Years ago used too regularly do Fist Class London - Newcastle, whenever cheap First Class tickets were available, always took advantage. It's always worth doing the upgrade whenever possible. Well done for having done the "best" First Class.

I was on the LNER from King's Cross to Leuchars yesterday. During the entire 5.5 hour trip, they only came twice to offer hot drinks. But the train was very clean and spacious.
I usually only go first class if I have more than a 1hr journey somewhere. As due to the state of UK trains, we usually tend to only get two coaches, often never get a seat.
"Only having 7 cause I'm driving" 🤣 I actually do not like the pillow sometimes more uncomfortable than comfortable. Overall first class tickets without a discount are not worth it. The experience also depends on staff you get on the journey.
On every one of the very rare times I've gone first class, the carriage contains at least one screaming toddler (just like standard class), and the train runs seriously late....

LNER may have the best 1st class overall but they do NOT have the best catering. The menu is divided into 3 types (from best to least = Dine - Dish-Deli) but which you get is based on train, time of day and route ie in other words a lottery. Great if you manage to be lucky to get Dine (full breakfast) or frustrated if you cop Deli (bacon roll). Not only is that too much of a swing in quality/quantity it's really annoying if you travel on a 4+hour trip to Edinburgh on a Deli menu. Avanti West Coast has the best catering imo. Give me scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or full English breakfast (and these are just 2 options) over a bacon bap/toast any day.
I used to travel from Manchester to London in the 60's and we got a full meal cooked on board with coffee fresh brewed with waiter service and tablecloths and napkins. Come off it - this is rubbish compared. If the airlines can serve decent food in economy why not a high standard in rail first class? Answer is easy. Most travellers at this level are on the firm but had they to pay then they would expect far better. Just check out whether your next first class coach is fully booked and you will know if travellers think it good value. A couple of years ago i paid nearly £160 to travel from Manchester to Southampton in First. Two wretched butties, some crisps and carton orange in a plastic cup! Never again. Will buy decent food and wine to take onboard from M&S at Piccadilly with a standard seat, get decent food and save over £50!
Never worry about being under dressed for something like a First Class Lounge. The days of having to wear a collar and tie for such things are long gone. A friend of mine who's very much a multi millionaire tends to always wear, T-Shirt, Hoody, Jeans & trainers with a baseball cap. He does sometimes get some sideways looks, but he dresses the way he wants and doesn't give a fig for what anyone else thinks...

I travelled LNER first class to Leeds in May 2023 to attend my cousin's wedding.
I wish they had lamps on the table in first class like the GNER used to on their HSTs

It's for business people, after your meeting and you have nowhere to go between that at the train you've booked. It's quite handy.
