It really depends on your particular situation. You could use a rack mount system or just a simple shelf for a few devices. If your going to expand your network a rack mount or patch panel would definitely help. Thank you for watching.
You don't need a switch but it depends were the ethernet port goes to. Does it go to a router somewhere in the house? It will only work if its connected to your network router.
Hey! I want to make the ethernet jack/port in my living room hot/active. How do I know which wire in my data hub in the closet will make the living room location hot/active?
The wires in your data hub should be plugged into a router or switch that has internet connectivity. Then that data port will be active. My channel has dozens of videos on that subject so make sure to check them out. Thanks for watching!
QUESTION: I have wall Ethernet Jack which I intend to hardwire and connect my tv. However, when I go to my central hub where all the Ethernet cables/wires converge, I am not sure which of the cables/wires corresponds to the one I am trying to hard wire my tv with the wall outlet. Is there a way to find or identify the right corresponding cable so I can then plug that into a switch. There are just too many loose lines and I don’t know which is which. Btw, it is just loose wires, so I have to create an Ethernet tip/Jack to plug into a switch box. Thank you
You will need to terminate the loose ethernet wires into RJ4 connectors and then use a network cable tester that has mapping tools to find which wire goes to the TV or just plug one wire in at a time to the central hub and check your TV for internet connectivity. Also when you decide to do this make sure to label the ethernet in your central Hub to avoid this problem. I label all of my ethernet cables.
We bought a pre built new house. Now every room has a coax port and an ethernet port. However there are two distribution boxes, one for the ground floor and one for the first floor. Now the thing is we got a fiber internet installed, so they just ran a cable into our dining room, connected it to a router and we have internet. But i want to activate those ethernet ports along with the coax ports. But no one can quite figure out how to actually set it all up. Any help/advice?
Those ethernet ports and coax from all the rooms lead to one location or distribution box. You need to connect those ethernet cables to the router or add a network switch to the router for more ethernet ports. I have hundreds of Home networking videos on this subject so make sure to check them out. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.
I'd like to run wire for a new (never had cable TV, only DSL internet...) wire for new fiber internet service. I have a small house ( >600ft sq) and was thinking I'd only have one Cat outlet. Can I just run a Cat5 or Cat6 wire through my attic and have the service hooked to it outside ? Not doing anything high speed, like gaming....just basic new service.
Your ISP will run that wire inside your house for you. You want your modem and router to be inside your house to keep the devices from getting hot and also for security as well. Just pick up a cheap wifi6 router and you'll be all good. I have plenty of router links in my video descriptions. ASUS or TP-Link are fantastic brands. Good luck and keep me posted! Thanks for watching!
Purchasing a new built with 5 bedrooms. there will be 7 tvs through out the house. I want to hard line the tv's as not to spend the money on 7 cable boxes but use the bulit in smart tv apps that are preloaded into the tvs so i can use the wifi for tablets and other small devices. what kind of setup do I need?
You can hardwire the tvs with ethernet or just use the builtin wifi that most tvs have. Ethernet is faster and more reliable if that's a priority for you. Just make sure to get a good wifi6 or wifi6e router to handle your wireless network. I have dozens of videos on this subject so check out my channel and the Playlists. Thank you for watching and keep me posted.
Hi, quick question how do I identify which CAT6 wall connection goes to the network panel? I have one CAT6 wall connection but I don't know where it connects on the network panel in order to run an ethernet to my router. I appreciate the help!
Either use a Network cable tester to map the ethernet or plug one ethernet into the router at a time and see when the other end gets an internet connection.
I don't see a network panel anywhere in my house built in 2018. I do see about 4 or 5 white cables going to different rooms where they sit behind coaxial jacks, but the cables have CAT5 printed on them. They do all come to a central location but they end in a coiled bundle that has no connectors, just kinked ends wrapped in electrical tape. Does this mean I have to go buy a network panel, and if so, how do i put them in? We have been getting internet from a line of sight modem on the roof our ISP installed. We plugged the other end into our wireless router and that has worked for us but i would like to make use of the wired connections we seem to have.
