. Nice beard by the way! Looks great!
20:00 about seeing the process and stages of a piece. Really reminded me why I enjoy listening to jazz. It’s about seeing what the process of the artist is in real time. Since jazz(the real one) is about improvising. So when you hear a proper jazz solo, you can, if you’re fast enough, realize the beauty of a moment, you weren’t able to see that beauty before. When you imagine what you might have done on that moment.
Good info you guys, Thanks. I graduated from ACCD in Jan 87, at the age of 36. Freelanced for 10 years, worked in Scenic Industry for 10 years, worked as a full time artist at Disney for 11 years, retired, worked as a Reserve Sheriff Deputy for 15 years, now just do my own art which includes, murals, signs, sketchbook, and animal painting/drawing. I have many art books which I love so thanks for sharing your collections, truly inspiring.
You can never spend too much time sharing sources of knowledge. Many of us find this talks fascinating so it's greatly appreciated Marshall, thank you.
As someone who loves books, this is one of my fave episodes for sure. Definitely a big YES to more book reviews for season 3! Will definitely add The Talent Code to my to-read list. Anyhoo...happy holidays to the entire team🤗
a fantastic episode guys, im now starting the Great Courses on How Science fiction Works, and have bookmarked the short stories book. I havnt considered taking up literature as an interest, but want to expand my world. So far im enjoying the Sci fi course, it has already opened my eyes.
I am so excited that you have reviewed books. I buy books from Amazon (member since they first started), book stores, museums, thrift stores, etc. So happy to see your enthusiasm.
11:21 Holy Coffee beans from a civet! I had one of those time life books, the one for fishes. I read it as a kid and I felt like I knew everything about fish. I didn't know they made others.
Marshall mentioned empathy at 1:01:01 . Can Marshall and Stan discuss empathy in art and in life ( and how the two affect each other ) in a future episode ? Thanks.
Oh No. What did you do? This certainly won't help my artbook addiction 😂 Great episode though! Thank you for the podcasts! Most of the time they are really insight-full. I always take a lot of notes from them. And the rare times they are not, they are at least very entertaining to watch. Have a nice holiday with your families!
Love every episode of this podcast! I think an artist spotlight would be a cool podcast idea. Pick an artist, probably dead, and talk on what you guys love about them, favorite pieces, what you learned from them. It could also be interesting if it was an artist one of you guys love and one of you not so much.
I already stopped sometimes the podcasts videos in highest quality to inspect Marshall's books names in the background :D But this is also very useful, thank you!
Hey, Gents! Not necessarily related to this video, but I just watched a documentary on Polish artist Szukalski. In the docu, they discussed how he was absolutely against education, especially art education. I think one of his quotes was, “burn the art academy”. I thought of you guys because of the discussion you had a while back about the pros and (mostly) cons of Art School. I would love to learn more about him. He seemed quite...eccentric, to stay the least.
I’m sure anyone can relate. It’s like with educating babies. If you show them how to do X. They won’t have the brain power needed and the creativity needed to solve the problem on their own. So the price of knowledge is the destruction of creativity. And for those of you that are appalled by this statement- remember how many people are quick to stay on using reference and relying on teachers, and relying in general support to motivate themselves. Why? Because they lack it themselves. And if you don’t know that you can solve your own problems, you are just continuing to cultivate generations of clones and who are afraid of themselves, and can’t see the beauty of taking on the world by themselves. That’s why it’s so harmful if you are not careful with the usage of knowledge.
I enjoyed what Marshall said about getting rid of his TV. I was watching less than an hour of TV a month so I got rid of my TV and I think its the best decision I Have ever made. These days the internet is my next distraction and since I use it so frequently to learn from I can't get rid of it yet. I do self check myself like does this pertain to my goals or am I endlessly scrolling nonsense. I think the internet is just one big distraction if you log in without any goal in mind.
Hey Marshall! If you're not in the holiday spirit because it's 81 degrees we can swap locations. It's 31 degrees here in Lowell, MA and we're expecting a foot or more of snow. Just asking! hahaha
Boy-oh-boy... The A.I. Natural Language Predictor makes a prehistoric joke out of Cliff Notes. That was fun, gentlemen! I really enjoy the fact that you are each both Student and Teacher ; quality content for every age and stage of life.

