So, here's a fun fact: among the fandom during volumes 1 and 2 people were either confused or frustrated about the dark tone of the openings, since they promised darkness and despair but the show was anything but. Turns out, they were all foreshadowing Volume 3. So yeah, a lot of it was indeed planned in advance

Red like Roses part 2 is essentially Ruby and her Mother, Summer, having a conversation and reveals a lot about how Ruby feels about her death, and she's probably just hiding well since Yang didn't think Ruby was old enough to understand. And one of my favorite lyrics for RWBY is in it as well. "Every nightmare just discloses it's your blood that's red like roses" has just always stood out to me.

I always liked how Yang was introduced as Ruby's sister through the music. A remix of Ruby's theme. But her own theme wasn't a big part of the introduction. Instead a remix of everyone else's. A way that you can think about it Yang puts everyone else before herself.

Oh, most of the series has been pretty much planned, with everything for the first 3 volumes being 100% planned before Volume 1 was even completed. By the time they finished volume 2, they had a decent plan for about 10 more volumes.
If you go back to the yellow trailer, there's a quote about asymmetry and beauty. When fans asked Yang's VA how long she'd known Yang was going to lose an arm, she pointed to the trailer and effectively went "From the beginning."

Just want to throw this out there, an awesome resource for RWBY music is a channel called FlyntofRWBY, the channel owner had direct ties with the writer and composer of the songs and has all the lyrics without errors or typos. Not dissing the ones that were used here but Flynt does do it more accurately.

Usually when people react to this soundtrack they just talk about the lyrics and consider the meaning at face value, this is the first time I have seen someone has taken Yangs song and seen the unfortunate side effect of being forced to raise her younger sister. From what I understand of interviews with the RWBY writers, volumes 1 to 3 were basically all intended to be the 'original volume 1' all together so yeah the v3 finale was mostly planned!
That said the maidens as a concept weren't finalized until just after volume 2 so while they definitely planned on stuff like Pyrrha doomed 'hero sacrifice' right from the start there were a lot of things they added to the planning as they went, so there was a good mix of pre planning and developing the story as they went (given certain recurring themes and song lyrics that may or may not be foreshadowing -honestly given how foreshadowy RWBY song lyrics are mostly the trick is just working out what each lyric is foreshadowing THIS time XD- I think they had at least a few key things even in the latest volumes planned from all the way back in the v1 days as well but needless to say there's a whole heap of stuff that probably changed a ton too given how Monty's death would've affected any animation/action plans and of course just the sheer amount of time would've resulted in a ton of tweaks being made to things as well).
Hehe~ The openings are always sneaky about how half the song is blatant foreshadowing but never the parts they actually play in show. Makes the music reactions a hell of a lot more entertaining that's for sure XD
    Ahhh the trailer songs

Most of it was planned in advance (Monty had plans for about 12 volumes) , except for in particular the Maidens, they were created just for Volume 3 and became a major plot element going forward. Also Monty's original idea for the grave in the red trailer was not supposed to be ruby's mother, but Monty changed it after discussing things with composer Jeff.
From Shadows pretty much becomes the White Fang Theme, it is used as a Leit Motif in the episode scores. when the plot focuses on the White Fang . Blake's songs typically are duets and don't just focus on Blake personally.
For The other Girl's their trailer songs are used as Leit Motifs for the girl in the scores.
I may falll was an end credits song in Volume 1 but was also the background Music for Velvet's fight scene in Volume 3 so it can really be considred to fit better in V3 as the lyrics match better. Jeff knew where the series was going.

For me Blake's song has that feel of going down the highway in a police chase (That's just me though) Yang's theme is all about knowing that she is hot and she can burn. Weiss's theme is more about inner reflection, how she sees herself vs how everyone else sees her throughout the series. I May Fall is my favorite since it's about not surrendering when hitting rock bottom.

Red Like Roses Pt. II still has one of my favorite lines out of any rwby song.
"Every nightmare just discloses its your blood that's red like roses"
Red Like Roses is a cute little name for Ruby's theme, but it kinda leaves you asking. "what" is red like roses? Ruby sure, but is that really it? And this song answers that question in a poetic and haunting way, that its her mother's blood that is 'red like roses'.

