I recently played a (disastrous) game as the dukes/duchesses of East Anglia. I focused hard on development over expansion, and ended up being the wealthiest duke in all of England after two generations. This expansion would make a similar playthrough even better.
Some artifacts like swords (and other craftable items) should definitely be kept by your character (or your heir) even if you lose "King/Emperor" status and the court with it. I'm sure you would agree with me OPB. It wouldn't make sense if the sword you crafted or took from a fallen foe automatically goes to some other random character just because you lost your status. It would only makes sense if we lets say lose it in the chaos of battle or you fall in battle or through some other event that makes sense. I think this is a nuanced topic and some thought has to go in it. For example, if there is a pretender who we are at war with. If that pretender wins the war through several battles, and eventually sieges our capital and our capital falls to our foes, and we lose our status because now we have to agree to enemy's demands; then it makes sense if he decided to take all the artifacts. But if lets say we agree to their demands before there's even a war or we agree to their terms during war (meaning war score hasn't reached 100%) but we still hold the capital and our artifacts are still with us, then we shouldn't lose them if we lose our status.
I hope its all of the above Like super sick to have a sword dedicated to your house, also super sick to have sword linked to the crown of a kingdom. Wars or events to reclaim relics would also be super cool.
The way I understood it, artifacts are kept by characters regardless if they have access to a throne room or not. What the throne room does is displaying them, which affects the grandeur of the court.
Gotta love german fairytales No, we don't actually have them, German fairytales tend to be brutal instead of weirdly sexual. The Emperor's New Clothes is the closest real fit i could think of and that's danish
Honestly when I've heard about courts above duke-tier only I've been disappointed a little. Not that I play as count or duke often, but I found it not fair. Your idea of bottom to top participation in court, simple as it is, is brilliant and I really hope devs will take that approach. I also hope that the court will be very alive. More micro than macro. Of course scheming in the corners you could miss your enemy's army crossing borders, but hey if that is not a role play I don't know what is. That could enhance one area I miss in CK3: feelings. I'd like to see more factors: jealousy (changing opinion among the neighbours, vassals, courtiers, lovers, even children), vengeance (trial-by-combat or CB for killed or humiliated relative or friend), power struggle (claims for spouses, lovers on one hand and council members or powerful vassals on the other; palace coups made by angry courtiers and unpaid men-at-arms; vassals conspiring with their liege's neighbours; allies changing sides (I miss mercenaries changing bankrupt patron from CK2; they were very role-playing) and so on...
I agree in that they should move almost all events and happenings into the 3D court room. (even if Paradox don't, I give modders a week) It would be so fun to roleplay a ruler who just doesn't give a crap about courtly drama and simply doesn't show up to court that often. You could also be much more closely tied to your characters and their daily lives, as it currently feels a bit like a highlight reel, with most days just being empty. Feasts would benefit most from this, as currently it's very strange to have literal weeks pass between events, which is honestly immersion breaking. With this DLC you could put the speed to 1 or even pause, walk into court and have a pleasant feast with your courtiers and vassals. I would prefer if counts and dukes also had courtrooms, as I feel they may miss out on some integral parts of courtly life, but i can understand the performance strain on giving literally every landed ruler a 3D modeled environment. If nothing else I think lower rank characters should be able to visit their kings' courts. With tribals and nomads, i hope they get their own courts eventually, because just imagine entering a huge longhouse to talk to the local Jarl, or entering the yurt of a nomadic lord ravaging your lands, to sign a peace treaty. Introducing more 3D environments could honestly make CK3 a new genre defining Simulation-Strategy, which is a genre that many people would be interested in. (Just imagine having a 3D model showing the outcome of a battle for example, with scavengers scouring the battlefield; or imagine a besieged castle, where you could manually go around and make sure all defenses are attended to, and if you miss one, the enemy might have an easier time getting in. Also holding court while under siege could have it's own, special events and mechanics.) Even the duel system could look fricking amazing if Paradox made just a few preset 3D scenes, instead of the current (already pretty cool) 2D art in the background. With the development times, I agree that it's better to have them work longer if it results in these intricate, massive interconnected systems. If you can't tell I'm very excited about the potential. I don't think I've ever typed a longer comment in my life.
And it's a truly outstanding comment! The most important part to me is indeed the willful choice of dealing with just not entertaining the court at all! Difficult? Sure. Doable? Likely! Moooore character options are always great!