Did anyone recognize the melody to Marshall’s ad libbed opening song? I was thrilled to hear it because I sang it in college and it just warmed my heart that Marshall would know Barber’s Knoxville Summer intro melody. Wow, Marshall you are one cool dude. 🥰
JAC Redford told me (in the 90's) not to miss the Dawn Upshaw version. I bought the CD, didn't care much for it, but out of respect listened to it about 100 times over 25 years... then a few months into the lockdown it washed over me as one of the most emotional music experiences I've ever known. Ready Player Two is even better than the first one. Brilliant story. Could have been a classic if written differently, but still a magnificent concept.
you know what I think Stan and Marshall should talk about, that people that is successful in the creative art industry rarely want to talk about? Being an artist/art student with mental health issues, I have seen so many of my friends suffer from depression and feeling like their works are terrible and that they are not worth it when that is entirely untrue. All the professionals in the field only talk about having a go-getter attitude, but it's sometimes not that simple for some people.
You might want to buy "The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (Season One)" (256 pages, good paper and decent print quality, bigger and more square format, better selection, same format as the other big StarWars Art of Books) instead of "Star Wars: The Mandalorian: The Art & Imagery Collector's Edition Vol. 1" (96 pages, A4 format, poor paper quality) I assume it maybe wasn't out yet when the video was recorded, it was released this December. The one mentioned in the video is from August. It's not bad, I mean, it is still great art. But I would go for the higher quality one.
I want to hear more singing from Marshall! Can he do a holiday set? Also has anyone ever told Marshall he looks like Benedict Cumberbatch and sounds like Mike Rowe? Am I wrong?
Hey guys loved your podcast and I've listened to em like 2 or 3 times already as I was doing milage exercises that I learned from peterhans cgma course trailer(can't afford actual one yet) but I have a question what do you do when you want to draw something to learn but you have no idea how to start that drawing or you have a hard time coming up with ideas, like you've got the drive to do it but it feels like your creativity falls short? Hope you'll read this in your upcoming podcast it's been 3 weeks already missing the contents.

Done, my Senseis
Thanks for mentioning my books. You had a great list of books and I was honored that you included mine in there.
Your books are amazing. I have them on my bookshelf (currently on my desk for few weeks) as well. I am forever grateful for your effort and sharing your knowledge with people like me. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your work and I'm looking forward to read "Color and light" when I'm ready for it.
Marshall released his greatest hit so far this intro
MARSHALL IS THE DEFINITION OF WISE OLD MAN AND ALSO HE LOOKS LIKE A LEGIT WISE OLD MAN.
Indeed, Marshall is like Gandalf. Stan comes to be like Bilbo Baggins.
MAYBE ITS BECAUSE HES A OLD MAN
Just wait until that beard gets bigger and then Merlin and Gandalf would have the buddy they needed to make their Trinity of Bearded Wiseguys.
and I have a feeling he is always trolling while maintaining his smiley troll face :P

I filled out the survey, but wanted to comment about how much I love the book reports! They are easily my favorite episodes of this podcast.

And a big thanks for all the books mentioned.
You can never spend too much time sharing sources of knowledge. Many of us find this talks fascinating so it's greatly appreciated Marshall, thank you.
Welcome back Stan & congratulations for your fatherhood, Sir Marshall your starting jingle sounds great ☺ want more of those. 😅
I would not complain if we got a mini episode of all the Marshall jingles 😄
THE BOOKSHELF TOUR?? STAN BACK?? omg
I forgot to say I like Marshalls songs in the survey. It lifts my spirits to see him so chirpy :) Congrats on the new baby Stan!
As someone who loves books, this is one of my fave episodes for sure. Definitely a big YES to more book reviews for season 3! Will definitely add The Talent Code to my to-read list. Anyhoo...happy holidays to the entire team🤗

