The camera shake was accidental. Cameras on tripods on a wooden floor shook every time he thumped the tools on the floor. He liked it and left it in.

With any bass voice, you get that grit with all notes below about C2. This was explained by the Charismatic Voice: the vocal folds are moving slower than the air escaping, so we actually hear the buzz of the air between the vocal fold oscillations. Even most bass singers cannot get below C2, so very few people have even heard this phenomenon. Geoff is just getting warmed up at C2... to go MUCH deeper.

You're referring to pulse register which he isnt using here.

    • @johndeeregreen4592

@centsLair, no, this is for pure chest voice. I have known about this phenomenon for a very long time (I am a basso profundo; trained with over 30 years experience). It is not something you hear from an average bass, since they cannot get below a C2 to be able to hear it. Listen to any low bass, when they cross that threshold from about C2 or B1 to B1 or A1, you will start to hear a crackle in the note. If you REALLY want to hear it, listen to an Oktavist in chest voice below an F1 or so.
Listen to a low bass speak sometime, when they hit low articulation points of their voice you will begin to hear what sounds like vocal fry. It's not, however. What you are hearing is the note frequency is so low and slow, you begin to hear the air escaping; creating a fry-like, buzzy tone mixed in with the principle frequency.

This is a great reaction! This is one of two mining-related songs he has done (the other is 'Big Bad John') - fyi, that isn't a cello but a string bass (also known as an upright bass), played using a plug-in on his midi keyboard, like any other instrumentation (strings, percussion, etc.) he adds to his solo pieces. I get the comparison with The Straycats, by the way! 😉Oh, and it's always worth turning the CC on, as he often puts some humour in there!

Enjoyed your reaction, thank you. When Elizabeth from Charismatic Voice listened to his new one, Wicked Game, she commented/pointed out that in the lowest notes what we are actually hearing is the puffs of air between the false vocal folds, and that gives a sound of gravel but isn't. In higher notes the vibration is too high for us to hear this, but go low enough, with a slow enough vibration, and we can. It was news to me and I thought I'd share. Her reactions go into the technical aspects and are fascinating if you happen to be a music geek.

"Sixteen Tons" was my dad's ABSOLUTELY favorite song in the world (well...except for "Indian Love Call" from the 1924 operetta "Rose-Marie").
    Indian Love Call...
    ua-cam.com/video/QSCg4r1oXDg/v-deo.htmlsi=-7Z0tYCFT5zSN1B0
I used to sing the soprano part for that one (and I can now hit ALMOST all the high notes again...I'm so stoked), while my dad sang tenor. Mom would usually play her violin as we sang (I miss those days!!!).
Carlos...I just sang along with Geoff for this ENTIRE song. I can fairly easily hit and sustain that lowest note. I'm sorry (grin). For many years, those were the ONLY notes I could really still hit. Thankfully, I can now get back up into a fairly good high soprano, as long as I pay close attention to, and work hard at the register changes I have to make. This makes me very happy. For most of my life until about 2006, I had a range of just over six octaves, and I LOVED using that range to good effect. 😀
Oh, and you can see and hear Ernie Ford's original rendition of "Sixteen Tons" on UA-cam, now!

My brother sang it during the last musical of the year at our high school, the year he graduated--the year after I graduated). He and his barbershop quartet acted it out. It was terrific!

@karenm5681 -- If you're referring to the metallic tapping that begins at 3:04, it's not Carlos' beard jewelry (and that IS what it's called...just do a quick search online). 😀
That metal never touched the mic or the mic stand, and there's nothing else which it COULD touch, to make that metallic click..
Watch the Geoff at the far left. He's tapping the mining hammer with a smaller metal hammer...lightly...just enough to make that lovely "tick," as being the sound that the hammer might make, in the mine, if you're at a slight distance from it. At 4:28 Carlos talks about how he loved that sound.
At 5:33 he comments on it, again, with a nod of his head, "THAT!"
At 5:48, Carlos nods again, and states, "HAMMER!"
The same things were happening while Carlos played back the "glides." It wasn't in any way, his beard jewelry.

It may be difficult to hear but if you watch, the sounds I’m hearing connect exactly with the times Viking’s beard jewelry hits that top horizontal bar of the pendant he’s wearing, (near where it connects to the chain.) It’s a tiny little “tink!” sound of metal on metal while Viking is talking. It doesn’t at all happen during Geoff’s song.