Reminds me of the cutscenes from total war titles for spies and stuff. looooved it the 1000th time as much as the 1st. Nothing like watching my spy crush their god king with a boulder
The stress mechanic and the limitation of Never being able To improve your education or even get multiple educations i Hope they change it and i do Think the are 100% make it so you Can get multiple educations and improve it eventually
@@OneProudBavarian Another rare ward interaction is one where they state that they're very grateful to you for educating them and get a "impressed" opinion modifier for quite a while. I've only got it a single time, and that's a shame, really. It really caught me offguard and made me feel like we had this master/aprendice relationship. I was sure to make them reach great places after that!
@@HelloThere-zb2kk these are things I would love to see more often! Vassal relationships being more prominent via Royal Court adds so much, so let's hope these occasions become more frequent as well!
Ive gotten vassals asking me to educate their children in my Byzantine Empire playthrough and also a playthrough i did as one of the Kings of India. But before those two playthroughs i had never gotten it.
The king of Ireland might be small, but I think we need courts for HRE (arch-)dukes. It would be more of a problem in eu4's era but I think at least HRE-dukes should have some court
I forgot archduchy of Austria is a kingdom title... We really need to expand on the Archduchy thing in the HRE, it shouldn't just be a king as while they were as powerful as some kings there was still quite the difference, if it wasn't why would Prussia have gone to such lengths to become a kingdom? (also i want the Archduchy Jülich-kleve-berg)
It all looks great. For the matter if a duke should have a court, I would argue that under certrain conditions, they should have the court feature. For example: if the grandeur of a duke is high enough and the realm he is part of is big enough he should be able to hold court; perhaps he just would need more grandeur than a king to unlock the same features. Another possibility could be, if the duke is closely related to the king and is powerful enough. And lastely, if you are leading a faction as a duke, you shold be able to hold court, just to piss of the king. Yet I also agree, if I can interact with the court of my liege, I could forego some of these scenarios.
I really agree about having all of the court and family related events taking place much more interactively and in a much more detailed manner within the new stage that this royal court offers, though I worry that all of these features might result in players with and without different expansions having such vastly different game experiences that Paradox will have to have multiple teams working on different permutations of gameplay for different configurations of expansions and the base game. It may also lead to a person buying CK3 for the first time effectively playing something completely different from the presentation of it on the internet, in let's play series. and in reviews. I also have a suggestion not related to the court: I really want to see culture and building up of holdings having more of an effect on the map itself. For example, castle holdings can become increasingly urbanised while others can look more like fortresses, or the later levels of dock buildings showing up as proper naval infrastructure, maybe even complete with tiny ships. I would love to see a bit more of a realistic map rather than the current toy like soldiers and standardised holdings, which is interactive as it gets built up and changed and specialised. It would also be great to have infrastructure play a part in events, e.g. building grand castle defences leads to arguments with the architect, or having to pay more money due to construction difficulties, or interactions in the new world class fish markets.
I have no comment except that I absolutly love your analysis of this DD. These vids really give me more insights into the development of the game/dlc compared to when I would read the DD's myself.
It looks great! I wouldn’t mind also seeing the implementation of horse, dog and cat “characters” to go along with the master of horse and the master hounds titles. If tournaments were added and hunts expanded, then the breeding of dogs and horses would be ideal in order to get certain buffs or events unlocked. Some of the mechanics are already in the game, and I would really like to seem them built upon in this expansion. Such game mechanics would also be ideal for the AGOT mod - especially for dragons.
Definitely my favourite CK3 UA-camr! Always super clear, concise, well spoken, to the point, well curated, well produced and is always genuinely great content. Thanks buddy
Amazing! There's only one way to one-up this level of innovation for CKIV and that's simply going the world style of Bannerlord i.e there's the map but then you click on, let's say, a county in your realm and you can choose to visit. You see your ruler being welcomed according to their status and can walk around and interact with the various characters in that county's court etc. That's my ideal CKIV!
Wait, they aren't adding old events to the Royal Court system? That seems like a huge waste of potential. How can they not have weddings or feasts in your court?
Just to clarify: We don't know. I hereby implore them to do it, but it was not mentioned yet (and tbf the Royal Court Expansion as a whole will be getting like 10 or 12 DDs from the looks of it - so there'll be a lot to talk about!)