As you've undoubtedly already seen, FlyntofRWBY.
And while I'm sure someone has already reached out to you about building a playlist for the OST with the "proper" songs, it's really only Volume 1 that suffers from the mix up.
And yeah, pay no mind to anything about the trailer version of I Burn other than it's a fun club mix. I Burn (full version) *is* Yang's theme, and is independent of Weiss or Blake. Or Ruby. Gold, on the other hand, is as you guessed: Yang to Ruby. 😊
I was scared that the messages and themes of the songs would lose impact after coming back to hear them for the first time after Volume 3, but it seems that was unfounded 😅

  • @BGTitanAvatar

Alright, so for the basics before I get into each song. The songs are written by Jeff Williams and performed mostly by his daughter Casey Lee Williams who was 13/14 at the time of V1. Jeff actually retired after V8 so now Casey and her team are leading the charge, and wrote V9's soundtrack. Casey also has her own band called OK Goodnight. Long comment ahead:
    - This Will Be the Day - A great OP to start our journey into the wold of Remnant, and the threats that are hiding in the shadows. Still one of my favs. As for your question; Monty, Miles, and Kerry had about 12 volumes worth of plot points that they wanted to hit, major beats. The details of course are subject to change because that's just the nature of writing stories when they're being written over years. As another commenter pointed out, the Maidens were something the crew came up with during V3's production. But the Silver Eyes were something from Monty.
    - Red Like Roses - First piece of music one will hear when starting RWBY, appearing in, of course, the Red Trailer. Mostly instrumental but the lyrics it does have hint at our members of team RWBY. Red like Roses, White is cold and always yearning, Black the beast, Yellow Beauty. The instrumental is insanely kinetic though.
    - Mirror Mirror - The music for the White Trailer, as expected, is so good for Weiss. Really playing into her fairytale allusion as well as going hard on the themes of isolation and loneliness she felt. The operatic high notes are godly, Casey really showing off how talented she is. The mirror in Weiss's song symbolizes the split between Weiss's heart and her mind. Her expectations vs how she really feels.
*- From Shadows (Trailer version) - There's also a full version. I'd suggest checking it out because it is so much better. Use FlyntofRwby's lyric video, even if it's just in your own time and not as a reaction. It is really weird that this compilation didn't have it.*
    - I Burn (trailer version) - This was also the version we heard in the trailer and is just basically a remixed medley of all four girls' songs. So not much to talk about. Fun beat.
    - Gold - This appeared in the credits of episode 2 I believe. A song from Yang to Ruby, as you said. The line "like the smell of a rose on a Summer's day" implies that Yang tried to emulate Summer when she had to basically raise Ruby while Tai was shut down for an undetermined amount of time and even after that. It's a very sweet song and very bittersweet after V3 because for the first time Yang couldn't bring herself to be the support that Ruby needed. Which is totally understandable given V3's traumatic events. And holy shit you actually hit the nail on the head for Yang's character. She's very self sacrificing, which ties into her semblance of taking the hits to come back stronger.
    - I Burn (full version) - Yang's anthem. Yang can and will kick your ass and you'll probably end up thanking her for it. Also our first introduction to the one and only rapping legend, Lamar Hall. What you listened to was the explicit version that they no longer sell anywhere. Jeff wrote this before he knew what audience Crwby were going for.
    - I May Fall - I'm not sure if this is the full version or not honestly, I've never been able to tell seeing as I actually don't listen to this one a lot. I don't think it is. Regardless it appeared in the episode 3 credits I believe, and was also used in V3 when Velvet started kicking ass. Heavy foreshadowing for sure, but also that they will persevere until the end.
    - Red Like Roses II - Appeared in episode 8 during the fight of the Teams vs the Nevermore and Deathstalker. This also marks the first and only appearance (thus far) of Casey's real life mother, Sandy, singing Summer's parts. Man this family is just so talented. And of course while this song is obviously between Ruby and Summer, a lot of this can be put on Yang as well since Summer was still her mom and raised her for at least the first six years of her life, and who she tried to model herself after (ala Gold). Banger. Absolute banger.
    - Wings - Volume 1 credits song. There's a bit of debate on who is singing to Blake here. Is it Weiss? Is it all of Team RWBY? Personally I think it's a Yang to Blake song. Mostly due to certain motifs and lyrical choices but that's just my opinion. Regardless, whoever it is is singing to Blake, letting her know it's going to be okay. Also, just a very different vibe from the rest of the soundtrack.
I know you've already recorded for 2 and 3's soundtrack I'm assuming so I recommend for V4-6 you use FlyntofRwby's lyric videos. They're just better quality, and come with fanart.