You don't need a Network Panel but its nice to keep everything enclosed and hidden away. Your situation is fine and you don't need a panel. Where is you wireless router located? You need to move the wireless router to the area where the cat5 cables are located. Then plug those cat5 cables into your LAN ports on the wireless router. If you have too many cat5 cables you can buy a cheap switch to expand the wired network off of the wireless router. Now your rooms will have full network connectivity. Good luck and keep me posted. Thanks for watching!
@@UltimateTechHub Thanks - I've been learning some stuff on the internet and it looks like I just need to get something called a crimping kit (I think) to attach Cat5e plugs to the ends of the cables by following a color code on which wires go to which slots in the plugs, and get some wall plates for the other ends of the cables. Since we will definitely need more ethernet jacks going through the same router, I'll need to get a switch or repurpose our old router to function as one (disable the radio, change some settings).
So i gotta question my router has no ethernet cords atached to it but it has the circular cord atched to it. So im trying to get my router to connect to my ethernet plug in my room, how do i do that?
The ethernet plug in the other room where does the other end go to? You need to find that connection and connect an ethernet cable from it to the routers LAN port.
My network box is in the basement of my house and my router and modem currently are on the first floor. If I move them to the basement would that weaken Wi-Fi signals especially if I’m on the second floor since the router is farther away?
Yes it would weaken the wifi signal. You can place your router in the basement and add 1 or 2 mesh wireless nodes to the second floor. Or you can add a 2 router to your network. I have a video on 2 routers 1 network. Let me know if you want the video link.
No, you need all of the ports in your house to run to one location like a network panel. Then connect all of them to a router and or switch. Here is a video that explains the process. ua-cam.com/video/NV7Ay6KyB8U/v-deo.html
hi. i moved my combo cable modem 3.1 router to a bedroom from laundry room. four rooms have hardwire cat 5 jack. how do i activate the jacks so i can connect ethernet cable? the laundry has a cheap sort of non-powered cat 5 panel where all the cat 5 runs to. thanks in advance
The panel where the cat5e runs to you need to put your modem router I there. Then connect the cat5e wires to the router. They will work then. Thank you for watching I really appreciate.
Can you run an additional switch from a wall outlet? Like if I have a TV and an Apple TV that I want to run ethernet to both of them but only have one ethernet port at the wall, can I install a switch and use that basically like a splitter?
Thanks so much, that was very helpful. I’m assuming that even if you get a nice switch like that, you’re still limited to whatever ethernet your house was originally wired for?
90 yrs old! Not tech savvy. Hv an inexpensive earthernet TP-Link_B347 which I disconnected due to severe weather power surges. I forgot into which port the 3 of 4 cables go . One is obvious.. This is for an RV in park with Fiber Optic outside window. Does the one from outside go to #1 port etc.
It doesn't matter which LAN ports you plug the ethernet into they will all work. Just make sure the connection from the internet goes into the WAN port on the router. Good luck and keep me posted!
So I game a lot with my cousins especially call of duty and the router for AT&T some how is in my room so I can easily connect the Ethernet cable straight to the router but my coursing plays in the living room can he plug an Ethernet cable into one of the wall Ethernet jack or does he have to run another cable straight to the router ?
You need a ethernet from the router to the living room. Sorry that's how it has to be setup. Thanks for watching and if you subscribed thank you as well.
So basically I have the panel in my room. But the modem (WiFi box) is in the living room. For the cat5e wall ports to work, I would need to put my modem (wifi box) in the pane as in connect in there??
Yes that is exactly how you should set it up. Modem to router and if you need any extra ports buy a 5 or 8 port switch. I have a video on the TPlink 8 port switch. Its easy plug and play. Good luck and keep me posted. Thanks for watching.
Hey, I have alot of network ports and have a "on-q" in my closet. I dont see any network cables, but i see alot of random cat5's *i have audio in my house. is this it

