$25 vs one minute with a file. I also like the palm swell better than the finger groove personally, Both sheaths are adequate but the Bushcraft is superior. Regardless whether you want a companion for $10 the HD for $20 0r the Bushcraft for $45 they are all a great value.

Spend 50 cents on a bottle of vinegar and add a black patina to the knife, you'll save a lot of money that way.

I understand that you are presenting the knives as sold by the factory, which is what most people would do, but I think it's important to mention that for those who want to save money that it's easy to flatten the top or spine and achieve the sharp, 90 degree angle needed to make sparks with a ferro rod. Also looking at it from both points of view (The company and the buyers) I would include the Mora HighQ Robust as an alternative to the higher priced Companion Heavy Duty or the "Bushcraft" models. My personal wish, if I can give feedback, would be for Mora to have another HD (3.2mm) blade in stainless. Maybe they could make the HighQ in a stainless version. While the knives designed for bushcraft would probably be better, they are higher priced and so the idea of buying a few diminishes. For many people, $40-$50 represents their chosen main go to blade. I love their knives, but I have to consider price, but $15 or less is less of a concern. Just my thoughts. Good job on the video, I'll be one of your viewers from now on.

The companion can be had on ebay for $17 with free shipping. 2mins with a file gives the flat sharp spine for striking. so is the black worth the extra money, I don't think so.

I just picked up the bushcraft. I have had the companion for about a year and a half and I love it. I took my grinder out and put a 90 on the companion. I honestly beat the hell out of it and it is holding strong. My experience made me invest further into Morakniv! You won't go wrong with either.

I actually own the bushcraft survival black best knife I ever bought, for the price I was expecting just a typical cheap knife but the moment I pulled it out of the packaging and it's been my work knife for almost 10 years now. I've even used it to split small logs (under 4 inches) with little effort. even though it's not full tang it's well made enough to survive battoning, heck I've only ever seen one break and that was done on purpose with some guy testing it to destruction and he had to resort to hammering it against a rock

    • @crwydryny
      @crwydryny 4 роки тому

the both have a push tang, about 1/2 the length of the grip, the hilt itself is plastic with a rubber wrap at least that's the case with my bushcraft, a former coworker used to use a companion and from what I could tell the construction was pretty much the same but with a slightly thinner blade.
that said they are constructed well and I've used my mora bushcraft to split logs up to 4 inches in diameter with a little battoning. the things are practically indestructable

Why does the Bushcraft Black have such a deeper sheath? Is it simply because of the shape of the handle (the finger grip thingy closest to the blade)? I would like to add my 2 cents on the comparison between the two: the HD has a much slimmer profile in its sheath than does the BB. This was another subtle consideration for me, as I prefer something that takes up as little space in my pack as possible (as well as being such a cheap bastard). Good stuff thanks for sharing.
    Cheers from Montreal QC

If you can't figure out how to grind your Companion HD to get a 90 degree spine, I assume you send your knives out to someone else for sharpening?
Anyone who can sharpen the blade of a knife can certainly grind the spine to get a good edge for fire striking. As so many others have pointed out already, it's pretty ridiculous to say the Bushcraft is worth an extra $25 primarily because it's got a 90 degree spine.

90° spines are not worth the punishment on the thumbs, I spend way more time using my knife to carve and whittle than the two seconds of fire steel striking. I used to punish myself thinking "well its not a Bushcraft knife without a sharp spine" then one day I was like "screw this I'm done"😅 Needless to say I dont need the spine and actually remove them, my Garberg was like having a freaking razorblade against my thumb when carving. The fire steel sharp spine obsession is odd to me, I just dont see the benefit's, to each his own though right.

You can keep the spine near the handle at 90° and the rest of the blade rounded. This way you have a sharp spine for the ferro rod, yet a rounded spine for thumb comfort. The best of both.

A lot of people put down the black because it costs more and the hd is all you need. Most of us have more than one knife because we like using different knives. It's a little hypocritical to say you only need the hd and own more than one knife. Btw, i have and like both these knives and the squared off spine on the black is much harder than the hd, it holds that sharp 90* edge much, much longer than the hd or other moras.

