Thank you for creating this video and this channel! Single player turn-based RPG's are still, after 35+ years of gaming, my favorite game genre. Lately it seems like turn-based RPGs from the big franchises are disappearing. With the "big ones" like Final Fantasy becoming spectacle fighters and not even RPG's anymore, I'm glad the Indy devs are picking up the slack!
I had the privilege of being a closed alpha tester for Bloomtown and let me tell you, the attention to detail that this game has is amazing, and there is so much stuff that we can do on the alpha (if we can even call it that, since it's very complete for a short demo). I hope it becames a huge success like sea of stars, it needs more marketing, that's all.
For me, *"Suikoden I&II HD Remaster",* *"The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak"* and *"Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes"* that are my most anticipated turn-based JRPGs in 2024. Additionally, I really REALLY hope that Bandai Namco announces the next *Digimon Story* game in the next "Digimon Con 2024" because I REALLY need a new Digimon game after Cyber Sleuth.

Unicorn Overlord didnt seem like a turn based game but if it is then I'm even more interested. I also hope that they really deliver with White Raven. Have been eyeing that one for a while now. Great list
@@r1ckNz Ogre Battle MotBQ and 64 are both RTS with a pause+command in the battle map, and an autobattler once units met in combat. Everything we've seen from UO points to it being the same exact mechanics. There is an overworld map where you move from place to place and build your army, then there's the battle map where you deploy your units and move them like an RTS, then when units encounter each other, we're not shown any UI elements that indicate we have any control over the combat. I'm relatively certain it's just a Vanillaware version of Ogre Battle. Two great games, imo, but if you don't like those games, can't see how UO will impress you.

Great video! New subscriber here. Looking forward to more videos about upcoming (and released) gems. I'm definitely getting Unicorn Overlord. It looks like a fantastic mesh between vanillaware's awesome artstyle and one of my favorite tactical rpg games, ogre battle 😊
Bloomtown seems so crazy in that almost slice of life farming sim look, just casually mixed with capturing demons under the town. It's like Stardew Valley banged with Yokai or something if NakeyJakey was making the video a couple years back.
Unicorn Overlord seems pretty promising. However i can't really put it in the same pile as FFT/Ogre Battle/Triangle Strategy. That would be due to the lack of a nice 3d battle field, its just flat and kinda boring. Same with Wandering Sword, great looking game with a flat boring battlefield. I like to move around and have the battlefield affect the combat as much as the characters do. It needs elevation and obstacles and for whatever reason a lot of developers dont seem to think this is important. I'll just keep waiting for the FFT remaster i guess lol. Love the channel, much love.
I enjoy the gameplay loop of the Persona games, but I'm very bored of the modern Japan setting. Metaphor Refantazio is for sure the AAA game I'm most looking forward to next year, even more so than FF7. Dark pain was a new addition to my Steam wishlist, so ty for bringing that to my attention.
I am not Japanese, but a Korean who loves the JRPG genre. I used a translator so the sentences may be strange. Many Western developers are creating great JRPG-likes. but, I personally have some regrets, and I'm curious about Western gamers' opinions on this. First, each character lacks charm and personality. (Not about appearance, such as the illustrations not being anime-style) Second, there seems to be a lack of events or conversations that show chemistry between party members. Third, I don't know if it's to prevent level grinding, but it seems like they're adding an unnecessary system to battle. It's interesting at the beginning of the game, but the more I play, the more boring it becomes than pure turn-based battle. (Disadvantages felt in both Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars) I can't speak for all Asian gamers, but most people around me have similar opinions. So I suddenly became curious about the opinions of people on the other side of the world. thank you
Aside from the disappointments, the puzzles in Sea of Stars were really cool. It's sad that the puzzle parts in games are getting easier as time goes by.
also can't speak for the western audience but personally, the awesome stuff from JRPG battle systems go two ways. Either grind up your character's stats to one shot the enemy or set up a sick sequence to one shot the enemy. Despite being turn-based, great JRPGs had a knack of giving you a ton of options to tackle the enemies with. Something that a lot of Western JRPGs lack. A new game that I recommend is WitchSpring R. It's Korean too so you can play it natively. That's one game that truly understood the essence of JRPGs.
Don't disagree, Chained echos has way better dialogue than Sea of Stars but I think both are extremely lacklustre when it comes to writing and character development, not to mention that battles get extremely boring after a while.
As much as I loved Suikoden II, I am a bit worried about the remaster because this is Konami we're talking about. I will still take a look when it comes out though. I am mostly excited for unicorn overlord
Thanks for letting us know. Yeah, I know. This game looks like a nice, strongly artistic SRPG from Vanillaware. Not sure about the combat screens, though. Even Rock Paper Shotgun wrote a recent article complaining about why it's not coming to the PC.
I have slow reaction time and bad hand-eye coordination so I mostly play turn based games. I tend to hold my breath when I am playing action games so they're quite exhausting to play.😂
So you weren't far off with your unicorn Chronicles comparison but it's not tactics Ogre reborn its Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber and Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen as well as the growlancer series that it is most similar to and I am looking very much forward to it there hasn't been a game like that for 15 years.

