BMW HP4 v Yamaha RD500 - 30 Years of Progression
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- In 1984, Yamaha's RD500 was the daddy. 30 years later, it's the BMW HP4 stealing the headlines with its wizz-bang technology and 200bhp. And it's got launch-control. Yep, actual launch-control, and we love it. Traffic light GPs will never be the same again. We managed to get the two bikes together recently for a little tear-up... (FYI, the RD's clutch was on its last legs, and it didn't belong to us! So for the haters and keyboard warriors out there - we took it easy, this was just for fun)

Now switch riders and put the rookie on the BMW. 😉😉
I had a 1984 RD500 LC just like the one in the video and i can tell you from personal experience that they take off from a standing start a lot quicker than that
Yep, even with that very high ratio first gear!
I agree this guy clearly didn’t know how to handle that machine
Same here !
BS Video here.
@@TomKappeln That's what you get from staring at other guy's asses instead of concentrating on the goddamn' job at hand.
I would not trade my 500 for one of these
The music was a lot better in 1984...
No not really
Girls too😂
The BMW will obviously be the quicker, TC etc. etc; however that footage / start is not really a fair representation of the RD !
The legend can never be replaced
An unfair comparison as the RD500LC was given a very tall 1st gear to prevent it flipping off the line. A GPZ900R would have been a better choice.
We well I have an identical RD 500LC and I would have been embarrassed doing a start like that and did not truly represent a comparison, the way he took off on the RD looked like it was his first ride on a 2Stroke
Geezer on the rd500 was asleep
Keep your bmw, give me the lc everytime.
I dont think this is a very accurate comparison. If you want to compare an HP4 to a 1984 bike, perhaps the original ZX9R would be a pretty straight comparison, or a VFR1000R. The RD500 was a bit of an odd fish in its day. On the right road it was pretty much unbeatable, but it did not quite have the straight line go and power to match the big 4 strokes directly on the straights. An RD350 was very much a softer TZ350, but an RD500 was not a softer YZR500, no matter what Yamahas publicity said. Even a 1000 racing Katana with the wire wheels would be a straighter comparison. Or better still, go forward a few months and get a first gen GSXR1100. Put wider rims on one of those and modern tyres, and it would still give most things a very nasty shock. The original first gen GSXR11 was a beast. They lost the plot a bit with later versions, but the original was a weapon.
30 years of progression. The BMW is faster. It's easier to ride. It'll handle and stop better. It's more reliable. It's just better.
So why do I want a 2 stroke 500 far more?
1 word: Soul.
Try a decent 500 2 stroke such as the NSR.
The smell of burnt Castrol R
r4f4st4n1 You can not get a production 500 nsr, because there's no such thing.
There's something to appreciated with thrashing a lesser bike, look at Troy corser ride a ancient bike from the 1930's vs 1970's....fast is fast regardless.... ua-cam.com/video/gMdRyU7c9tU/v-deo.html
Can't beat the smell of 2 stroke though
sorry to say the rider on the rd500Lc got a bad start. perhaps the rd wouldn't win! but I would have thought that someone who has the experience of riding the rd would have made more of a race out of it.
Looked intentional to me.
RD 500: the legend !!!
The 1984 Kawasaki ZX900 Ninja would be a fairer choice , I rode a RD500 , with intention to buy , stock , it was a bit of a wet blanket , so I stuck with my Z1000j , which was bored to 1198cc , stuck on 34 smooth bores and an APW fork brace , changed the swing arm , Marzocci shocks , hanging rear caliper and a few other tricks , then later on in 1984 , I assembled one of the first batch of 900 Ninjas , a bike that did live up to its promise . A ported RD500 with different DG reedvalves , skimmed head and expansions was closer to the RD 500 promise . Rode one a friend bought and did up , it was still no match for my heavier , brick like Z1200j , even in the corners , I had set mine up off the setting of a South African FI superbike racer , abieght minus the slicks . In the 1980s we built some wild machines .
yep the rd500 went that fast a bike. my 350 power valve wernt that far behind my mates rd500..it was all hyped up. the rg500 was way faster.
Bourgeois cowardice! A new engine with more than twice the horsepower, frame and super-lightweight materials and twice the cubic capacity in a modern bike still celebrate on a totally original RD500. Get an updated RD500, with wheels and engine with its 150hp, then the thing will stink for this BMW steroids.
Gooodd
The original rd 500 had only 99hp not a lot but when the torque valve opens I believe it can achieve 140 hp
Off course new bikes have developed ,quicker revving, better take off, better handling but hey, cant beat that two stroke whine and smell of two stroke oil and considering thirty, nearly forty years later they were still darn quick , hence why a legend in its day and still made such an impression, just as any bike today will.
500cc 4 stroke 2023 vs 500cc Suzuki RG500 gamma 1985...
The RG500 pee'd all over the RD. There are a lot of myths over the RD500, they were very good. But there was a lot better about in it's day.