Hey Clint...your welcome to your opinion but I don't think that is the case here at all. The Black had a longer tang and wider blade which it more steel which cost more to produce, plus a anti-corrosion plating....not to mention a sharp spine. So to me this is definitely worth $25, Mora has options for everyone so if those things are not important to you then you maybe the Companion is the way to go for some people. All that being said $50 is not a lot of money for a high quality carbon steel blade.....thx for your comment Clint and thx for watching

To some of the commenting viewers: I would never criticize people for not being aware of the advantage and uses for a 90 degree spine and knowing how to make the appropriate mods. Most of us buy things we need or want and use them as they are. The regular, everyday car buyer doesn't think to buy a new car and then spend more money to modify it. How many of us can even perform such modifications? Not everyone is a "Mr. Fix It". Not everyone is aware of the hacks, mods or remedies that others are familiar with. Often the difference between a novice and a person who is "into it" and more experienced.
Sometimes, I think people become obsessed or fixated on certain aspects like batoning, specific steels or even flat ground spines.

Say Heah again, Yeah, I got the Garberg, and the Kansbol, and ((2) Eldis's (gteen and black to color match) I use them as my neck knives. I teamed my Kansbol with my Fox Parang Bushcraft Knife sort of piggyback, I permanently attached the sheath tp my Fox Parang Bushcraft Knife with the large survival tin on the sheath and the Kansbol right on the side. My Garberg I team it with my H. I. Khukuri or other larger knives. You did good for being a spokesman for Mora. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

    • @topfueljunkie100
      @topfueljunkie100 5 років тому

I like the combos you mentioned! These were actually four of the exact knives I was considering purchasing myself. Kinda want to get an Eldris too as it seems like a pretty cool little knife though I do wonder how much utility I'd get out of it..... I might be surprised though once I start using it.
I really like the Fox Parang and have been wanting a HI Kukri as well.
Now the two Moras you mentioned, I own neither though I own a number of other Moras (Companions, Clippers, etc) and was wondering how these compare.
For instance, I have the Bushcraft Forest model which has the exact same handle as the Bushcraft black in this video but it has a blade that appears to be nearly identical to the Kansbol you have.
I was wondering, how do you like the Kansbol so far and what things about the blade specifically do you like and dislike?
As for the Garberg, well, that knife seems to me to be sort of the new Bushcraft Black in that it has a more robust blade and is slotted to be their premier bushcraft blade. However, the Garberg, like the Kansbol, has that new handle which is obviously completely different than the handle on the Companions or the Bushcraft Black or Bushcraft Forest I have.
I just LOVE the handle on the Bushcraft Forest/Black! It's grippy, has good proportions, and it has enough of a finger guard and that finger groove to make me feel safer than the Companion handle makes me feel.
I've heard that the new handle on the Garberg and Kansbol only has a rubber insert in the center whereas the rest of the handle, namely the outside gripping surface, is all hard plastic which really doesn't sound good to me. Sounds like it'd be easy for your hand to slide all around on it if that's the case. So, could you tell me what you think of the handles on those two models since you have used them?
I've never hand them in hand myself but it's the one thing that disappointed me over the handle on the Bushcraft Black and Bushcraft Forest since I loved that handle so much!

  • @davebward

I own both bushcraft models and some regular moras, and I have to say I have never gotten the incredible fascination with a 90° spine. it's at an almost fanatical level. the striker works perfectly and in most cases is attached to the rod lanyard hole for removal and replacing. I use the spine on my bushcraft sometimes just because but my other moras or esees were designed for actual knife mechanics. do close in work for 10 mins with a sharp spine and you'll begin to realize that the rather gimmicky ability to throw sparks from it diminishes pretty quickly. plus I usually also carry a lighter. honestly, if somehow someway, I lost my striker and my lighter then I'd just use the blade edge if it was that much of an emergency. it's not going to damage it to the point that I can't use it just fine till I get back home and put the edge back. in terms of processing shavings, that's a better argument but imo still doesn't override the discomfort of carving for long durations with a sharp spine. and carving is really the niche of scandi grind knives anyway basically. just my 3 cents is all.