In answer to your question, yes, they had the end of volume 3 before they started filming the show. They actually came up with the rocket lockers for the scene with Pyrrha and Juane when discussing volume 3 and then had to go back through the previous 2 volumes to add in rocket lockers, including Cardin already sending Juanne on a trip in one already, so that the scene wouldn't be out of place. Monty and the writers loosely planned out the entire show before they started production. They tweak it here and there in response to fans, actors/acresses, or when something feels right/wrong. For example, Roman wasn't supposed to be a reoccurring character, but the fans loved him so much, they brought him back for an extra 2 volumes. Neo was based on a crossplay of Roman Torchwick that Monty saw and loved.
"I Burn" is such a great song. And I love that they toss in the "Super Saiyan" line as Yang basically does go Super Saiyan.
"I May Fall" comes on and I immediately get teary eyed.
In "Red Like Roses Part 2" we not only have Ruby having a conversation with her mother, but it's actually Casey Lee Williams' mother, Sandy Lee Williams, who sings the part of Ruby's mother. Casey's dad, Jeff, also provides some backing vocals as well as composing the song. I highly recommend checking out Caleb Hyles' cover of Red Like Roses, we get a nice surprise for the person who sings Summer's part. ( ua-cam.com/video/luk4YSHoQxY/v-deo.html )

Jeff Williams is the writer, male vocals, and the one playing all of the instruments in ever song, his daughter Casey Lee Williams, age 14 at the time of volume 1, is the female vocalist. Sandy Lee, Jeff's ex-wife (and still close friends) and Casey's mother, is the second female vocalist in my favorite song on the first OST, Red Like Roses part II. So where Casey sang Ruby's part, Sandy sung Summer's part, the actual mother and daughter combo!
Also, worth noting, some of those lyrics that were on the screen did not match up to the words sung (ie: "Worthless human rule" was actually "ruthless human rule").

As well, it's not "mirror what's inside me? Tell me can a heart be turned to stone" it's "fear of, what's inside me, tell me can a heart be turned to stone" and "hard to keep me from the world why won't you let me hide from me" should be "I can keep it from the world, why won't you let me hide from me", both small but imo fairly emotionally significant mistakes in Weiss' trailer.

Yes!!!! I'm so glad you're diving into the OSTs or at least the first one. Yes, everything is basically foreshadowing. When Monty Oum created this series, he already had an ending for everything in mind as he essentially had this road map of events and arcs which Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross were heavily involved in. The preplanned events were rearranged to fit the narrative and pacing better due to the time and budget constraints production was given. A few events in Volume 6 was supposed to happen in Volume 2 and others were moved around but it still follows and honors Monty's original outline. Anyhow, I want to apologize as usual for making my response long LOL.
A lot of the songs in future OSTs foreshadow plenty of stuff while also playing as a reflection to their current state of whichever OST's volume is. Each of the OP theme songs as well as the accompanied OP animation are basically spoilers that fans have eventually caught on to much later.
White Snow in "Red Like Roses Pt1", refers to Weiss Schnee as her name literally translates to "White Snow" her allusion being Snow White which is heavily alluded to with the use of "Mirror Mirror but the inverse of the Evil Queen which is what her Father Jacques Schnee is based off of.. And yes the Yellow Beauty refers to Yang just like Beast the "Beast Descends from Shadows" refers to Blake as she alludes to both "Beauty" and also "Beast" due to her faunus status. It's neat that you caught on to the "dance" part of the song as the fight choreography is sometimes referred to dancing.
Blake's theme "From Shadows" uses the (we) to refer to her past connection with Adam Taurus and her past ideals. And yes, It's White Fang 👍. Blake start to get more development in Volume 4 and Volume 5 so you'll learn of all the major players in Blake's past when she heads back home for a bit. Blake's got a lot of emotional and physical ghosts from her past she had to deal with.
For Yang, you brought up some good insight. And it's caused a lot of discussion among the fandom throughout the years. She's the caretaker but rarely has anyone to take care of her so she's always the sacrificial lamb of the group not to mention her "abandonment issues" take precedence in her emotional and mental journey. And what is discovered in Team RWBY's journey is that they all have their own version of lonliness. Yang has had to suppress a lot of her emotions for Ruby's sake while growing up so that she could create a safe and happy environment for her the same way that Summer Rose attempted to do. More of her story in Volume 4 and you'll see how her story is more entwined with Blake's the further the volumes progress. It's also the volumes where she is internally conflicted of her roles in Ruby's life where she sometimes blurs the lines between sister and parent-figure. That identity you mentioned for Yang is definitely something they visually showcase in Volume 8 so I hope you'll make it that far 😅and Even volume 9. Things get revealed slowly in RWBY. And Yang will get her development that is connected to Blake. Blake has a lot to do with Yang's growth and vice versa.
Not sure if you picked up any of the DC comic's version of RWBY's V4-v5 journey but according to the director and writer character, Kerry Shawcross, it's a good companion to Volume as it shows moments that were not included in the show due to those time constraints. It really fleshes out the Blake and Yang stuff and their connection to each other as well as Ruby and Weiss in their own respective comic issues. So according to Kerry at a RWBY panel, they're canon and written by Marguerite Bennett. The in-comic artwork panels might be a mixed bag for some but the cover art for each issue are beautiful.
Can't wait til you tackle other OSTs and RWBY media. Love your reactions!

