Do you guys remember having to fill out a card to take books home from the school library? They had a card inside the back with a list of names that had previously signed the book out. I always thought it was cool to see who else had gotten the same book as I did.

Born in 75 and absolutely loved being a kid in the 80s. So different from today. Also, being born in that time we first hand watched so many things becoming obsolete. We know what things were like before certain technological/social advances (R-1 residential zoning, schooling, childhood freedom, (absence of) social media, etc.) and what they have become after, thus making us a perfect generation to declare which era is better. An added bonus was we got to see the 70s lingering into the decade. I also think we are better representatives of what good music is.

It is an interesting time to be a part of because you can see two different generations above and below almost sort of duking it out verbally sometimes. The 70s and the 80s all seem to have their own style and culture. The 90s does too but after that it really seems to blend and not too much is unique to their own time other than technology. Ripped jeans and Air Jordans are all 80s! Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of the time!

Yeah, I'll also agree with the idea that Gen-Xers/80s kids had it really good because we were the first generation to enjoy computers for work, school and entertainment, so we remember what life was like both before the computer age and the Internet and we know what it was like afterwards. We kinda had the best of both worlds ... a childhood free from Internet addiction where we spent most of our time outside playing in the real world but we also got to play video games and learn how to use computers and as we became adults we helped to build the Internet and our modern world. Becoming an adult in 1990 was just the perfect end to a childhood and a decade.

And the smell would last for a whole month too. The materials were better too. Things made from the 1960s into mid 1980s were made of better wood, metal and plastic so they outlast. I still have a jean jacket and pants set that was made in 1980s and they still look so new today. 😮 I sure miss the furniture too. We use to have entertainment system furniture which my brother would kick and punch when he got upset over a video game and that thing lasted for 21 years until my mom had to get rid of it due to remodeling the living room to use half of it for a personal bedroom. The beds were also reinforced with the best thick wood too and twin beds back then could hold up heavy weights. They don't make stuff that lasts long anymore or strong enough. That is the one thing I miss about the 1980s. Now things are so cheaply made that we are wasting and using up more resources than ever before. 🥺😔

As a child born in 1976, this video “jogged my memory” more than any other nostalgic thing from the 80’s (i.e., toys, movies, cartoons, New Wave Videos on MTV).
R.I.P. to my 5th grade teacher Mr. Addington. He was an amazing teacher who not only made learning fun, but he was very passionate about his music. He had a piano in the classroom, which meant we had music five times a week at the beginning of the day. I will always remember this “One of a kind” man and he made my 1987-1988 school year very special.
By the way, this video was well put together and enjoyable.

There were times when I had to deal with some bullies. Thankfully I found an outlet to get involved with to help me through. Anyways I still have my Trapper Keeper! It has colorful butterflies on a black background. I remember the excitement of going to school on the first day waiting to get your schedule to find out your teachers and classes in Jr.High and High school. In elementary school first day of school was fun to see which friends got the same class with you.

i graduated in 89 and how i'd love to go back. there was nothing i loved more than 'back to school shopping'. it was definitely more fun in the middle school years. I LOVED 'stationary' stores and school supply sections of drug stores. we had all the essentials: trapper keeper, loose leaf paper, blue denim binder, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, ruler etc. and back to school clothes shopping meant sneakers, jeans, cords, flannel shirts and short sleeves. in high school my styles changed every year from a dork to a guido to prep with my Bd Baggies long sleeves, Rugger polos, J.Crew rugbys, ripped jeans and Reeboks. you'd have all your new stuff out on the bed so excited... BUT.....that first day bus ride was thee worst. summer was officially over. high school was different because you got cooler as you got older and by senior year you were the shit...if you drove your own car you were definitely the man. in middle school you were popular if you brought gum to school and shared but having your own wheels as a senior meant freedom. we had mtv, phones in our room, great music and tv, no computers ( aside from the rich kids with an Apple 2E), video games, a penchant for terrible beer and wine coolers, magazines and the library was our source for gathering information. wouldn't change a thing

One thing I think of was needing to cover the books we got issued at the start of the year. Fancy folks would have like plastic, while the rest of us would use the template printed on the paper bags at Safeway to make covers.

So strange to hear about a May to August summer break! All throughout my days we always got out in early June and started again the day after Labor Day! It always made for an uneasy stomach when you'd hear that Jerry Lewis Telethon music knowing it was officially the last day of vacation! Haha! My parents were once talking about a rumor of "all year around school" and that scared the heck out of me at the time but it never came true for us!

In the past this state started after Labor Day time frame but that was when many schools didn't have air conditioning. I was spoiled and I always had it. It is interesting to see when different schools start though. Even here in Oklahoma where I live. My parents said the same thing about school turning into an all year thing. I think that is just wishful thinking on the parents part. Those same rumors seem to be floating around still. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!

The looming threat of "year round school" was hanging over us in the 70's too. I'm sure that rumor goes back much farther. Seems like every kid, everywhere heard stories of the "unnamed, crazy, power-mad politician" who was out to destroy summer forever. AFAIK kids still have this rumor.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and we had June through September summer breaks. That was normal. Now I'm 45 and live in Phoenix and have kids with year round school they get out end of May and start end of July. I think it sucks for them.

I was Born in 78 and remember EVERYTHING about my 80's childhood. Best time to be a kid hands down. The 80's was a combination of tradition, advancement, and growing pains (the show too). We learned from doing not from social media. We played with toys that encouraged our imagination and gave us inspiration to be creative. Music was wide open and people still played the instruments to make that music. Computers were limited which made us appreciate every little upgrade and gave us patience and wisdom in figuring things out. I love my childhood and I unfortunately feel sorry for all generations after X. They will never know the absolute joy of anticipation of Return of the Jedi, Willow, The Karate Kid, Star Trek TNG and so much more. God bless the 80's kids.

I was in elementary school in the 80s. I remember so many of these. I miss those days a lot in spite of the bad memories. However, it was great overall. I felt like I just went back in time. The 80s were truly the best! I wonder if life can ever be that great again? Life was more simple without the net and social media. I loved the cute erasers. My brothers and I used those as toys rather than erasers.
Thanks soooo much for this sweet video.

In truth, this is a very accurate retelling of the times. One of the fondest memories I have is my mom taking me to get school supplies. I was pretty much able to pick out whatever I wanted with no problem. But as to the school clothes shopping, it wasn’t as much fun and I had to get mom-approved selections.

For me it was the 70's, but the main things didn't change much. We had different things on our lunch boxes (Star Wars, Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo and Happy Days mostly, if memory serves). Maybe slightly different fashion brands. But overall, the same thoughts feelings and experiences. Can still smell that banana that was left in a lunch box over the weekend 😂 Thanks again for the memories, Rhetty.

I was a little of the 70s and a little of the 80s so I definitely remember some of the older lunch pails. A lot of those shows in syndication like Andy Griffith were still doing well with lunchboxes.