They seem to be scraping alot of things from CK2 and alot of things that were key in making CK2 To be the best game in CK serie Maybi in 2-3 year CK3 might outshine CK2
I feel like the grandeur system makes a playstyle I really wanted to do in ck2 but found near impossible to pull off, now to be possible: marriage and murder, or in effect, set up ways to ensure that two realms, yours and a neighbors, have the same heir, and will be unified. This expansion also gives me a lot of hope for future expansions, and I agree with OPB, I’m fine with the waiting period if it means we get expansions like this
My biggest fear with this, apart from them not adding feasts, weddings ect..is being a duke or a count and not being able to go to your lieges court. Seeing it work at the lower level is important imo
Great video. But vassals do ask you to take their kids as wards. It has happened to me a few times, always when they had close to 100 opinion of me, and when I was a genius with a lot of learning. It always pay off to have genius courtiers, so you can offer them as tutors to your vassals kids even if they don't ask you, that way you can always put your powerful vassals in your council without suffering penalties
This is great - the devs clearly watch your videos and listen to your thoughts, so thanks for keeping up the pressure for them to keep adding features and expanding the breadth of this DLC. It could truly be a groundbreaking CK franchise expansion.
I disagree with leaving the courts to kings and emperors only. CKIII exists in the era of the feudal courts after all. Limiting them the way they do would fit more if the game was played in the era of Victoria III or Late EUIV with Absolutist Kings. OK, it makes sense to limit some interactions probably to kings and up only, but dukes should still have some semblance of a court at least. Regarding the interconnectivity, eh. We'll see when they bring out more DLCs. Sure, cultures and courts are interacting now, but they're still two things being added in the same single DLC. We'll see how well things still hold up after they release the fourth or fifth DLC. I do hope you're right, but I am a bit more pessimistic in my expectations, considering that the court already feels half finished at best.
One step closer to the perfect game, a cross between CK, Total War, Mount & Blade, and open world rpgs like Skyrim. I want to work my way up from prisoner to emperor, and fight battles as a general.
I'm imagining CK3 played with a VR headset. You play in this sort of court and look down at maps to govern your realm. Probably still 10-15 years away at the level I'm dreaming of, but it's starting to look like the groundwork for such a project is being laid.
The hall looks fantastic! To anyone interested in seeing the real thing, I'd reccomend checking out Westminister Hall, built in the 1090s for king William II of England.
multiple people saying this dlc is massive, is it half the price of the full game massive though, it doesn't even work for tribal rulers so that's a whole government type out
@Heberth R. As I said, I never pay full price. I usually end up waiting at least a year before adopting a new dlc, it usually gets a decent discount by then.
I really like to see the game develop into yet more of a customizable role-playing experience, from that kind of Europa Universalis type of WQ-game. I am ESPECIALLY looking towards cultural modification, like the traditions, and oh boy the hybrid cultures are gonna be so lit. This all just feels so good and large that it feels like it's almost TOO good to be true. I really hope, and I trust that Paradox can pull this off well. They have a big big team working on something big. This is really going to bring back some of the aspects of CK2 that I have missed, but make them even more working and important. I believe this will truly change the game for good, and the game will never be the same. And just think of how rapidly CK-games have developed, and just imagine 30 years in the future, you playing the CK6 and enjoying the fully customizable world and all the hyper-realistic, almost like real-world aspects of it. I can't wait!
Some things I'd like to happen: • Being able to sack someone else's court - and have yours sacked - after a sucessful siege at realm capital and then 'acquiring' new artifacts, that for some time, don't grant Grandeur and even give a hit of monthly prestige, whilst providing some other bonuses, like weapons granting prowess, for example. • Certain artifacts being consired 'Rare' or extremely valuable for certain cultures and/or religions, like the Byzantine Crown, or the Nail of the Cross - making them desirable to acquire at any costs. • Romance, Seduce, Elope, Murder and Fabricate Hook plots with non-intrusive events whitin Court. • If a vassal has the Royal Favour they could risk being very endulged in the Liege's court, rending them alienated about their holdings situation - all awhile forcing them to rely on their spouses ability to be a regent. This could lead to loss of control, higher taxes and levies countribution, and unrest through mismanagement, or just a very sucessful regency, but loss of popular opinion for leaving the realm for your spouse. Traits like Gluttonous, Lazy, Arrogant causing them to be like that. All awhile, making them very easy to handle, as their liege. • Provinces' negative modifiers and the level of Grandeur could implicate in a larger chance for unrest: if the peasents have dificulties to feed themselves and taxes are high, while the court is famous for luxurious feasts, patronages and etc, the popular opinion should decrease, raising chances of rebellion. • Powerful vassals could be upset if a vassal that isn't powerful has the Royal Favour, augmenting discontent in factions, and descreazing their opinion of the Liege and the favoured vassal. • I don't quite know how, but i'd like to be surprised by some courtiers' ulterior motivations. I'd like to see someone getting caught for their actions, or getting away and leaving court unpunished for crimes I did not expected. Like... when Cersei discovered that was Olenna, years after; or Littlefinger's surprise trial, in GoT.