Fun fact: it’s been confirmed by the writers that volumes 1-3 were actually supposed to all be together as the first volume, and the fall of beacon was supposed to be the first season finale. That’s why we get so much foreshadowing in the first volume’s soundtrack. This is one of the reasons I find the criticism of Salems existence so dumb, because that’s been planned since the start, it’s not a departure from what Monty wanted for the story. Sure volume 5 and onward can be criticized as such but it’s always been 3 writers, just because Monty isn’t here anymore doesn’t mean that the series is detached from his vision, I’d argue that it probably would have played out very similarly with the exception of better fights.

So Jeff knew a lot already while composing early volume OSTs.

Weiss for me has the best songs that also reflects her inner thoughs and development

One important note when analysing the character's themes is to remember that Yang's theme is "I Burn", but not really the remix version used in the Yellow trailer. I'm not sure that it's ever been explained why the remix version was used beyond it's easy applicability to the dance club Junior runs that we see in the Yellow Trailer, but her real theme is the standalone "I Burn" that appears after "Gold" on the album. Also worth noting that the version of "I Burn" you used is considered unofficial now, as there was a misunderstanding between Jeff and Rooster Teeth about what language was acceptable in the music, hence all later releases having two words altered in Lamar's rap section.

another possible interpretation of Yang's trailers song is that it relates to the fact that she doesn't really have a reason to be a huntress, she's in it for the thrill, and though she burns the brightest, she has no real goal to achieve and just goes along with what her teammates do, be it ruby's desire to do good, Weiss's desire to reclaim her the honor of her family name, or Blakes desire to make up for past misdeeds

I think it's a song from her perspective while she was a member of the white fang and the male voice is there because part of her Identity is attached to Adam.
Remember early on it is said that Adams more violent revolutionary ways yielded results because humans started to fear the faunus. For someone young and idealistic as Blake who's identity is deeply wrapped into the Faunus rights struggle (We see an image of her attending a protest at a very young age) Adam would be somewhat of a hero and apparently a love interest. The face of the movement she strongly belives in who gradually changes for the worse until he is a monster that she can't recognize anymore.
Also I don't think Blake should use the word "I" the way she uses "We" in the song makes it about the Faunus rights struggle. It's not a struggle that just she faces and Blakes identity is deeply wrapped up in Faunus equality.

  • @topgamer101

Red Like Roses pt 1 first lyrics are about the entire team. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang. They mentioned colors and the girls first letter of their first name is the same letter as the color. Red Like Roses pt 2 Is a lot more personal song to Ruby specifically. It actually doesn't include Yang at all, which I'm sure others have pointed out by now. I guess you could think of it as her speaking to the mother she barely knew like the two are speaking to each other over the realms of life and death.
Weiss' songs......oh boy. They are quite deep songs. Sometimes I don't feel the songs are incorporated into the show at the best moments, but the songs on their own tell a tale with her with each one adding a new layer. Considering the show does a poor job showing what she went through prior to getting to Beacon, something that was helped by the anime version of the show, but I HIGHLY recommend Weiss' music. She started as my least cared for of the main four and over the course of the show she shot way past the other ladies to the top of the list. The songs helped with that. As a person who has had many moments dealing with short temper and angry and hating myself, Weiss isn't the same as me, but there's a wavelength it feels like I can understand some of what she feels.
With Blake, Adam doesn't "run" the organization. He's something of a general I'd say. Higher than a basic fighter, but not running everything. Remember Blake grew up within the White Fang, so part of her identity for most of her life was the White Fang. Removing that from her identity is her struggle to define who SHE is. The one thing I'll say about Blake's song is I love how unique the feel of it is from every other song.
Yang's song having parts of the others was because she was at the night club and the DJ was playing altered versions of them. It's how the video showed it, plus it had more talking between her at the bar owner. As for the song I do get slightly annoyed they referenced "super saiyan" in the song, but several rwby songs do that later on as well. It is a choice they made and it's not to my preference they are referencing a bunch of other shows or real life things for the most part, but the song is still a banger so hard to hold it against them.
Side note, Tai needed to earn a living so his two daughters could have food and shelter, while also being depressed. If you are aiming negativity at Tai, that's a bit of a misfire on your part. You are making a bit of an assumption on Tai's part. I have more of a deadbeat father, Tai isn't that. You are reading too much into it. The later seasons will show this. Yang and Tai actually have a decently good connection. I'm not saying Yang doesn't have any negativity, but you seem to want to aim a sniper at Tai's head, which given their situation of him needing to earn a living for them despite what he was going through and still be a father, that's not easy either. It's not as one sided as you might think, and as I said I believe the show as it goes forward will make that more apparent.