Kinda agreed with your opinion, because is overused now & almost indie developer making RPG using Pixel Art...I prefer 2D Anime like Unicorn Overlord if compare to the pixel art.. but for the future I wanna Big budget Turnbased games too
Honestly, it would be great if a developer makes a multiplayer/coop version of tree of savior with pinch of octapath traveler aesthetic. Love mmos but can feel off-putting when cash items are necessary or content is stretched thin. Would love a storydriven world building coop/multiplayer experience in this artstyle
Why does the main enemy/game theme always have to be demons now. I wish they would cool it with that for us more religious people that love rpg/turnbased games don't want their game being infested with that kinda stuff. It's sad cause some of the games look really cool.
I already had my eyes on the big, we can say better know titles like Eiyuden Chronicle, Metaphore and Unicor overlord but now I will have to add 2 games to my list with White raven and Dark pain both look absolutely amazing and both appeal to 2 different side of me White raven to my weeb side and Dark Pain to my veteran DD player side. Maybe a little tangent but Unicor overlord was not confirmed to be turn-based, so far only a tactical rpg but we also have little footage of the game. Scrifire was on my wish list since forever but at some point I delete it as it felt like it will never come out so maybe I will revisit this game Also whenever I see a game with woman that has a jawline more defined that a male bodybuilder I steer as far away from it as possible coz logic dictates that game like that will try to push this whole woke garbage on me so the Demonschool will be a hard pass for me
I don't understand the title stating JRPGs: As a genre, some are tactical RPGs, but if you are talking about localization, some aren't even from Japan. Why not just say turn based RPGs. I think this just confuses fans
For many, Japanese RPG means games inspired by them. To me it means story first, side content second, mechanics third. Usually turned based games with a longer playtime
Rui, technically, you are right, but I think that all these games are inspired and/or properly JRPGs by localization. Even the tactical ones recall classics jrpgs thanks to their graphic style. Take Bloomtown, for example. It's far from the usual setting and graphic style of JRPGs, but its combat system is inspired by the classics of the genre and for me, it is an RPG but also a JRPG. So, I don't think this title confuses the fan, but the opposite. They will find what they are looking for. Anyway, you are awesome and thanks for the feedback 👍😊

I'm sorry but these western rpg trying to mimic the style of early jrpg look like absolute trash. either the art is too cartoonist or ugly UI. dark deity is great enough but shame for the UI.
all the western games look the same they all use the same templates for characters. woman with colored hair,muscular woman, nerd guy(black), lgbbq stuff. just complete trash not even worth pirating for free let alone 2$+
Okay, these are not all JRPG's..... Some are and some are made by other countries. I don' t like how the word JRPG "Japanese RPG" became a genre.. More like classic 2D RPG is the right word.
At this point, we can consider it a "genre", language changes dude. There is a lot of different kind of rpgs right now, I think it's ideal to create or evolve terms, that way we can have everything in a more organized way. Althought i wouldn't put tactical rpgs and turn based rpgs under the same term, I would only use jrpg for the turn based ones, since that's pretty much what gave the recognition to a "japanese role playing game".

There are few sequences regarding the combat system for now, but it is turn-based. Regarding The White Raven is for sure one of the most promising.
I read it's like and RTS until you clash your party against an enemy, then you kind of watch them fighting... I'm not much interested because of that.

I don't understand the title stating JRPGs: As a genre, some are tactical RPGs, but if you are talking about localization, some aren't even from Japan. Why not just say turn based RPGs. I think this just confuses fans
For many, Japanese RPG means games inspired by them. To me it means story first, side content second, mechanics third. Usually turned based games with a longer playtime
Rui, technically, you are right, but I think that all these games are inspired and/or properly JRPGs by localization. Even the tactical ones recall classics jrpgs thanks to their graphic style.
Take Bloomtown, for example. It's far from the usual setting and graphic style of JRPGs, but its combat system is inspired by the classics of the genre and for me, it is an RPG but also a JRPG.
So, I don't think this title confuses the fan, but the opposite. They will find what they are looking for. Anyway, you are awesome and thanks for the feedback 👍😊

Indeed. They are all inspired by JRPGs. But for me, it became almost a subgenre.
At this point, we can consider it a "genre", language changes dude. There is a lot of different kind of rpgs right now, I think it's ideal to create or evolve terms, that way we can have everything in a more organized way. Althought i wouldn't put tactical rpgs and turn based rpgs under the same term, I would only use jrpg for the turn based ones, since that's pretty much what gave the recognition to a "japanese role playing game".
