has happened to me, really makes you feel like you really don't know wtf happened
Brilliant explanations. Being aware of your front wheel's contact patch in relation to the steering axis, along with having enough bend in your elbows could probably eliminate over 90% of these kinds of crashes.
Another thing, 'light hands' could sometimes be a recipe for the dreaded jackknife. I am glad to see that you mentioned trying to keep the front wheel pointed to where you want to go.
I got more confidence after watching this video.
Line-Master Cathro hitting us with the knowledge on this one - "What the problem was, is that he rode straight into this big rock"
Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt for that crash @8:29 haha. It was a race, and I was definitely trying to push harder and was a bit too back seat.
Happened to me on an unassuming little trail, it doesn't take much, a little rock or root catches the tire when you're not paying attention and before you know it you're on the ground wondering what just happened
Really enjoying how hard Ben has to try to ride badly for the examples!
Oh, and of course loving your art work Cathro ❤
7:16 this is the reenactment we all needed. Good splaining.
As a French guy with an average level in English, I really do enjoy your videos and moreover your unique style and language: so British, half classy, half so funny!
Had this happen to me during my commute to work exactly one week ago as of the time of this posting (12/9/2024), right out the gate before I even left my driveway
Basically my commute starts on the left side of my driveway, I then bike to the right side to build up momentum, and then turn the other way immediately and slingshot myself back down to the other side and I am well on my way to work (or the bus stop more specifically)
Well my bike jacknifed during the turning around bit
Next thing I was on my side on the concrete, and my bike was overturned as well
Scuffed up both my hands due to me putting them out to stop my fall, got a pretty gnarly bruise on my right knee (later found out to be road rash through my jeans), and my shoulder was a little sore from me falling on to that side of my body
It wasn't really all that bad (it can always be worse), and I admit I am a tough lil' mf and it takes ALOT to make me think I 'm actually hurt
After maybe 2 seconds of being in a small daze, I laugh just thinking to myself _"whoops"_, I pick myself up, dust off, pick up my bike and I am on my way.
Hands are healed now, and my knee is on the mend
You definitely alluded to it with the physics of the problem but one common beginner mistake is to slam on the front brake mid berm. I'm sure this happened to me when I was learning as a kid but more recently I've seen both my kids do the same thing, if only there was a mattress next to them!
This series is just the most useful and quality content on the channel now! Thank you Ben!
I think overbraking is the cause of many jackknife incidents.
It’s hard not to grab the lever when your front wheel is slamming into a hole.
I tell new riders to control speed before an obstacle and look for a smooth place to control speed afterwards, and never ever grab the front brake in the middle.
Of course, as you said, line choice and position in the bike are really important too.
Basically, just do all the things right or you’ll face plant!
Great series of videos, love the physics explanations and the chalkboard. The dreaded jackknife has happened to us all, but as Ben says sometimes we can power through it… though often powering straight off the track.
Hoooray, Ben, you're back - Brilliant, very brilliant. I'm out of hospital now following surgery (complex hernia - nothing serious) and allowed to ride again. I absolutely love your tutorials. Regards Tony Sadler South Wales uk 🏴. I'm 68 and stick to blue and reds, and ride at Bike Park Wales and Forrest of Dean.
Pretty much anything Prof. Cathro says, I want to hear, because he’s sure to be giving good advice about something I’m doing badly.
very well explained 👍
I happen to know a little about the subject and the diverse type of visualization both on the board and falls from real life as well as the wonderfully recreated scenes show very clearly why this happens and how it happens.
Happend to me 4 weeks ago :(....unfortunately had be flown to hospital with broken shoulder plate.
Nice carp
Broke my glenoid in my R shoulder in '21 due to knifing. I thought my front wheel would go right over a root in the middle of a corner, it did not. Also, I got the bars to my quad and nearly had to have surgery for compartment syndrome. That quad didn't work at all for a couple weeks.
Ben Cathro is MTB's Tom Green
‘Let’s go get that stabby prick’ had me just about greeting
Freddy got jackknifed
Unleash the fury!
Ben, how about a how to video on how to practice. Picking areas to session/practice? cone drills? Hike a section over and over? Yeo!
So cool. Now I have a better understanding of my recent crush in the berm. I was coming too short, and it seems my wheel tried to JK, because I touched the bars with my chin. Managed to pull it into sliding instead and just fell to the inside, on my knee
The rock garden at around 14 minutes looks like the famous one on the Madonna della guardia trail in Finale Ligure.
Oh, and I became a teacher for the same reasons as Ben!
It is and it is far steeper than what it looks like on the video. Explains the defensive posture.
Yeah, I have a terrible memory for trails but that one's very distinctive. Pretty steep and sustained with a bewildering number of possible line choices.
Yep, I did the exact same thing 2 weeks ago at Snow Summit Bike Park. It happened at a pretty good pace as well coming off a jump, knocked myself silly, slammed my unpadded knees and fore arms into the ground, rolled my left thumb back to my wrist. Last, ruined a $300 plus Fox DH helmet in the process after bouncing it off the ground busting off the visor as well.
Bike polo had me get very familiar with Jacky mcknivy
Great stuff, really enjoying these how not to bike vids 👍
I did this both ways recently. Because of slow suspension rebound on loose over hard and then on a wet root. Doh.
Yesterday I finished a nice ride, had a look on my watch and hooked my pedal on a stone. I folded over and landed in the bushes.