10 minutes for 2 ethernet lines seems pretty fast. He's probably not going through drywall. Wired connections are totally worth it and better than wifi. My only concern is how is he going to run those 2 cables? Keep me posted and thanks for watching I really appreciate it!
@@UltimateTechHub Not sure so he’s probably not gonna fish it through the installation is free too but I’m wondering if it’s faster than wiring it from the router and should it work I might use it for my PS5 too I’ve asked for the double port ones

@@UltimateTechHub I have an update! I found the network panel… albeit with much difficulty… and found out that all but one cable was disconnected. I plugged in the one that matched the one in my room. I’ll give another update if it works or not now.
Very basic question. What's the advantage of running so many ethernet wires? I know you can hardwire internet to tv's, gams, other devices, but then what. Just starting to look into wiring our new build home. I guess I'm assuming you can then watch the signal from any device on another device? Are there other things needed to achieve that?
If you are building a new home run cat6 or cat6a ( 10gig speeds) to every room in your house. If you can afford it run 2 cat6 to every room. It's always good to have a back up in case 1 wire fails. All of the wires should meet up in 1 location where your modem , router and switch will be like a network panel or server rack. The advantages are super fast always on connections which allow streaming 4k or even 8k video with zero lag. Each room could have a switch to add more wired connections. Wired Iis always better than wireless. Also install a cat6 in the ceiling in the center of the house for a wireless access point. I have over 80 networking videos so check them out to help answer more of your questions.
Will data cable work for wall sockets ? By that I mean connecting my router to the wall socket via Data cable, and receiving it in an other wall socket via Ethernet. (CAT6 btw, idk if that makes a difference)

Just ethernet chords and one other white chords hanging out. Is there a way i can set this up myself to give internet to the house, or do i have to get an internet guy to come and set it up in the leviton box instead of in the livingroom?
You can do this yourself. The white cords in the box should be coax for your modem. Just switch the modem from the living room to the leviton box. you will have to call your ISP to ping the modem from the new location. Then connect the ethernet cables to the router and your all good. keep me posted.

No the ethernet ports will not work unless they connect to the routers LAN ports. He probably meant your wifi is good to go. Where do the ethernet wires run to? Is it in a network panel?
If your house does not have any ethernet cables installed then you will need to wire drop some car5e or cat6 through the attic into your desired rooms and the other end of those cat5e or cat6 should meet up in one location in a closet or laundry room. This area is where your network devices will be installed like modem and routers and switches. I have probably 50 plus videos on this topic. Check out my Playlist Ultimate Home Networking. I’m not sure where these cables are meeting maybe the main tv box?
Well you know your home better than any of us here, I would hope. You'll have to figure out where those ethernet cables go to. They may end up in a dedicated network closet, a closet in a room or some media room. Once you locate the cables, there should be a patch panel of some sort where they terminate or they may have some RJ-45 plugs. You will need to have your internet equipment in that room to plug in ethernt cables from the router to the panel or plug the cables coming from the various rooms to your router. If you need more ports than what your router has, you can plug in a network switch. Once you make the connections, your ports in your rooms will be active and you can use them.
I tried plugging my cat5e ethernet cable into my router which went into a ethernet port in my basement. Then I had a cat6 cable plugged into a port upstairs which plugged into my pc. Am I doing this right because I tried this and it did not work
If you mean internet box to be the modem then yes. From the modem you need to connect a router from the router connect your ethernet cables that run through house. As far as the Ethernet cables if you have Cat 5e that is plenty. You will get up to 1 gigabit speeds. If you have Cat 6 you will get up to 10 gigabit speeds. But all of this depends on your internet service provider and your data plan. Thanks for watching and if you subscribed thank you as well.
@@lilgerm383 there is no power in your data connection. If there is no data coming from the ethernet then check the other end of the ethernet line. It has to be plugged into a router or a switch.

I currently have cox fiber for WiFi.. I have a new house that has all the Ethernet cords pulled to one location. How do I get this to work properly?
Thanks for sharing the info. I connect my all my devices with Wi-Fi router(have built in router and modem)does it mean I am not using a switch.
Yes you are not using a switch. You can plug a switch into the router if you need more ports for additional devices.
Thanks for this. Very helpful for new house.
I have many ethernet ports but can't seem to find the wiring in the basement. Any tips ?
Check outside by your garage or attic space.

@@Forfun67 Yes.

So do u need to connect your internet box to the network panel? Also does each ether net cable vary on how strong the connection is?
If you mean internet box to be the modem then yes. From the modem you need to connect a router from the router connect your ethernet cables that run through house. As far as the Ethernet cables if you have Cat 5e that is plenty. You will get up to 1 gigabit speeds. If you have Cat 6 you will get up to 10 gigabit speeds.
