For most of human history a sharp rock was all we had and we made it work, so knowledge and experience will always be the most important factor, but lets face it, some fancy pocket jewellery also makes us all feel a bit special.

Absolutely this. I love buck knives, but a lot of people hate on the 420hc steel. "That's not any good, you need to upgrade to a modern tool steel!" But 420HC is just as good, if not better, than most of the steels people were using from the end of the iron age all the way to the start of the space age, I think it'll be fine. And the handle is comfortable, which means no blisters or cramps when I'm actually using it!

    Good video.
I have said for a long time that no single knife is going to do all the tasks well that you need to perform on a long trek in the backcountry.
For about 8 years I carried a neck knife made from an old saw blade with a 3.5" to 4" blade and stag antler scales. Best trade I ever made, and it did about 80% of all camp chores I needed it to do. Could I build a strong semipermanent shelter with it? No. But I never intended it to, since that was beyond its scope of operation. I carried a tomahawk or a large knife or a machete for those larger tasks.
You need a blade that will do smaller tasks well, and you need a blade that will do larger tasks well. Period.

I love the "big" morakniv Garberg for ease of sharpening, rust resistance, and comfort during most task that I do. 3:12 " .... You! You make he best survival knife!" That raises an interesting question (as some other comments below mention as well) - why a survival knife? Singular. Later in the video you do mention the various limitations of certain knives, but don't elaborate. The knives on your table represent various different ways of meeting camp-related tasks and functions. So, why limit yourself to only one knife? In what scenario would you suddenly find yourself in dire circumstances and be limited to ONE tool only? Who made up this rule? [Note: only the minutest fraction of people might be a crashed jet aircraft pilot who miraculously survived over the Borneo or Amazon jungle with only his uniform, parachute and his ESEE5 knife?] For most of us normal people we CHOOSE to go out into the wild, for any number of reasons. Thus we have the ability to plan ahead and DECIDE what to take, how and why.
Thus, we CAN decide to take the tools that we will require for that particular expedition.
To this end I came up with a little formula to help with this decision-making.
Firstly I divide trips into two main categories; Heavy carry and light carry (for obvious reasons).
    Heavy carry:
I would ALWAYS include a saw! (like a Silky Bigboy). [Note: I discount carrying an axe capable of doing heavy work as too heavy and bulky, as well as too limited in application.]
Large knife: some tasks are easier and safer to do with a large blade. It is what it is. For this I have my Cold Steel Trail Master (San Mai III version).
Belt knife: This is a medium size knife fit for bushcrafting tasks, carving, slicing, cutting, etc, and worn on a belt at all times. Here I would opt for the Victorinox Venture Pro (with kit).
Multi-tool knife: [Note: as I would be mainly in the wild I would probably not need a full size pliers, so a Leatherman style tool is unnecessary.] Here my choice is the Victorinox Hercules, which I would carry on a lanyard and dangling inside my trouser pocket. This versatile tool would satisfy all those other camp related tasks, and also food prep and some woodworking tasks, eh making holes, and small items. The pliers it has is perfectly adequate for making snares, traps, etc.
    Light carry
I would still have a saw (Silky Gomboy, or if hiking a Pocketboy). This is not-negotiable.
Belt knife: for light carry, this would be the Cold Steel SRK (in CPM3V, and sabre grind, uncoated). This is after all the signature Survival Knife!
Multi-tool knife: My carry companion of 30 years would still always be with me: Victorinox Swiss Champ.
I'd be interested in your comments about my selections.

  • @IdahoSewing
    @IdahoSewing 7 місяців тому

I've spent the last 28 years studying the question. I know a lot more about knives and survival than when I started. We'll never find a perfect knife, and some will always apply better than others to a given person/task/environment/set-of-surprises. The surprises are what put survival front and center.
My most commonly-used blade is a QSP Parrot linerlocking folder, with a full-v-ground drop point D-2 blade. I still have my roadkill Leatherman Original dated 08/93, and am carrying a 5-inch drop-point full-tang that I made in 2012. It is a full-V grind in 154CM steel with fiberglass laminate handles. During the Obama years (.22 ammo drought), I used it for emptying traps, and found that it was a very poor penetrator in tissue, so ground a swedge near the point. Never used it for the task since, so I don't know if it helps.
Focus on tool systems, rather than a single do-all tool. Remember that your cutting edge is the most fragile part of the knife. Especially on glass or stone blades. Make your edge as thin as you can, without rolling or chipping in normal use. Keep your cutters sharp, and your tinder dry. Always carry them in the same place.