The RD500LC is my bike but this was filmed before I bought it officer
I would prefer to compare BMW HP4 against the racing version of RD500/NSR500/RGV500 of the early 90's on the circuit. Road legal RD500 was so much restricted against the noise regulations and so...
BMW is new and faster ok. But RD is much much faster than we can see on the video. And ok the start is difficult. But why shift up the RD rider at 6000 rpm? :D
That RD had bags of character, give me one of those over any of today's bikes all day long. Plenty quick enough for me.
So we see a lot of RD 350 riders jamming CBR1000 riders but this handicapped pilot couldn't beat that fish can with an RD 500?
Pls change pilots and try again. NO BIKE can beat up a RD 500 while talking starters. In fact, there is only one, the TZ 750.
+Hektor Strassburger So you're saying no bike can beat the RD500 from a standing start? You must be really stupid to even think the RD500 would live with any new modern sports bikes lol. Not a chance in hell! Yes the 500 was quick in it's day but no RD50O rider would keep with the big boys today.
Well I still want the 500 so....
Drag racing a motorcycle that's geared to go over 80 mph in first gear. That's pretty sad. 😐
I owned the rd for a couple of years, great great, memories,
BMW JUMP START.. :D
just listen to the rd, they are something special. I wonder how the s1000rr will fair in 30 years?
Was the guy on the Rd asleep or was it his first ride on a 2 stroke
I just love that Yamaha! 30 years to go about and it did an amazingly great job!
RG500 was better than the RD
Still got this RD500 somewhere in the back of my garage
I have an rx 100 and you need to be so careful while starting it so you don't do an accidental power wheelie
In it's day, it was THE performance Bike, I once saw an RD go against an FZR1000EXUP and he won.
And the BMW driver still starts at the front!
LOL yup the BMW had almost a 2 second head start by the looks of it.
I'd rather have the RD, thanks!
30 years of "progression" yet almost all comments say they would still prefer the RD.... Tells you a little bit about "progression" doesn't it.
As for the comments about the rd is only the daddy until the RG shows up The RG may be faster but the RD is better looking. and the RG is only the daddy if the V due doesn't show up better looking lighter and faster the both . Still love the RD though LOL
Try to compare any 1984 BMW Model with the RD 500. 😂
The 2 stroke JUST MAKES A BETTER SOUND ??
I still own this bike. Sounds amazing
A modern 600cc four would have been a fair match. Not 1000cc plus a jump start.
If i had a choice, i take the RD 500 .
I would still take that 500 any day
I am all about yamaha, but i love the HP4
And yet, the 500 2-stroke has a certain magic few other bikes can have.
BMW riders how to guide in 3 steps
1. pull in clutch
2. push start button
3. full throttle bounce on rev limiter for 2 minutes
It was bouncing off the lower rev limit for launch control, which it was designed for.
I have raced both bikes and I can assure you that the RD500 destroys the BMW in the first 110 to 130 meters of the race. The RD500 has much more initial acceleration.
not even with the best rider on the planet would that RD500 come close
Maybe compare an RC30 to the BMW?
It is just me, or did the Yamaha rider totally balls-up the start? What was with the dragging leg and arm in the air?
BMW is probably quicker. But then again so is a airliner, and most people sleep on those......
quicker lol
it would destroy a gp bike from that eara dude..the bmw s1000rr is a monster of a bike..no 500 2 stroke would stand a chance
steve james No, I think an actual GP race bike would still be quicker. But no road bike from that era is going to get close.
I still think the the Yamaha rider fluffed the start - not that it would make any difference to the end result of they hadn't.
steve james
I think quite a few 500 GP's will kill any modern superbike
SW Burger the last 500cc GP bikes made very close to 200hp and they were also very close to 300lbs. A little under 300 I believe. There isn't a production bike that comes close to those HP/weight numbers. The 500s did get dusted, but they got smoked by 240 hp 990cc 4 strokes that weighed around 325lbs if I'm not mistaken.
Well, i sure wouldn't trade an RD 500 for any of these new tamagoshis out there!
RD is epic, so RD wins!
So much love for an antiquated trash bike ffs. Relax, weirdos. This was a lighthearted video showing how far bikes have come in 30 years. And why would any of you be shocked for a mag titled Fast Bikes to prioritize speed? Maybe you should subscribe to Nostalgia Bikes instead
RD e uma moto de época, nao pode ser comparada , se o motor e moto tivessem evoluido .., colocaria BM no bolso.
Great video!!!
It would have been nice to See a real race with real riders who know how to launch both bikes, both riders sucked at the launch,
YES...But the RD 500 might be more fun to ride than the BMW
Wow - awesome video...
And the RD WINS!!!
Someone should show that fella on the rd500 how to use a clutch and engine.
The clutch was on it's last legs as it says in the description
bmw hp4- 200 hp, yamaha rd 500- 88 hp, the comparison...