Swedish holidays range from Juni-August, where we're able to take our Paid leave (5 weeks) that we get every year :) I'm pretty sure Paradox usually runs pretty low maintenance between end of june and throughout july? I wouldn't expect much news in July, is what i'm saying anyway
I think a smaller court for Dukes would have been nice, it's a shame that you have to be king to enjoy this feature. Maybe a modder will make it happen!
Sorry, I should have specified: he never held the title of king of England, but I have now learnt that he did call himself king of the Angles and Saxons, and despite only ruling over the west and south he's listed as an English monarch.
I am excited for this and I have no doubt I will be incredibly hyped once we start getting some more screenshots of the actual court, culture and all the mechanics. However knowing that it is likely late Q3 or Q4 makes me kinda bummed, as we will only have the Azure Patch to tie as over between Northern Lords, which we got in mid-March, and the Royal Court towards the end of the year.
Yeah I think this has the potential to be the single best improvement to the Byzantines, I want to be a duke in the Emperor's Court, or even a king with my own court and in the emperor's court. Same thing for the HRE right. Plus for elective monarchies your liege's court could be a great place to try to influence the next election!
I remember when big DLCs like this were the norm across the industry, Vicky 2 was the last one before they went to the then-modern market trend of smaller DLCs. But in those days the team was so much smaller. But when it comes to connectivity, making big expansions isn't the only thing that matters. With Stellaris in particular, but also the tail end of CK2 development, they've done a good job of having broader systems that are unlocked by multiple DLCs that add to them. Also, I have a feeling part of the culture rework is going to wind up in the free update. Maybe not traditions, but the main pillars effectively replace culture groups. Structural stuff like that seems like something where if they didn't add it to the base game, maintaining it would gain an unnecessary level of extra work and it's not really the marketing point of the expansion anyway. "Releasing a DLC that is both trade and the Byzantines" I had the idea that it could be trade and China, with the silk road as the connecting theme. But that level of map expansion is a big deal on its own, so both of these together would probably go beyond even this expanded scope, especially because China would want new government institutions/mechanics, and maybe something for multi-province constructions like the great wall and grand canal, which have never been done well in a Paradox game.
Hopefully I will be able to do a campaign with the theme "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent" Hopefully rolay court will make this feasible
I think they might bring Tribes and Nomads, Merchants and Republics, and Mystics and Societies in different game packs. With the cultural minor DLCs peppered throughout them. And this Royal Court DLC looks so much fun!
I hope they fix the education traits for the personality traits, also I think it would be cool if they made it so you could change your personality traits through extreme measures, like and expensive tutor
Has there been any confirmation that vassal players can interact with their liege's court. It's frustrating that the only way a vassal can regain their de jure land from another vassal is to declare war. You should be able to petition your liege for it.
With regards to dukes and courts, it would be nice if you were a Duke with a certain number of vassals or certain number of duchy level titles you would get a court. Given how some dukes were more powerful/rich or grand than kings, such as the dukes of burgundy. EDIT: grammar
After this DD it makes total sense to me that they aren't expanding this to tribal rulers. Most of the new events seem like things that would be benefits of being settled. It would be nice to have the 3D throne room type space with tribal flavor of course, and in real life of course it wasn't such a sudden transition. But IMO there's already way too much settled flavor in universal events, and right now there's really not enough incentive for player characters to settle. Being able to craft a vibrant court, have minor advisors, etc really seems like a more useful distinction between tribal and settled than feudal contracts or unlocking the tech tree, IMO.