Thank you Marshall and Stan! Good of you to share your bookshelves with us. It got you two going too, you really got into it. It was good to see.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, you guys!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I've been looking for a reliable list of recommended books, thank you!
Awesome collection of books. Really enjoyed War of Art. Look forward to checking out your new suggestions!!! Cheers Lads
Guys you have no idea how I love you and how I am grateful to you)))
Well wishes to you both!! Thank you always, these podcasts just destroy any inability to inspire myself and get artwork done during tough work days
Hey, Stan. What web camera are you using now? It looks so much better than the standard webcam.
Hehe, its the same lumix gh5 as before but I put on a way better lens :)
This was such a good episode. Marshall is just so wise.
aw!! glad to see you two back together!
Finally!!!!!! I was waiting for going through Marshall's bookshelf since the first episode...always tried to find them on Amazon...
Love every episode of this podcast! I think an artist spotlight would be a cool podcast idea. this was the most helpful episode in quite some time. Thanks guys!
so happy to see that Stan is back
I truly missed Stan. Welcome back!!!
Those "World of. . " books!!!!!!!!! I lived on those as a child in the 60s-70s!!!!! Huge fan.
Keep doing book reports, I love these podcasts
My favorite book series would probably be the novilasation of red dwarf. they also have some lovely audio books too
Wow it's amazing how Marshall keep his books look new.
I enjoyed what Marshall said about getting rid of his TV. I was watching less than an hour of TV a month so I got rid of my TV and I think its the best decision I Have ever made. This might be my favorite episode you guys have ever done
Great share of some great books. Thanks guys 💕
Hey Marshall! If you're not in the holiday spirit because it's 81 degrees we can swap locations. It's 31 degrees here in Lowell, MA and we're expecting a foot or more of snow. Just asking! hahaha
Yesss all the books!!!!
Boy-oh-boy... The A.I. Natural Language Predictor makes a prehistoric joke out of Cliff Notes. That was fun, gentlemen!
I really enjoy the fact that you are each both Student and Teacher ; quality content for every age and stage of life.
Hello Proko and Marshall
So I recently watched prokos vid on aphantasia, and I think I might have a problem, completely the opposite of that. Whenever I sit down to draw something from imagination, I have a clear idea in mind but as soon as I confront that blank page, it’s as if a million images start forming in my head, eventually making the original intended idea unclear. I ha e a friend who’s also having a similar problem. Can you address this in your next episode??
Did anyone recognize the melody to Marshall’s ad libbed opening song? I was thrilled to hear it because I sang it in college and it just warmed my heart that Marshall would know Barber’s Knoxville Summer intro melody. Wow, Marshall you are one cool dude. 🥰
JAC Redford told me (in the 90's) not to miss the Dawn Upshaw version. I bought the CD, didn't care much for it, but out of respect listened to it about 100 times over 25 years... then a few months into the lockdown it washed over me as one of the most emotional music experiences I've ever known. Now I understand why JAC was so insistent.
Could you talk more about the "current" fantasy art/artists, eg. Patrick J Jones, because i think they are often overlooked or many people don't even know about them.
Thank you and I love your podcasts!
(especially marshalls songs hahaha)
Art of books of games concept designs are densely rich.
Btw, everyone goes for Kim Jun Gi, and respectfully so.
But I like PeterHanStyle's work a lot.
Marshall is the MAN!
Congrats on the new kid Stan! I'm a daddy twice over and it only gets better and better. Best wishes to you and yours.
just LOVE this topic
Ohhh Marshall you're the besttttt ❤️
Hey stan does he read any of our comments? Everyone here loves his singing.
you taking for granted that stan is gonna read your comment? lol
Stannnnnnn we missed you! And hi Marshall! :)
I feel you could do a 3hr podcast on this and people will listen, I do listen to you on playlist for hours. A bit like the Joe Rogan Podcast, everything you guys talk about is interesting, can always be expanded on and you seem to be at the tipping point where you can take on the task.
Does Marshall have a list of his favorite Great Courses anywhere? If not I’d love to see one.
It could be neat to have the GPT3 bot weigh in on the topics at the end of future shows and see if the internet reinforces what you said, if your advice goes against conventional internet wisedom, or maybe if there is some aspect of the topic you missed.
Thanks for another great season, and happy holidays!
Yesss we did it, so now please make the Video with Alan Lee.
Look guys I will write till you do it I swear
i LOVE the DK books with all of my core, is just the right type of book for me, small facts and ton of images ;;
I just got the mandalorian book last week. It is awesome however it only has art for the first season
One of our University professors always used to say that having talent only means that you have to work much harder than everybody else 🤔
Santaaaaa???? And congrats to Papa Proko!!!
very good anatomy book is - "anatomy for sculptors understanding the human figure"
I've got one on the predators all but the first one,,I need it!! &my father got me a giant book of movie stills and cinema stills of the alien franchise,,,freaking treasure
The AI Stan presents near the end of the Podcast could be such a powerful tool for research.
I was wondering if you guys at some point will do a book review about the Artist's Way. I know it's been mentioned before, just curious!
The Draftsmen Podcast is like the Rick and Morty of Drawing.
Ready Player Two is even better than the first one. Brilliant story. Could have been a classic if written differently, but still a magnificent concept.
you know what I think Stan and Marshall should talk about, that people that is successful in the creative art industry rarely want to talk about? We need a Cesar Santos Episode
Fascinating that the concept of “out of print” books is still a thing in 2020s.
I would love to see high-res pictures of Marshall's bookshelves where all of the titles are legible.
Do more book reviews. It would also be nice if they brought “what’s yo thang” every now and then
Does marshall finally go through his bookcase in this one?
Awesome intro 😂
Would you include copyright for visual arts? How does an artist protect his art posted online?
Marshall is beginning to look like the Gandalf of Art Instruction!
Yay stan is back!!
1" (96 pages, A4 format, poor paper quality)
I assume it maybe wasn't out yet when the video was recorded, it was released this December.

Merry Christmas everyone!!! Enjoy a safe one and healthy one! Draw draw drawwwwww drawwwwwwww!
