In today's video I'm sharing my autumn morning routines. We have been preparing for autumn by putting away my summer clothes and decluttering those I didn't even touch, and making autumn inspired meals and fermentations. For me sustainable living is always about valuing what you own, introducing minimalist ideals by keeping our space free of unwanted items and lowering our waste wherever possible. Zero waste living is something I strive for. Meal prepping for autumn, learning new skills and minimising wherever I can. I hope you enjoy this calm cooking video!

If you want tarter apples, get Granny Smith apples.

sadly they're nowhere near as tart as cooking apples.

@@rosemarysykes6178 I think rather than "cooking apples" I'd look at farmers markets for crabapples, they might be closer.

As someone who lives somewhere that gets really cold during the winter, I can attest that your skin can get a lot dryer in winter. It's because cold air holds a lot less moisture than warm air, and indoor heating will make it even drier. It's really important to take care of your skin during the cold winter months. People may think it's trivial, but it's not. If you don't make sure to keep your skin well moisturized, it will get very rough and flaky and can literally split open, which is very painful and makes it prone to infection. This tends to happen wherever the skin stretches or is stressed a lot; around your fingernails and toenails, on the pads of your fingertips and across your knuckles, the heels of your feet and your lips. So make sure to use plenty of moisturizer and lip balm, because getting split knuckles just from grasping something or a split lip just from smiling is not fun.

Speaking of chalk… this high school sewing teacher remembers the old days of chalk and blackboards. Oh my, that just killed my hands!!!!!! I’m so happy that chalk is a thing of the past for me. I, too, am a creature of habit who thrives on morning routine. It’s report card season right now so my mornings are filled with marking. This really throws my morning routine off at home as I am spending my early morning hours in my classroom. It’s pretty fun and rewarding to mark the cool projects that my students have spent so much time and energy making. The darkness is real here in the wilderness of northern 🇨🇦, I find that mornings are the best time for my personal energy levels and mental clarity, but it is surprising how much the shorter days are impacting this. Thanks for the great video, Immy. I haven’t yet delved into the world of sourdough baking; I really enjoy seeing what you’re up to in the kitchen at this time of the year. I’m frequently pumping out bagels in my kitchen so I’m excited to see any new bagel baking adventures from you. How ‘bout some dumplings?? (Just asking for a friend… haha!!) Ⓜary💕🍁

Granny smith apples are generally a good choice for cooking apple - those or McIntosh/Golden Delicious for baking.

Colorado Winter: Try aquaphor for your lips and nailbeds. I would put it on my face when I got dryness between my cheeks and eyes and definitely on my nose if I had a cold. I put chapstick inside my nostrils to keep myself from getting nosebleeds by the end of winter. And lowering the shower temp and not exfoliating your body too crazy also helps, but that's also good for the environment so I'm sure you already do that lol. I usually exfoliated really well once a week. If I shaved, I'd exfoliate right before and the day or two following.
Colorado Summer: Walmart or Target 2 for 1 sunscreens spf 50 when they go on sale, stock up! and bonus if you get the spray cans so you can get your shoulders and back for when you're working in the garden or wearing sleeveless tops in the summer. Summer I noticed I didn't have to moisturize as much because sunscreen sort of vacuum seals the moisture into your skin lol. SPF sticks are good for hairline, hair part, ears, and backs of your hands, for driving and for cycling. I wish gloves would come back in style because hands like Colorado could really use some fashionable protection that doesn't goop up your phone

In the realm of cooking apples in the U.S., granny smith (the green skin ones) were always my favorite one's to cook (or bake) with because they start out really sour and sweeten as they're cooked. I'm curious what the variety you might have used in the U.K. was? I'm in France now and exploring their cooking apple varieties! But if you haven't used the granny smiths for cooking/baking, I would highly recommend!

You consider a diffuser attachment for your hairdryer. Indirect heat isn’t really damaging, and you can maintain your curls (if you want)

As someone who is getting back into bouldering after a looooong break (Pandemic + health issues), I sympathize for you hands. I have to make sure to treat my cuticles regularly to avoid skin cracking - almond oil is really good for that.
If you haven't tried it yet, I would encourage you to experiment with replacing white flour in your sourdough loaves with bread flour! I used to make all my baked goods with all purpose flour, but after switching I don't think I'll ever go back. The extra protein does remarkable things for the structure of the bread.

I am sure you feel, as I do, that there are not enough hours in the day! But I'm still always really happy to go to bed at night. I want to undertake sour dough, but I've got to clear off a few other big projects first, because I do want to approach it methodically, and give it my full attention while I learn the ropes. I thought you gave a very helpful description of how to know if it's at its peak.

Hi, thank you for another cosy autumn video ❤ just some thoughts/tips I was thinking of... Especially during winter times it helps me to use, if not cold than at least Luke warm water for my skin. It is not necessary to shower just with cold water but rather to cool down the skin a bit after hot shower for the moisture not to evaporate. I find my skin is not so tensed this way :)
As for sourdough bread I've been adviced to try slow fridge fermentation. It helps the taste to be milder and somehow different. More tastier for me and it actually takes less effort. Just make the dough, maybe let it sit for and hour or so on the countertop and than straight to the fridge for up to even 48 hours. I usually leave it there for about 12 and than shape the bread and leave it for another at least 12 hours. Just before baking leave it on the countertop until it reaches the room temperature. :)) happy baking!

I'm an early bird and like to use the hours when most people still sleep, but in winter it is harder to go out of bed in the morning. I give myself a little grace and wake up half an hour later - that helps with actually getting something done or having time to myself at the start of the day.
I also care more about hot food - it is no better way to start the day then porridge or hot English muffins.
I want to start baking my own sourdough bread, but all recipes that I find mention starter - does anyone know how to do this?

    • @an_birb
      @an_birb 6 місяців тому +1

Food Wishes here on UA-cam has a super simple sourdough starter tutorial! It's an easy process - you just need flour, water, and patience. There are more complex versions out there that have their own benefits, but I find Food Wishes' to be very approachable. I've been nursing a starter based on his recipe (I use half white and half wheat flour instead of his recommended flours) for almost 4 years now and it's still doing great.