@@Trailblazer_Ririna Oh, sorry for the confusion. What I mean is a little different than that.
For example: If you went to look for the songs yourself, and typed in "Volume 4 RWBY FlyntOfRWBY," UA-cam's search results would show you Volume 5 and 6 songs as well, whose thumbnails might have characters in them that you haven't met yet.
There wouldn't be an issue if someone just sent you a curated list of links, as the videos themselves don't have spoilery thumbnails once you've watched the Volume they came from.
So the songs in a playlist would be 100% spoiler-free.
Saying that though, the World of Remnant videos on RoosterTeeth's channel got a thumbnail facelift 2 or 3 years ago, and those were exactly what you said: Spoilery image in the thumbnail and popping up for a second in the beginning of the video. Honestly not a great choice by RoosterTeeth. But that's a different issue.
If you like, I have song playlists that I did for "Definitely Not Definitive"'s channel who started RWBY a little while ago. I can send you or your Mods the same links, guaranteed spoiler-free.

Yup, Monty Oum more or less outlined the main plot from the start. From what I read somewhere, Monty Oum's original outline would have lasted 20 volumes or so; Rooster Teeth cut it down to twelve, among other changes. (There were supposedly some fights about the direction of the series after Monty's death, with RT supposedly kicking out, from at least the creative team, some people, including Monty's widow, who supported Monty's original vision so they can make changes to the series. This means that RWBY, from Volume 4 onwards, is more RT's version than Monty's original vision.) It would have been nice to see Monty's intended vision, had he lived

4:35 The descriptions given around this point is about each of the characters. Red for Ruby, White for Weiss, Black for Blake, and Yellow for Yang.
After Monty's initial creation of Red Trailer and getting it green lit from Burnie, who was CEO at the time, Monty teamed up with Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross to flesh out the story of RWBY. They basically put together an outline of what they wanted to do through out the story line, and separated them out into the separate volumes that we see now.
Now story elements HAVE changed over time, like some fights had to be delayed in Volume 3, mainly due to Monty passing. So, they modified the story while they were building the story, but that's what happens when you are writting the story. Edits happens all the time.
Only half way though... back to listening to you.

19:00 Concerning Blake, for Volume 1 (as she explained it), she was born into the White Fang, having been organized [Information redacted due to future spoilers] (No spoilers from the FNDM PLEASE!).
So, her saying "We" over "I" makes sense. Because the White Fang grew up with her. Changed with her. You could say that the White Fang IS her... a little bit. But you see her breaking away from the White Fang in Volume 1, even though she still holds to some of the core philosophies of the White Fang (which is fine, the best philosophies that it has should be core for everyone).

    • @novocode
      @novocode 6 місяців тому

45:00 Unfortunately, the version you listened to/saw didn't have the greatest edit (imho). There is another edit out there that color coded who was speaking, Ruby and her mother. Red for Ruby and White for the mother, then they had a combined color when they sung in unison.
What was amazing about the song was, while Jeff was writing a good chunk of the songs, and his daughter was singing a good majority of the songs, it was unexpected to hear Sandy, Jeff's wife, come in to sing in unison with Casey, for the singing roles of Ruby and Ruby's mother.
So it was interesting to hear Casey sing for Ruby, and Sandy singing for the mother in a duet.
