As an Austrian I can tell, that neutrality is a very very sincere issue for us Austrians. All polls say 80-90% want it and 60% say it would be fundamental part of Austrian identity. That's my point of view, too. I am just ashamed how Austrian politicians are acting on the international stage. Warmongers wherever you look - not the people, but the politicians!!
Kudos to Pascal for maintaining his composure and diplomatic tact in the face of his guest's inherent contradiction when it came to his views on China.
As a British citizen living in Central Europe, it is plainly obvious to me that a war against Russia in any form benefits no one except the Anglo-American deal. I urge anyone to read: 'Ukraine: Zbig's Grand Chessboard & How The West Was Checkmated' by Nataylie Baldwin & Kermit Heartstrong, which exposes the book by Zbigniew Brzezinski (The Grand Chessboard), who was once Secretary of State and published his account in 1997 as to how he and the U.S. 'Neo-Cons' hoped to break up the Russian Federation beginning with a war in Ukraine. The conflict with Georgia and Russia twenty years earlier was clearly a dress rehearsal for the powers that be. The shooting down of the Malaysian airliner is also shown as very questionable as to who was responsible. The great raft of lies that went on to goad and frighten Europe into war is laid out in black and white. The compliance of western mainstream media and Brussels will come as a shock to those who have swallowed it.
Thanks Pascal and Heinrich. Neoliberal capitalism plays a part in this. Sanctions are a part of the hegemony the US holds over the globe... the austerity of the IMF, debt and proactive Sanctions on the one hand, and the military industrial complex and NATO on the other.
29:27 i loved the whole thing but totally disagree with the guest and agree with Pascal that the Chinese will not turn on Russia because after Russia China is next on US chopping block!!
You see, there is Russia and there is Russia. At the moment for the PRC Russia is enormous rueckenschutz that allows for the China to concentrate all their efforts on the southern coasts. The very minute when Russia's leadership would make an attempt to buy some mercy for themselves, their capitals and their families by the way of submission, even in disguise, that Russia at once would become mortal danger for PRC. In that case it would be only logical for PRC to try and move its borders as farther north and north west as possible for they would want nice big buffer zones as well.
Last year, the EU approved 12 sanction packages against Russia and the Russian economy grew 3%. Meanwhile, the German economy is in "tatters". The EU sanctioned itself.
EU shreds itself first not keeping borders safe and closed well now destroying own agricultural market lettings in foreign production of shitty standards sanctioning Russia is irrelevant breaking own rules is European disaster
Austria should have been mad when given "moon rocks" that were VERY EARTHLY, PETRIFIED WOOD. Maybe you all wouldn't be facing this crisis of navigating your neutrality. You men of good conscience and character stay UP, tho. ❤ Ur work.
An interesting and informative discussion over all. But I do feel like your guest has some degree of anti-China bias because most of his observations about China were based on theories rather than observable reality.
As the Brics favoring nations are attracted to membership, the people exercising their movement toward Brics must reflect a genuine benefit in the cultural value of an altered economic system. This would bring about a concomitant shift toward a sort of optimism that our modern world is wary of adopting - that greed and suspicion in everyday dealings have, in its place, more trust and a common cause in shifting all of our efforts to fight climate change and a willingness to engage in hard work over comfort, at least for a foreseeable future. Honesty over criminality is not pollyanna.
Honestly is hard to find in geopolitics. as many countries on both sides of the political divide are unreliable n will jump ship once they sense which side is winning. For the Brics alliance, India is the most unreliable partner
@@yaoliang1580 Western system cannot survive because ordinary western people despise it. The western ruling class has become deeply corrupt and is intent on destroying the democratic sytems that built western prosperity in the first place. No system can prevail without popular consent.
Tolstoi says in 'War and Peace' that it's historical forces which drive an individual towards opportunities in the time and place presented to them. Taken in its aggregate we have points in history favoring a certain type of person and disarray broadly such as mass disinformation - imagine the churning whitewater of human understanding nowadays. Disinformation is a form of warfare. We've actually been at arms for some time now but this will pass at a critical point as it did for all wars. If we make it through this, clarity of purpose will dawn.
I have great respect for Heinrich Wohlmeyer's views in general as presented during this interview, but I strongly disagree with some of his comments near the end of this interview. He stated that China is looking for an opportunity to "stab Russia in the back" and to take the Amur region from Russia and incorporate it into China. I find this completely incorrect. He also stated that the Chinese investments into Africa are essentially a "debt-trap" and a way of controlling Africa. The "debt-trap" fear has been debunked by multiple analysts as unfounded fears that are not supported by actual Chinese behavior in the region with respect to the financing of the projects. Ultimately, these comments from Prof. Wohlmeyer seem to indicate that while he is quite reasonable with respect to Russia, that he has at least some level of Sinophobia.
early on the guest used the term "media offensive". very accurate use of words I would say. something that is usually not fully appreciated and broken down IMO. without breaking this down and isolating the various moving parts, we are all just another moving part. if the back of the cereal box could talk to, make friends with and condition the consumer, what would it say? it would probably say "hey kid, this is democracy,. Let's get the bad guy so he can't keep us apart".
I don't agree with some of his China related comments. For example, when have western countries ever written off debts in Africa? The have not. The people simple inherit them. China does repossess some assets but both them and Russia have also written off a very large amount of debt to Africa.

If Austria had not cooperated with the sanctions against Russia, then the US and its more militaristic allies would have placed sanctions on Austria. It's very difficult for a nation to remain truly neutral in a World that is moving from unipolar to multipolar. Turkiye seems to be doing a dance where they seem to be siding with the US at times and with Russia at other times. Rather than being neutral and unaligned, they seem to be trying to be partially aligned with both sides.
Many countries are doing the same as they try to gain benefits from both sides. They cannot rely on the US alone as the American empire is no longer what it once was n showing signs of serious decline
Turkey made a determined effort in 2022 to host negotiations and restore peace between Russia and Ukraine. Austria and Switzerland were silent at that critical time. More recently Switzerland hosted a bogus peace conference in which Russia was not invited.
No wonder “populism” has become despicable. I never thought about it being connected to the US failure in Viet Nam. Mustn’t let the little people get big ideas!

Concerning the relationship between China and Russia, it is only rational to conceive that both countries are large enough for development to prosperity and affluence. The most abominable stupidity is to start any fight for territorial gains. If Germany and France have rationally given up the fight for Alsace and Lorraine, why can't the Chinese learn from the Germans. The great future for Russia, China and the global south is to defeat US hegemony and endless war-mongering.
But Investments cannot take place, when companies evade Taxes. That's literally the opposite of "helping maintaining infrastructures" needed for efficient/cheap transport and/or subsidies for feasible new ideas. While USA is overvalueing it's own ideas like "Uber" or "Lyft", which are badly organized Taxi companies.

Very wise words, yes we currently participate in Economic warfare of AngloSaxons against Russian Federation, lets call it what it is 😮😮

I agree, I find that the white European mindset is too deeply embedded in the memory of wars within Europe thousands of years.
I agree, wondering why he has this view towards the future.
I agree he seems to have a strong anti-China bias.

It is way too obvious and both country's actions prove it. Only the blind will miss that. I guess his knowledge there is lacking.
Thank you gentlemen for a most enlightening discussion. It’s reassuring that there are learned and like minded people who reflect my views so well.

And logic. Why would China go against Russia? If Russia falls China will be next and they know it.