That guy on the LC bogged down totally , you should have done a rerun , without him bogging down or was BMW paying you and the RD rider ?
What song on the opening rg500
yeah, don't care the RD gets my money anyway. I used to press my snotty nose against the shop window of my local bike store and stare at this when it came out - Stan Stephens (could hardly call it a store - I think he had two bikes in the shop).
If you offered me the choice of two BMW’s or that RD, I’d take the latter thanks.
Andy Exall dipshit
RD500 or a soulless BMW 🤔 No choice for me it's the RD all day long!
I had a RD 500. It was a great bike but first gear was way tall and it was always hard to launch ,but once it was on song WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
The rd500 was an experience, but it wasn't particularly quick. Back then I bought an fz750, I met an rd500 on the road, had a couple of acceleration tests against it and the fz750 romped away from it. All these years later I would love to have an rd500 !! The rg500 was the quickest 2 stroke and a great experience - the 80s were a fantastic time for motorcycle development, the tyres were a bit crap though 😂
Hey Nick, hardcase :same as me I had an RZ500 and traded it for FZ750, which as you say was quicker however bear in mind that the FZ750 Has a 50% bigger engine, the RZ still very quick for a 500 and yes the RG was quicker than the RZ by quite a margin-I had a mate who is a great engineer and read a tuning book on two strokes. I think by the guy that owned TTS in the UK? And he handmade some amazing expansion chambers and also altered the cutouts and timing in the rotary valves and put a block between the carbs in the manifold so each pair of cylinders could breathe through two carbs -as the timing is different and that RG was something else! I remember riding it with a pillion, and he said, roll the throttle on and don’t let it come on power savagely but rather let it get in the power band and then roll the throttle and don’t peg it in any gear below third or below 100 miles an hour! I laughed, but it was incredible. It would pop the front wheel at 180 k’s in third or fourth gear with a pillion on the back just by it coming on the Power😮🎉😂❤
Your right about the RG500, was a far superior bike, I had a 500lc, and when the RG500 came out I really wanted one but was up to the eyes in a loan debt on my lc so I never got one but side by side the RG was a different bike, superior in all ways
It should invert the pilots and repeat the text.
Unbelievable how the RD 500 pilot got off to a bad start, late, he looks like an amateur, he must be...
In all honesty a Rd 350 would perform better from a standing start.
1000ccm vs 500ccm. yeah.. surprising result...
Just need to do some work on that RD500 and let it breathe and you will have awoken a new animal!
How about the HP4 vs the Yamaha MotoGP factory bike?
What was the point of that?
999 cc vs 499cc
Who won?
Sweet vid guys
God that sounded good...minus the first 30 seconds or so
the RD driver drives like my grandma....shame!
It's amazing how they can NEVER find a rider than can put their feet on the feet pegs. It's like, what are those even there for anyways?
BMW disqualified, jumped the start. RD wins!
So much for modern tech, pfffffffffffffffft
Pretty close I’d say
The BMW has 110 hp over the RD , both nice bikes though
buy the rd500 in 1986 for 3700 euro.....can sell it in 2013 for 6500 euro..;-)
LOL - if you have an RD500 for sale for eur6500 I will buy it off you right now. Fettled and well set up RD5 is still a quick (not fast) bike - no point in comparing - in two years the RD will have increased in value - and the BMW will have lost ............ ££££££'s ????? :)
Jeremy Bretel lol i seen a honda nsr 500 that was £12000 was a minter repsol colours too ahhh shit haha
Jaak ... evn if u gonna put vr rossi on dat rd he not gonna make it with the bmw wic has launch control packd wid it ..
more please!
RD500 > any bmw sportsbike
S1000 has power. RD 500 is legend.
RD rider was waiting for a bus
2 stroke smells better are funner and sound alot fucking nice the way a 2 stroke engine works is believable / best thing ever made
HP4 with launch control..
oh no i now want an RD500
Back in the RZ 500 era the only social justice clowns was the E.P.A. ." "Environmental Protection Agency''
And twice the CC.....
Jersey?
BMW is the sport bike of today thumbs up to Bavaria.
Ermmm...can the guy on thr RD even ride? What was with the leg hand for 200 yards? (shakes head) - re-run the race again, but with the same rides swapped and watch the beemer do exactly the same..utter tosh vid
Like the LC's going to be anywhere near it?!!!!
+Robcatist Just read some of the comments, there are people on here thinking it would stand a chance if the RD rider was better lol That thing was a slab and takes about 12 seconds to even get to a 1/4 mile lol. Yes it was fast in it's day but no RD 500 rider would cream a modern bike like this.
+spike lee 30 year old technology against a modern day state of art BMW 1000 there's only going to be one winner....the BM by miles.
Robcatist I know..but people on here think the RD would live with the BMW lol..not a chance in hell.
Race again ..for real.