None of the above, if it is pure survival. Colonel Nick Rowe, Medal of Honor recipient and founder of Army SERE, said in a 1986 interview “We’ve got a little SERE knife, a folder, that has a short blade that is good for draw cutting. You could stab with it if you had to, but that’s not its main purpose. It’s made out of a slightly softer steel. I keep mine sharpened on a river rock I picked up one time. The knife has a rubber handle, so it won’t slip in your hand if it gets wet or bloody. These are all small things, but in a survival situation, they’re really important.” I’ve always wondered what knife he was talking about. We were given the Camillus “US” knife when I went through SERE.

I agree with your assessment of the “perfect” knife. The knife has to be one that you know how to use and care for. I have a Camillus pilot survival knife that I received in 1960 from my uncle who was in the Navy. It’s been on many camping trips and patrols in Cambodia in 1971. It got my dad safely home from a storm when a shear pin broke on his boat. He used the saw back to file down an oversized spare pin. I continue to use the knife to this day. Is it perfect? No… but I like it and I’m familiar with it. Great video sir!!

I carry pocket knives exclusively. I can get feathersticks with them, I can strike a ferro rod with them, skin game with them, cut cordage, you get the idea. If my pocket knife can't handle the job, chances are a machete or hatchet will do the job better than any fixed blade survival or bushcraft knife. I've got several fixed blade knives that people have given me over the years and I've never found a situation where they were the best tool for a job. Too big for fine work and too small for heavy use. I carry a pocket knife all the time for utility that will handle most whittling or shaving. I use an Opinel for eating with at home, and it will handle any cooking jobs I need around the campfire. I use a machete for clearing brush and light chopping fire wood. Anything bigger and I go with a camp axe. I'm not felling redwoods so those pretty much handle any job I need handled.

I've found that I can't do everything I want with just 1 or 2 knives. So, I carry 4. A big knife, a medium knife, a 3-blade pocketknife and 1 more just because it's in my multitool. Is that overkill? If you're camping, yeah you don't need all that, 1 should be enough. Bushcraft, pick 2 and make them work. Survival, I want the knife that will work the best for the job. I don't want to try to dig out a splinter with a Ka-Bar. I don't want to try to clear a spot to sleep with a lock blade. So yes, like he said, it's up to you to figure out what's best for you.

You know,... A knife is like a good Women (both you have chosen). When new,... It is sharp, feels good in the hand, built of the best materials ever, serves you and ALL above and beyond, achieves what is needed and takes care of whatever arises... But after time passes when it is a little "duller", it has lost "some feel or appeal" because of all "the new stuff" that is out, it is taken for granted and set aside. It is still built to resist, serve, and protect above all, still ready to assist/serve at anytime and in anyplace, is still willing and able to achieve what needs to be done and take care of anything that arises,... I say this because my Dad gave me a $12 fixed blade knife (USMC copy) when I was 15. I picked that knife up not long ago and realized the stress and abuse I put it through. I replaced the sheath, gently file the spine back, gave it an edge like no other (literally shave a hair in half), doctored it and took care of it. Sometimes we just sit back, watch, look, and give attention to the things that we chose. With a little TLC, that one knife will still be THE BEST ONE IN THE DRAWER!, I'm now 65 and out of my 125+ knife collection that is the one I'm reaching for and taking with me, it and my Sweet Woman are tried, true, and proven! I love them both! I really enjoyed this and your prospective!

My EDC knife is a Gerber FAST06 that sells for less than $65, and I keep it razor-sharp. My other knife is a venerable Ka-Bar, but with a synthetic grip. Also razor-sharp! People always say a survival knife has to be a full tang that has the capability of being hammered through a cinder block, but at least from what I’ve found having an exposed full tang during subzero conditions is not ideal. The metal can stick to your gloves or worse your bare skin. Rat tails and half tangs are adequate enough to do most jobs you would need a knife to do. As someone who lives in a place that snows for 6 months of the year a full tang knife has little appeal to me

It's not just about the knife. It's about the system you put around the knife. If there's not a ferro rod, certain amount of cordage, heavy duty needle, duct tape, electrical tape, fresnel lens, sharpener & fishing hook all contained or attached to the sheath I'm not taking it with me. Believe it or not Survivorman came up with a system made by Camillus which I bought for $50 years ago. It's bulletproof. 2) The all-around best survival knife is the British MOD sold by Night Galaxy ( Quarter inch steel, coated blade, rugged shape, sensible length, around $100 ). If you consider the Kukri a knife, maybe it is the best. If cost and weight are not a concern, the SXB Skullcrusher is the cat's pajamas.

Scandi is a unitasker, simple as that. Can you skin game with it? Sure.....as easily and cleanly as a saber or flat grind can do necessary wood tasks for survival? Not even close. As far as I'm concerned, scandi's are for city slickers and fad followers playing at camp for a night. Go back and tell Kephart he should have a scandi grind and he'd laugh at you.
