Great interview. Even without the visual prompt, it would have felt like the cosiest fireside chat. And Santo, of course, is an absolute legend: football expert, cultural commentator, 'writer' (it says so on his passport!) and weatherman extraordinaire.
Great interview with Santo !! Love him from the late show days. Is the autobiography he recommended about Ange this one- Angeball: The Definitive Biography of Ange Postecoglou
Thanks Michael! The book you mentioned is a biography written by football journalist Vince Rugari. Ange's autobiography is called 'Changing the Game: Football in Australia Through My Eyes'.
Great video. Sorry to dial in on the football but I wonder if the reason commentators criticise Ange for not having a plan B is because of what his squad and its depth. You are 100% correct that Klopp never had a plan B as such in terms of his style of play but he had much more quality of depth in his team in that even his bench was world class (not to the levels of Man City but still pretty good). This meant that if Klopp's plan A was not working he could bring on one or two substitutes who were world class and the difference in the player's style meant in effect there was a plan B, albeit a subtle change to Plan A. The gap between Klopp's starting IX and the rest of his squad was not as great as the gap between Ange's starting XI and rest of his squad. So when things are not working he has to change how the starting XI play mid game, as he does not have Klopp's luxury of a bench full of superstars who change up the team by the nature of their different playing style. Not criticising you guys or Ange (In Ange we trust!!) just wondering if he gets more cattle with a deeper squad that will silence the call for a plan B as he use substitutes to nuance his play like Klopp and Pep did/do.
Thank you! First of all, 'no plan B' seems to be a constant criticism of Ange until his team's success makes it invalid - so it's worth remembering that for context. But anyway, I certainly agree with you. The squad isn't as strong as the other teams you mentioned. Nor is it as strong, in relative terms, as his previous teams. The A-League and the J-League are much more even competitions, and the unevenness of the SPL worked in Ange's favour as he was at the one club that could outspend all the others. Tottenham is a much tougher challenge, let's hope he does something special! -Ray
