Going back to your video on slavery, the western culture couldn't enter Africa because of the diseases, Malaria etc etc, that's why places like Benin were the slave capitals, they were by the coast and the Africans done the collecting and selling...
Seems like it's partial insignificance is a factor. One doesn't get invaded as often because we're the tinned tomatoes you bought a year back. Sure, you could be diligent about your food cupboard, and bringing the oldest tinned food to the front... or you can assume you'll probably forget to buy tinned tomatoes in the next few years and need to make a ragu (if we're keeping is British a Tikka Massala). Eventually that can of tinned tomatoes will stagnate, and the tin will rot, and the grotesque tomato gunk make an acidity drive engine to take over the world... for a bit.
The water transport within a nation, such as canals, was used to move cheap bulk commodities (iron ore and coal). Land transport tends to be used to move more expensive, manufactured goods. The end result of why you wanted / used the cheap bulk commodities to start with. If you don't build that infrastructure to feed manufacturing, you're going to fall behind economically.
Geography/geology also plays a major part in terms of the availability of natural resourses which ultimately determines a nations wealth and prosperity. For us it was an abundance of coal, without which the industrial revolution could not have happened. This led to the steam engine and ultimately to the revolution in powered factories and rail transport. But lets not forget the building of Englands very extensive network of canal systems prior to the industrial revolution. Canals were the best and only way at the time to easily and efficiently carry resources in bulk internally to and from towns and cities using horse drawn barges. This was only possible due to the land being relatively flat, so again England got lucky with its geography. So England, through its canals was already enjoying an advancement that was above that of other nations even before the industrial revolution. As with all progress though, canal transport and the many associated industries were eventually all killed off when the faster steam railways came along.
Colonisation is another of those ubiquitous facts of nature. Most species colonise, Australia's Aborigines colonised Australia from the North. Australia at the time of the colonisation was believed to be uninhabited but is was still colonisation The current indigenous population of the United States, also colonised America both initially and at later times, replacing the people who were then occupying the land. In fact, the Bantu people's in Africa, making up large parts of the south of the continent came from the North West, and pushed many of the indigenous people out. Most of the middle east was Christian, after the conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity. The Islamic Empire invaded and took over these lands, forcing many to convert to Islam in order to avoid slavery. Note: There would be NO Polar Bears if European Bears hadn't colonised the arctic wastes. termites colonise everything they can, completely destroying the environment as they go.
Well, "simply" is not the word... That term tend to make people think there was no industry before the "industrial revolution". Although that's in fact, completely untrue. There were both heavy and fine specialised industries all over the developed parts of Europe in the early 1600s. Any heavy goods were transported by boats, long before there were trains.

Saying geology helped the UK is something of an understatement lol. It gave us some of the best quality raw materials needed to make great quality products required by the World at the time. The quality of coal from various parts of the UK ment we could use it to obtain higher temperatures quickly and more cheaply than other countries. Plus high grade iron ore was another advantage. Britain and Europe as a whole, advanced from 1500 onwards because of a sheer fluke - the Roman alphabet could be printed easily with moveable type. Arabic and Chinese could not.
What makes Western-European civilization different from all the others before is that it got on a path of ever accelerating development and growing advancement. In the 17th century there were already a lot more inventions, innovations, developments, changes, discoveries etc. than in the 16th, same for the 18th and 19th compared to the 17th century. The combination of the printing press, the scientific revolution, the connectivity and the exchange of ideas and goods and modern capitalism and freedom was simply unstoppable.
Bollocks ! So due to others not having worked out how to print text, something Sumerians had worked out, and were able to invent printing a machine it's all a fluke. How many Europeans could read in 1500 ?
Im a proud Englishman no amount of skewed news reports about how evil our Empire was will ever sway me from understanding the importance of the British people in the development of the modern world, from our laws to our technology and religion we've spread as much of it as far and wide as we possibly could for the betterment of everybody because we're a good people.
Thank you for reacting to this. I, like you, hadn't thought about how geography affected a country's advancement and as soon as Thomas Sowell said it I realised, like you did, that it is fundamental. Before the British invented the railways, we dug canals to connect towns and cities and, then, to connect those canals to the sea, to make the movement of goods easier and quicker to transport. The roads, in general, were not so good here then and were often only used by local wagon and carriage traffic. All the best. Love from the UK
Britain didn't advance before other European nations. I respect Thomas Sowell but he clearly only reads English. Italy, first Flanders and later the Dutch Republic were far more advanced than Britain. It's only after the Dutch invasion of 1688 with the subsequent introduction of modern capitalism (the Bank of England in particular) and the revised political system that Britain got among the most advanced. Nations don't progress linear, allthough exaggerated in importance and flattered in meaning, England was early with the Magna Charta for example, but in the 500 years in between others made greater steps in civil rights, not limiting it to nobles. The British tend to look back at their own history and make all firsts in British history first in the world.

Well I did and I noticed that many British believe that they invented the sandwich because a Brit named it in English. I noticed too a lot of things they claim to originate from there were actually taken over from the Dutch and then some minor addition suddenly makes it British in origin. The Netherlands was only the most advanced nation for one and half century, so I assume the British have done the same thing with a lot of things that have French, German or Italian origin.
