    How sad! She treats this craft and artist with such disrespect! She doesn't even know his last name! As a gallery co-founder, I can't imagine trying to advocate for an artist's work and not know their last name! This is a joke!

    What gets me is she speaks as if she's the "expert" in this traditional craft. It's very disrespectful to say that she or anyone is helping them to produce more "evolved" art. This comes from a beautiful deep tradition and the respect for that needs to be shown better. Her words should reflect that respect. You cannot "evolve" their art. You may give it a style that is more reflective of where you come from but that doesn't mean it's more "evolved". That's like saying you've made it "better" or that it was flawed before you "fixed it". Very disrespectful.

      +Mylene V. Williams we can always find ways to be outraged, and cultural awareness is not something that is learned overnight. I prefer to extend grace to others in hope that they'll extend the same to me.

      Hi Fresh Princess. This is all I am saying. Give honor to the ancestors or culture where this hailed from. That's usually all that is required. Because when another culture opens up their traditions to people who aren't of that particular culture it is in the hopes and dreams that as they pass this knowledge along that their heritage will further live on. The only particular thing I stressed is in order to show proper respect your language, everyone's language should reflect honor to them. No outrage. Just deeper observations.

    I agree with Mylene and Zully. I do not think this so much reflects badly on you, Corinne, but it is more a critique of Tess and her set-up. We are just trying to help you see this perspective. I have worked a lot with indigenous artwork. I have shown this video in several presentations as an example of the disrespectful third parties who come in and take advantage of indigenous artists and exploit their work for profit. As Zully said, in any other fine arts context enough respect would be given to artists as individuals in order to at least know and show their names or hear their own artist's statements about their work. She speaks as an authoritative figure on the art and seems to pat her company on the back for helping bring his traditional work into modern times based on what they wish to see or feel will sell better. At the time of recording, you could have had him speak or had an interpreter if that was the issue (Just some advice if you ever wish to record a similar video). I have also always wondered, did you ask what percentage of the profit would go to him? Often times it is very low. This critique is meant to help you learn. This is something you can change or do better with the next time you do similar videos. You might not have known there was an issue had no one ever said anything but now you do.

      You assume that I agree with her? I do not. You also assume that I don’t see her insensitivity toward the artist. I do. I repeatedly saw this mentality throughout Mexico. My place in this world is show experiences, capture moments and this is a telling one, but that was not the story that I was telling. I wanted to highlight my personal experience in Mexico. As you can see, the other videos from that trip all highlighted local people who were excellent at their craft, from hospitality to cheese making, taco experts to chocolate makers. We all have so much to teach others so thank you for adding your perspective to the conversation. It’s rare to come across western expats who do not have this prejudice and I’m glad it is being discussed here. I am saddened by not doing my part to highlight the inequity but that was not the message I was after, I hope that my videos show my true love for place and culture. I’m glad you’re using it as an example of exploitation of indigenous artists. FYI: when using another artists work in presentations, it’s lawful to get their permission first. You’ve just undermined my work and copyright laws by not doing so. So you see, even with the best of intentions, we focus on our own gain at the expense of others. So going forward, please ask permission to use another artists work and please keep being a voice for justice. I’ll do better next time and make the correction where it needs to be made, if not on video, the immediately after. Thank you.

      I "assumed" you agreed with her by purchasing one of the pieces and therefore contributing to the exploitation. You could have reached out to him afterward and commissioned him so he could create a piece for you while retaining the profit, but what's done is done.
      The presentations were for educational purposes within schools, were cited, and so fall into fair use. Section 107 and 110 of the US Copyright Act allows for uses of copyrighted works without the copyright owner’s permission “for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research”. "Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 [17 USCS Sect. 106], the following are not infringements of copyright: (1) performance or display of a work by instructors or pupils in the course of face-to-face teaching activities of a nonprofit educational institution, in a classroom or similar place devoted to instruction. (B) the performance or display is directly related and of material assistance to the teaching content of the transmission; and (C) the transmission is made primarily for-
      (i) reception in classrooms or similar places normally devoted to instruction."
      And according to UA-cam's Terms of Service Paragraph 6.C., "You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service." And I did not modify the work in any way or use it for commercial purposes while embedding the screen into my presentation.
      It was not for personal gain, it was to educate others on the exploitation of my people. But I will ask you for permission should I decide to use it again.

      Assuming is never in ones best interest now is it.

      Yes, her actions are insensitive in the instances you mentioned above. However, she is HOSTING the artist in the store to promote not just his art but him as a person. Tess is not the owner, she is an hourly employee. The owner arranged for the artists to work in the shop that displays there work. You make many assumptions the primary one was that these people are being exploited. So the hourly employee didn’t know Louise’s last name, but you do NOT know what he was paid for his work. Until you have all of the story you’re simply making a knee jerk assumption that the exchange is not a fair one.

    • @Thefreshp
      @Thefreshp  6 років тому

      If you really cared about fixing this issue, you’re call the store owner and get the facts. You could also share your concerns. I was traveling through Mexico with a camera highlighting the future and food of the region, so taking your ire out on me misses the point entirely.
