  • Santa Fe lives on the BNSF! Former Santa Fe Super Fleet C44-9Ws and B40-8Ws, have recently been assigned to Twin Cities area. They are currently dominating the transfers, locals, and other assignments out of Northtown Yard. We'll focus on the units still in Santa Fe colors in this video, and even see FOUR Santa Fe painted units together.
We'll start off seeing the BNCP Transfer working UP's Belt Yard with an impressive consist of four units. This was a GREAT start to 2024. After seeing this power move around a bit, we'll watch it race back to Northtown Yard. Following this, we'll see the C44-9Ws working The Midway Switch, and lugging around intermodal cars. They're also seen working the Tramp Job. We'll close it out by seeing the BNCP again, but with only BNSF 558 and 542, as they scream by on the Midway Sub. These units are survivors, and add a LOT of variety trackside.

I remember when Mike Haverty brought the warbonnet scheme back on the FP45s in the late 80s, then when the GP60Ms came out they were fantastic. EMDs paint sure lasted better than GEs for some reason. Still the best looking paint scheme ever.

This is a good video explaining about the "Classic" ATSF Warbonnets! It is true that this stuff survives in 2024, including lots of green ex BN engines! All the EMD Warbonnets are gone from BNSF. The SD75Ms are all stricken from the roster. Too bad all the GP60Ms are repainted to BNSF "Swoosh." Those have been rebuilt and will last longer, but this is progress. There are still GP60Bs, but those are all in H1 BNSF and still working! The only EMD ATSF painted units left on BNSF in 2024 are "Bluebonnets!" They look fairly good and that paint has survived much better! We gets lots of variety on BNSF! I am glad to see BN engines too! Those have lasted well, including lots of "Whiteface" units and are all EMDs! OK, I went to MN in May with "Railfan" Gary Sample to chase CP 2816 on the "Final Spike" steam train! I checked out Northtown Yard and was amazed to see a few "Warbonnets" working the yard as "Yard Goats" now with RCO! This is not what I expected to see. Kind of sad that the pride of the fleet for ATSF, the "Super Fleet" is now relegated to yards and locals. The most ATSF painted engines I have seen in years though! Stored in BNSF Northtown seemed like over 200 locos! Many types of engines. The only "Warbonnets" here were the BNSF ones and just a few. 4700 series C44-9Ws! There were some BN "Whiteface" engines and "Grinstein" SD70MACs! This trip was great and my first time by vehicle to MN since August 2004!
Well now, I went to Illinois and Iowa to catch CP 2816 returning from Mexico in June/July with my great friend "Mazon!" We saw CP 2816 working at Silvis, IL Railroading Heritage of Midwest America shops! During the expensive shop tour we saw ex BNSF/ATSF B40-8W # 537! In primer paint. This engine will be restored to fresh ATSF "Warbonnet" colors which is amazing! WOW, I cannot wait for this to happen! We went to Galesburg, IL for 2024 "Railroad Days!" Did the "VIP" bus tour. My first time to Galesburg since 2005. Saw many "Warbonnets" here. Some were switching and more sitting in the yard! Probably at least 10 "Warbonnets" seen! All of these are C44-9Ws, many with RCO! Good to find SD40-2B # 302 switching the hump in BN green paint! At the yard by the shops was BNSF SD40-2 # 1790 in BN "Cascade Green!" Wow! BNSF has been around longer than BN even existed! I saw an ex ATSF B40-8W in BNSF H2 paint sitting. Even a GP60B in BNSF H1! Hey, displayed at the Amtrak station was BNSF "Warbonnet" C44-9W # 720! What do you think of these? Sure they were built for BNSF in 1997, but sure look nice! Santa Fe ordered these before the official merging which is why they were delivered in these colors. Even the nose had "Santa Fe" lettering! Amazing BNSF did not have a newer engine on display like usual. Also, the 700 series GEs colors look better. They are only three years newer than the others, but look much better. Even better than the 600 series did at the same age. Maybe GE used better paint here. Also when I was 11 years old in 1994 I rode the Amtrak Southwest Chief between Chicago and Flagstaff, AZ. That was cool to ride the rails of ATSF while it still existed! My late Dad (RCJ I), who took me, was reading an article about BN and ATSF merging! I was amazed at that! Glad I rode this train! The official combination of ATSF and BN was December 31, 1996.

1:27 In the background is the former Milwaukee Road roundhouse where I started my railroad career in 1974. After the last bankruptcy I went over to Northtown Diesel Shop on Burlington Northern in 1979 where I retired in 2013. Good career. Those Santa Fe Warbonnets were a sharp paint scheme when they were new.

I’m happy to say that these engines will be rebuilt in the near future the only downside is they’re going to lose their red and silver paint and receive heritage III colors engine 537 was donated to the railroading heritage of Mid-America in Silvis Illinois and will be restored into Santa Fe war bonnet colors

The red Warbonnet design is so iconic that I'm sure it will survive on some locomotives in the future, perhaps with heritage engines. Here in Europe, this livery is - next to the UP yellow - the most famous locomotive painting from the USA - even before BNSF orange, CSX blue and NS black.

Hi SD457500! I first want to say, great info and footage of these amazing old school ATSF locos! Back in nov 2016, my close friend and I literally caught BNSF 554 (which I beleive is currently in Galesburg IL but not sure), leading 558 and 542 on a PTC move through Fullerton, CA station! I will never forget that move! Glad to see both Dash 8s are surviving 34 years after they were built! Again great footage! This "Legendary Cheering Railfan" approves! :)

Long live Santa Fe! I remember seeing these GE Dash 9-44-CW's, along with Santa Fe EMD SD75I's in the "War Bonnet" scheme with the "billboard" Santa Fe, back in the '90s. I was living in Colorado Springs, CO along the "Joint Line" and saw these units almost all the time. Around this same time, when the Santa Fe was receiving their new diesels, the Burlington Northern was receiving their SD70MAC locomotives. Man, how I miss those days. And speaking of the Burlington Northern Railroad, are you still able to spot any diesels still wearing BN paint? God bless.

Alot of them B40-8s are with shortlines, RJ corman has quite a few of them. The C40-8Ws were sold off and alot of them are on CN roster. 554 is still running around northern IL. Them old units still hit the mainlines more than people think. I see warbonnet dash 9s here and there. The BN SD70MACs that are supposedly all in storage are still run on coal drags as DPUs and mixed freights here in IL.