Agreed ... actually about 30$ difference because you can find the companion and or the HQ Robust for 14$ and file the spine for 60 seconds if need be. The whole firesteel thing is getting played by these companies to squeeze every ounce they can out of the survival hype. Yes is I don't have a lighter I can use a firerod if I dont have a rod I can make a bowdrill if I don't have a knife then I really screwed up and probably deserve to freeze LOL. Mora has no problem explaining their price points they just ignore it and know the super fans will pay.....plus Dave from wilderness outfitters can sale an igloo to an Eskimo so Mora has a great spokesman LOL I love that guy;) And I really want that Mora full tang and will pay 75$ for it cause it is AWESOMER!!!!!

+Airik1111 lots of people knock on Canterbury as a sellout. why wouldn't he market himself! I think he has great knowledge and he puts it out there for free on UA-cam. I appreciate that tremendously. and I will admit, even though I just am in love with my esee 6 as a great all around, there is always one of my dozen or so moras that goes with me off trail. they are light, effective and cheap. win, win ,win. and I'll be the first to admit that even though the garberg won't exceed the performance of a high Q robust or Companion HD by enough to warrant the incredible price difference, I'm right in line behind you for one :)

Yes it is a rather oversold feature that is remedied easily with a striker that is already attached to most rods. Everyone talks about it all the time but it really doesn't do much.

I have both of these knives. Both tangs are about the same length at 3/4 into the handle. However, x-ray reveals that the tang on the Bushcraft Black is considerably larger.

If I'm gonna be using a bush knife to craft or to carve then companion hd blade is more comfortable and better suited for fine work...handle better for carving as well... I use a lighter to start a fire or I can make sparks with my machete... Sharp spine is very uncomfortable to work with... If I really wanted one I can file companion one ...overall and price wise companion a better knife ...bushcraft blade too bulky,

I have a HD, why anyone would spend $25 extra for a 90* spine is beyond me. Literally 30 seconds with a file, and you can put a 90* spine on a HD... or 2 seconds on a belt grinder... is that worth $25 extra? I could buy 2 HDs for that price and never wear them both out

All the peeps on here bitching about price are just annoying. This company brought you a good knife at a phenomenal price and when they actually deliver a better version you don't expect them to charge accordingly. Wow. They are a business, what do you expect. And if you can't afford to shell out an extra 20 than you are just a cheap shit all around. The kind of customers that as a business owner are avoided like the Black Plague.

I definitely would go with the companion/companion HD, the price difference is ridiculous just for the 90' spine, when all u have to do is run a file across the companion spine and it quickly becomes 90' also. I own 2 companions and the 1st thing I did was filed the spine and patina'ed the blades, and there you have got just as good as the bushcraft for about $20-$25 versus $60.

I have been very happy with my HD. I can't justify the insane prices for the Black in Canada - total rip off considering how good the HD is, at less than half the price. I prefer the HD handle as well. To each their own I guess.

    Bushcraft for 50$?? Just get BK2 for 77$, BK7 for 85$ or even BK10 for 79$.
For 35$ difference (price of Becker BK7 - price Mora Bushcraft) - I think it is worth.

$25 dollars extra for a 90 degree spine when 10 minutes with a file will do the same for the Companion HD!! The Bushcraft is WAY overpriced compared to the Companion HD.

    • @crwydryny

personally I use a bushcraft been my work knife for nearly 10 years now, one former co worker used to have a companion, which I found too light for me and the balance was too handle heavy for my liking (the bushcraft is balanced right on the index finger) making it more nimble for carving yet strong enough to use for splitting logs

You can't really call yourself a bush-crafter if you can't take 10-minutes to grind or file down an inch of the spine on your Companion to give it the 90-degree edge you need to spark up your fero rod. Save $25, buy a bush-hat or something.

If you want a bushcraft knife, that cuts better, has a much better handle, don't waste your money on the Black.Black is the only Mora I have regreted buying.Black's cutting angle, makes the knife the worst slicer you would ever have. Also it's handle gave me blisters after long use, while I never had that problem with the Heavy duty. Heavy duty's handle,is also more stable for feathersticking.Companion Heavy Duty is the BEST Mora knife for Bushcraft! BEST budget bushcraft knife out there. If you want to spend more, choose the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110, carbon steel (similar to 5160 steel).JUST don't do the same mistake I did.