Does the knock block just smash to bits under load when the wheels comes back to far from its Axs point? The bars turning with such a loose headset, as in loose I mean the bars turn way to easy I can do with a tension spring or band on mine to keep the wheel forward. Even a bush in the headtube slide over the tappered steerer like a DU bush would work with a ceramic insert
Its named after what we (🇨🇦) call a Jack knife, the truck accident comes second👍 On a bike it’s common mountain bike & road, when the rider does more steering than angulating and overloads the tire contact patch for speed and traction available😬😢😢
Gotta stay on the bars as you drop the ledge for a roll and push the hips back as you drop, not before. Attack/not defend.
Had it three times. First two were a front wheel wash out. Last one was the trunk of a tree I didn’t turn early enough for.
Best series EVER 😂
12:55 I saw on pinkbike how someone saved himself during nose dive by extremely stretching his hands up/forward. Great illustration.
Still nursing an AC tear after jackknifing my gravel bike on a fast descending turn. Narrower drop bars combined with a wee 47mm trail, leaning the bike over extra to engage the side lugs, hit a soft gravel patch and WHAM! at ~17mph...
Hindsight is 20-20. Could have been a lot worse.
I love how Ben starts every video with a shot of him banging on his bike with a hammer 🔨 😂. I’ve luckily only tucked the front going really slow and turning too sharply (cornering badly, in other words), but it still dumped me so fast I got a mouthful of dirt
super interesting happened to me begin sept 2024 I didn't fall because I was going very slowly dh a steep hiking trail and was behind the bike sitting on the wheel already, front wheel turned 90° instantly after hitting a large rock like case 1 but not racing, expecting to fail ready to jump down the bike at any moment so definitely defensive posture lol managed to hold the bike by the tip of the left handlebar after jumping down but it was close
The rocky section was finale ligure! Madonna🤟🏻🤙
9:56 wow that whole situation is pretty much the story of my life lol
This should have been an easy one... its when you have too much front brake and too much steering angle. its like 50/50 either the tire slides and you wash out, or the tire catches and you "jackknife"
Professor Ben brings it. Hell ya
Had a similar feeling with high acceleration when off-axis (going down a slope) where the front wheel produced a sort of “speed wobble”. Bars went left, right, and I was off the bike. I was like “Woah, didn’t know the bike could do that”
This video made me understand low speed compression
1:27 he said the line
Typical scenario:
1. Something causes you to lose your balance quickly. The front wheel whash out in a turn, or the front slides to the side of root or rock.
2. You reflexively turn the handlebars to regain balance, but you overcook it. This isn't a decision, it's how the neural network has been working since you learned to balance on a bike.
Great! Preamble too long though.
Happened to me yesterday on a run in to a jump, on a hard gravel road. Gonna be a while till all this skin grows back, my disappointment is already immeasurable.
Are you running a shimano cassette with a sram transmission?
Had a close call years ago jack knifed landing back in a concrete bowl on the bmx and took the side off my face and shoulder. Never ridden without a fullface ever since
hahahahahahahahaahaha 😆 excellent texting and drawing ^^
Ben is now King of PinkBike 👑
Wash out is the worst! I try to lean forward much as possible to weigh down the front tire. But doesn't always work lol
I've never had a jackknife tho. I guess I'll probably experience 1 soon enough 😂I don't see anything to help not getting 1 except for picking the best line 🤷🏻♂️
MA BOOOOOOI STEEEEVE! Made my day😄
what most ppl overlook the fact that they rotated their handlebar way too forwarded which increases the chances of jack knifing.
6:49 this is how Jack Moir crashed recently and broke his colar bone. Hit the three root with his front wheel.
Biker Crashes - Ben: „BEEAAUUUTIFUL, Lets get a good look at that!!!“
7:15 when she's waiting for you to get the cloth 🤣
Oh nice thank you
omg, I got a dead leg, killed my confidence on the part of the trail. still trying to get back to speed. so dumb but yet so hurtful.
do you have Shimano cassette with t-type?
It's diagonal roots or small logs that get me. They are my enemy. Video please
This must be how I broke my collarbone on a flat turn…
What's up with the Shimano XT cassette paired with a SRAM Transmission T-Type derailleur on Cathro's Bike?
Well, it works 😅
I have to go back and watch a GoPro video of one of my crashes because I have never figured out why I jackknifed where I did
On which video does cathro pancake that berm in the intro??
Amazing segment Ben. This one had me scratching my head all season where I bought a pair of brakes too powerful for a light bike. I kept jackknifing and really messed up my knees due to all the crashes. Based on your explanation, turns out that the rapid deceleration on a downward gradient (decreased trail) caused all those crashes. Installing weaker brakes fixed the issue. Another factor was bars too wide which compounded the issue.
In Brazil we have a bike that you can actually jack knife, we call it “maria mole” bike
Is it just me or does that guy at 14:00 have no where near enough pressure in his front fork? Seems way too soft and what partially contributed to the crash as he had way too much travel use on that small drop down
7:22 that hapens easy if the roots are wet and it is not a fun sensation. I hate wet roots
Just happened to me previous thursday.
top left of the white board at 8:59
We call it "augering" - and it sucks!
‘stabby prick’ 😂
I'll stop as soon as the trail quits forcing me.
Thank you for that very good explanation. I do find you funny, but maybe that many jokes add quite a bit of unnecessary length to the video.
i think I watch these videos just for the intro
Broke 4 ribs when I jack knifed on a nothing burger and got the end of the handle bar to my chest
And then your collar bone snaps
Trzy cztery żółta flaga 🙂
"knife jack"
Knack Jife
Who else saw the Easter egg next to the pb logo on the board? 😅
Oh man, that’s ridiculous! I totally missed it at first
Interesting. But those pseudo-funny cringe jokes wannabe are so annoying...Not against adding jokes here and here, but quality over quantity.
first
Watching this the day after a gnarly jackknife 🫡
