      @@LakeHowellDigitalVideo Coincidentally, 2001 was when the Eclipse rocketed into the spotlight, in Fast and Furious. People wanted the name because of the movie. Being a rebadged Stratus, people quickly found out Mitsubishi doesn't give a 🐀 💩 about what we think. The name was for marketing hype. Nothing more. Just like the new truckie thing they call the "Eclipse".

      @@yubentrolled7097 Yeah, I owned a 1st gen. They were flimsy and poorly built. The later gens were much better cars even if they were a few tenths slower in the quarter mile. They didn't eat head gaskets like the turbo motors. They stopped offering the turbo because they couldn't keep up with warranty claims.

    • @yubentrolled7097

      @@LakeHowellDigitalVideo I still have my 99 Spyder GS and absolutely love that trim level. The SOHC 2.4 paired with the 5 speed, as long as you aren't wringing it out to redline, is bulletproof. Enough torque to get that fat pig on the freeway without too much strain on equipment. I guess that's why that engine stuck around so long.
      3G+ can be called "better cars". Like the Supra and the dollar store brand BMW "Supra". Better "car"? Sure. Better Supra? No. If consumers wanted a "better car", they would buy... a better car. Certain name plates we buy because they're cheap, fun and break necks, even today. The rattles, cheap trim and road noise are just reminders that cars haven't always been identical to their competitors.

    I bought my 2000 Eclipse GS brand new the day after I saw the television commercial ad and it is still my daily driver with 200K miles on it! It has been a great car and very reliable. Besides routine maintenance, the only issue that I had was the clutch slave cylinder started leaking at 90K miles, but was easy and inexpensive to replace...it still has the original clutch and alternator in it!

It only needed brakes,rotors , one A/c compressor and two clutch replacements. The girl in the commercial for the eclipse pop lock dancing got me! 😂 It was a great little car! I miss it sometimes.

    I still VASTLY prefer the previous two generations, and I remember hating this one when it was introduced, but I think this one aged reasonably well (in the sense that it doesn't look more than 20 years old). If it were introduced in a bubble (or by a different brand), it would have been remembered as a fine car.

    • @tinystar3010
      @tinystar3010 2 роки тому +4

      The reason it doesn't look much more than 20 years old is because its not much more than 20 years old lol at 22 years old, it definitely looks as dated as it is. The previous gen still looks newer than this one imo. The 3rd gen was so notchy and blocky looking.

    • @dodoubleg2356
      @dodoubleg2356 2 роки тому +7

      EXACTLY!!! Never figured out why they'd get rid of an AWD turbo 4cyl (considering in the mid to late 90's there weren't many of 'em) in favor of a, urgh, FWD NATURALLY ASPIRATED V6?!? That effectively removed the Eclipses identity & KILLED THE CAR.

    • @jordanprice9285
      @jordanprice9285 2 роки тому +3

      @@dodoubleg2356 Two reasons:
      NA powered cars were in at the time (RSX, 350Z, S2000, RX-8, Celica [Think about the cars that came out 2000 - 2005 and the previous gens of some of these same cars to their latest 00-05 versions]) So it only made sense they applied the same thing to the Eclipse like everyone else going NA
      2. Nobody really bought the GS-T & GS-X like everyone thinks. Only 5% total were sold throughout the *ENTIRE* DSM lifetime from 1990-1999. Out of over 1 mil sold, about 70k turbo models in general were sold in total give or take. Plus only 4% we're even GS-X models either. So the turbo clearly wasn't that preferred or bought. Hence, the 3G *_WAS_* supposed to be just the same, but I assume they caught those sales of the last two gens in total, and they said "no, let's change it last minute" as they did. Cuz the 2G was supposed to have a V6 but they changed that last minute too (1G & 2G can take V6 swaps as well depending on which models you have)

    • @justinbeal3517
      @justinbeal3517 2 роки тому

      @@jordanprice9285 Right on the money. However, I think it had more to do with going with a V6 than just going N/A altogether. The low end torque/smoothness of a V6 was becoming en vogue with the Big 3 and their Japanese bedfellows creating a bandwagon in the 90's to go that route instead of rowdy and peaky 4 bangers for higher performance FWD/compact/mid offerings in the US market. That was also better in terms in terms of "seat of the pants" performance when paired with the automatic transmissions of that era, which more to your 2nd point, most American buyers preferred. Aside from the DSM cars, Chrysler had pulled the plug on turbo 4 cylinders in exchange for a slightly different version of the V6 in this videos Eclipse, and their Avenger/Sebring were pretty much all but a "V6 2G DSM" and preview of the 3G Eclipse... Ford/Mazda dumped the turbo 4 from the Probe/MX6 in exchange for a V6. And GM had dumped their weird turbo 4 and the more premium versions of their NA Quad 4 motor for V6's.
      And it made sense for Mitsubishi as they were gearing up to grow their market share in the US... Oh whoops, I mean give away free cars with their failed 0/0/0 finance plan.
      Then of course Fast and the Furious came out and everybody wanted stuff like Turbo's and VTEC again...

Theres plenty of room and besides the dash being cracked and almost falling apart from the previous owner breaking the clips I havent had much issues. The 2.4l litre engine that comes in the rs and gs model also has a turbocharged sister thats in the galant and its supposedly a great engine if you want to turbo the n/a one yourself, be prepared to rebuild the engine though because nowadays most of them have so many miles that they wont hold up. The v6 models are very tight in space though im not sure how they would hold up with being turbocharged if you could fit one it. You seem to have forgotten that all the other, more common model were are N/A FWD cars. Although, I would not say the exterior was an upgrade (2nd Gen preferred over this), but performance and handling wise compared to the older gen FWD models is way better. Yes, it didn’t come with a “GSX” model, but there’s a reason why they were discontinued, and all of their performance cars in general. They just simply didn’t sell as well. People are going to hate me for this, but I personally prefer the 3G over all the others including the 1st two gens. Most notably I don't like the 2G the most. Just seems to try to hard for my taste. Plus, I love how much more strong the Manual transmission is compared to the earlier models and feels much nicer to sit in and drive than the older models. Plus, thankfully, not having a turbo wasn't a problem since it was able to push the same 200/205hp stock and was still just as quick as the GS-T of the day.
    I own one and I'm buying one with a 3.5L swap in a couple weeks from a buddy of mine. And lastly, we never got the 420A in these so we have the good choice of Mitsubishi only engines and transmissions thanks to not being a DSM.
    Not to mention the lower end 4 banger models are just a Evo 8 head swap away from being a 2.4L DOHC car. And like the guy said in the video, the 3G V6 is basically an affordable newer 3000GT with a better stock ECU you can actually tune from factory (the engine blocks are literally the same between each other so internals carry over and even the 4 bolt blocks can be interchangeable to fit as long as it's mated to the SOHC heads so you don't have to revert the ECU setup to the 3000GT style ECU's because it's much more primitive and requires it if you go DOHC.) It's really the best of both worlds.
