    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
Hey, I could really use your help.
If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

I am relieved that I found your channel. Hearing aids don't work anymore, so learning ASL will help me communicate with the rest of the world. I've become acclimated to your style of teaching. Thanks Bill.

      John,
Good luck in your class. If your teacher shows you any signs that are different from mine feel free to mention them to me so I can address the differences on my website notes for that sign. Differences are sometimes regional, evolutional, or situational (related to how casual / formal a sign is done based on the situation).

My dominant hand is left, but I finger-spell with my right hand. Is that an issue?
Longer story of that same thing: I was in girl scouts eons ago and I was the only left-handed girl there. One of the things we learned was the ASL alphabet. They had me learn with my right hand with the other girls. Fast-forward 30 years and for some reason, my left hand doesn't cooperate and it's difficult for me to form the letters, but I sign letters much better with my right. I know that sounds odd, but that's what it is. For actual signs, I use my dominant left hand. Is that confusing to the deaf person if I switch?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +10

It really isn't a big issue. Some people might try to make it out as a big issue -- but it most certainly (in real life) is not.
To skilled signers it will simply be as if you have a slight accent.
However, if someone has decided they don't like you -- then things that are minor and not worth mentioning start becoming targets to mention. So if someone criticizes you on your handedness choices that is an interesting early warning indicator about their personality, their level of (or lack of) depth in the actual Deaf community, their personal need for control, and/or their attitude toward you.

    • @sign-language

Heh... would be fun to check back with him at age 30. When he has had a chance to become fluent and hang out with socially active Deaf adult skilled signers for a while -- ask him to quickly spell a list of random words as fast as he can. Or spell a sentence. Secretly include a few words that end in "TE" or "LE."
Video record him in bright daylight so that your camera will have its shutter at high speed so you can do freeze frames later and see the handshapes clearly.
Chances are some of his "E" letters will be morphed into using two fingers on top of the thumb or even sometimes just one.
However often people will not spell naturally if they are being recorded so you sometimes have to just catch it in the wild (vlogs from skilled signers).
      See: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/fingerspelling/fingerspelling.htm
and scroll down to the "research note" where I mention this concept a bit and do a frame-grab of a two fingered "e" in real life signing.
      ----------------------------------
      Research notes:
While the letter "E" is typically shown in textbooks as the four fingers bent with the fingertips held even with each other and the index, middle, and ring fingertips touching the thumb -- other versions of the letter "E" are also common.
E: (The letter "E") In a promotional video for the 2012 Deaf Studies Today conference Dr. Bryan Eldredge spelled the word "keynote" (as in "keynote" speaker"). At the end of the word "keynote" he is clearly using a version of the letter "E" that rests only the index finger and middle finger on the top surface of the bent thumb. (Source: "Keynote Speakers" video at the 14 second mark. Retrieved 4/12/2012 from ua-cam.com/video/IBPAkkZjepw/v-deo.html which was embedded at www.deafstudies.org/ )
      ----------------------------------
      Also visit:
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/e/e.htm
and scroll down to the part where I state:
"Trick question: What letter is being shown here?"
-- and check out the associated graphic.
      Enjoy!

@@sign-language Oh Definitely his "corrections" clearly stem from what he's taught in school. It's interesting, though, to see him code switch. If I'm reading from a book, he will "correct" me with the SEE signs - which I don't know. I'm working on getting him into Texas School for the Deaf, and then it will be a whole other ball game. I for sure need to up my ASL skills!