This looks hype as hell. I thought more king/emperor gameplay was exactly what ck3 needed. Also really approve of the new DLC approach. Longer bigger more expensive better integrated DLC please. I would go a step further and require each new DLC to require all the previous, to keep everything 100% integrated moving forward. I'm gonna buy everything anyway and it would keep the experience integrated in the far future when we are looking at our 6th, 7th, 8th big DLC
I strongly agree on the need for Count/Duke tier players to be able to participate in their liege's court. I never start games as a king and i try spend as much time as a vassal as I can so I would be missing out on all this goodness for a large chunk of my games otherwise
I'm really wondering how Sicilian culture will interact with the new culture mechanics. It is (i think) unique in the game in that it doesn't appear at game start, but appears when sicily is created and starts spreading on its own throughout the kingdom of sicily.
I've been having a great time doing content - I hope you've been enjoying it as well!
Also, my main takeaway of this DD is that the new DLC structure allows for a MUCH larger degree of inter connectivity and I love that! What do you think?

When there's a war on, who can afford such luxuries as clothes?.
My dude look great in the Bavarian flag suit
Imagine this, but with the "Animal Kingdoms" thing from CK2.
I agree in that they should move almost all events and happenings into the 3D court room. (even if Paradox don't, I give modders a week)
It would be so fun to roleplay a ruler who just doesn't give a crap about courtly drama and simply doesn't show up to court that often.
Difficult? Sure. Doable? Likely!

It's my favourite youtuber, One Posh Bavarian!

I wholeheartedly agree with your point about experiencing top-to-bottom AND bottom-to-top perspectives of the court. It's a must.
Crazy. Love the work of the devs
Sorry OBP, I was only half paying attention. You got me distracted by that magnificent outfit.
I feel like whether an artifact stays with you should depend on the artifact. A crown for example could be set to always go with the title.
Bavarian you are a König for me! Cheers my brother 🇭🇷❤️🇩🇪
That Bavarian Flag suit is amazing.
Imagine that with this grandeur mechanic, they will next add Dynasty-Pacts. Like an alliance that lasts for longer than a lifetime.
multiple people saying this dlc is massive, is it half the price of the full game massive though, it doesn't even work for tribal rulers so that's a whole government type out
I agree it’s big but like the majority of Paradox DLC I’m really not sure if it’s worth the retail price.
Never pay full price for a dlc. I would wait for a decent discount if I didn’t have the expansion pass (which I got on a discount lol)

Some things I'd like to happen:
• Being able to sack someone else's court - and have yours sacked - after a sucessful siege at realm capital and then 'acquiring' new artifacts, that for some time, don't grant Grandeur and even give a hit of monthly prestige, whilst providing some other bonuses, like weapons granting prowess, for example.
Based on this, I'm pretty sure your Liege can invite you to their royal court since everything will happen in the royal courts (feast, marriage, etc).
That is the most Bavarian suit I have seen in my entire life. 100% commitment
What I really want to come back is viceroys.

I think a smaller court for Dukes would have been nice, it's a shame that you have to be king to enjoy this feature.
Maybe a modder will make it happen!
I agree. Alfred the Great was never king and he had a flourishing court of scholars, engineers and clergymen.
@@kimsakimsa92 He was a King as he proclaimed himself as king of the Saxons and Wessex. So yeah.
@@kimsakimsa92 What? where'd you get that idea from?
Sorry, I should have specified: he never held the title of king of England, but I have now learnt that he did call himself king of the Angles and Saxons, and despite only ruling over the west and south he's listed as an English monarch.
I am excited for this and I have no doubt I will be incredibly hyped once we start getting some more screenshots of the actual court, culture and all the mechanics. However knowing that it is likely late Q3 or Q4 makes me kinda bummed, as we will only have the Azure Patch to tie as over between Northern Lords, which we got in mid-March, and the Royal Court towards the end of the year.
And you pulled off that suit. Respect.
Yeah I think this has the potential to be the single best improvement to the Byzantines, I want to be a duke in the Emperor's Court, or even a king with my own court and in the emperor's court. Same thing for the HRE right. Plus for elective monarchies your liege's court could be a great place to try to influence the next election!
yeah an independent counts or Dukes should have their own court.
I keep thinking my phone is upside down because of the taskbar at the top.

Excited for this
That suit is outstanding!
