Hey Nick, Kevin B. here. I'm so glad your mind was blown. The Lizard Suite is my favorite piece of King Crimson music. It didn't become my favorite after one listen. It took some time but I'm so glad I gave it the time to come into its own. So well arranged with fabulous British musicians. As a side note the drummer, Andrew Mccullough, was also the drummer for Greenslade, a keyboard oriented prog band worth listening to as well. I love his style! He is under appreciated. Prog on!

@@Alix777. I memorized "In the Wake of Poseidon" in high school in order to woo the ladies with poetry. I still know it today. Very prescient. One of their first exposures to the terror of the situation. Alas, not great wooing material. Great song though. I may have been the only person in Charlotte to own and love it at the time. Warren probably had it. He was from Manhattan and knew stuff.

The Cirkus is one of Crimson's best - menacing and playful - just brilliant
When this album came out my roommate at college and I would listen to the music in our dorm room with the lights out. The musicianship was spot on with the magical voice of Jon Anderson. The Bolero suite is especially good. Thanks Nick for getting to the Lizard album. It is one of King Crimson's best!
I turned into King crimson when I was 14 years old in 1969. I love the first album I love their second album but when this one came out I was so disoriented. But I have to say within a few years of owning this LP it became one of the top three albums that I would choose to have with me should I be on a desert island by myself. What are the other two albums I would have on an island, the first two King crimson albums LOL so here I am at 68 years old and I can tell you it's still one of my favorite albums. I appreciate your reaction to it and to Mr Fripp
This is one of my favourite King Crimson albums, I especially love this track "Lizard", with Jon Anderson's vocals (and Gordon Haskell's of course). I first to into this a few years after Bill Bruford joined them After Lark's Tongues in Aspic, I bought this and loved it. I must have been 19 when I first heard this.
Peter SInfield's lyrics are stunning on all the early KC albums (and ELP albums).
I love Robert Fripp's "backward" guitaring; stunning craftsmanship throughout.
And the way that Bolero transitions from classical beauty into Jazz with Keith Tippett's stunning jazz piano playing, Mel Collins' Saxophone, Robin Miller's Oboe brings tears to your eyes with his emotionally beautiful playing, is phenomenal. An absolute classic; one of their best tracks (and I'm a Red/Starless and Bible Black/Lark's Tongues in Aspic fan).
This, Lizard, was the last track on the album and "Big Top" is a reprise of "Circus".
This band means the world to me...and the vocals of Jon Anderson only add to the majesty of it all. Top draw. 😍
That wailing trombone in The Battle of Glass always evokes images of war elephants. I've been drawn to Crimson since the early 80's and enjoy even the chaotic elements. F.y.i., Robert Fripp was thinking about asking Jon Anderson to join the group but didn't think Anderson would leave Yes. Anderson later said that if he knew about the offer at the time he would have taken Fripp up on it.

In a world of infinite universes, there will be an infinitum of them where Jon Anderson joined King Crimson, Prince Rupert may be a window to see how their musical landscapes would/will/do have melted together.
The drummer on this, Andrew McCulloch, went on to drum in 'Greenslade' and then later got out of the music business altogether to teach yachting.
Thank you so much Kevin. Back in 1970 for some strange reason, after loving 'In The Court of the Crimson King,' I missed listening to 'In The Wake of Poseidon' and 'Lizard' and only caught up with King Crimson on 'Islands' which I adore. This was wonderful. Let's hope it stays up and Nick can listen to the magnificence of all the various line-ups that make up the King Crimson story.
P.S. Andy McCulloch is indeed a wonderful, underrated drummer and Greenslade were superb. Nick has heard them a couple of times as they have featured on some prog marathons.
Once, many moons ago, I brought a cassette recording of a compilation of KC tunes I like to an old guy's house for listening while we played cards. This kind of music wasn't his but he was very agreeable to my bringing along something I liked to listen to. The lyrics to Lizard, of course, are weird, though probably relevant to Prince Rupert's story. I remember the old guy looking at me quizzically while repeating, "Stake a lizard by the throat? Lol

It would be interesting to do a comprehensive comparison between "70's" King Crimson (you'd have to include 1969's Court of the Crimson King), "80's" King Crimson (red, blue, and yellow albums), "90's" King Crimson, and "2000's" King Crimson. There was such a long break between each "era" of the band which is pretty unique. One of the first albums I ever bought was In the Court of the Crimson King, so that is a nostalgic favorite, but I also really dig Discipline.

Nice! Jon Anderson on vocals right out of the gate. Thanks for this reaction. A great, often underrated KC album, along with ISLAND. And unfortunately, the personnel on this album never performed live as a band. That would have been so cool.
And much of the orchestration is Mellotron. Before Genesis and Yes, the most progressive use of Mellotron was in King Crimson. Beatles sort of pioneered it. The Moody Blues made it a staple in their band and on all their albums. But it was King Crimson who made it a signature instrument and sound for prog.
All those string section parts are from the Mellotron.

What's amazing about Fripp's Mellotron playing is that he didn't play any Mellotron on the 1st album at all.
It wasn't until Ian McDonald left that Fripp had to master the Mellotron for this and the 2nd album as well and he really did along an amazing learning curve for.
Other than In the Court, this is definitely my next favorite album. I think it is their stand-alone most unusual work. This was the first album Steven Wilson asked Robert Fripp to remix in surround. Stunning! ✌️😎
What's great about this is that it is not predictable. Some peeps cannot handle that and defer to pop, which is fine too.
I’m really lucky I got to see this live in Mexico City, one of the very few times this piece was played live. Great reaction!
They played this and/or parts of this live during the 2017 tour at a lot of venues. I saw them do this in Allentown, PA at Miller Symphony Hall

You'll get it the next time you hear it, but: The jazz part in the middle of Bolero is all improvised around the vocal melody and chord progression of "Prince Rupert Awakes." It's a varied reprise of the first movement as the middle section of the second. What's it all about? Here's my interpretation: The whole suite is an allegory of transgression and retribution. Prince Rupert listens to the peacock's tale and pursues its grandiloquent visions ("walls and trumpets thousand fold … reels of dream unrolled"). The vast opulence of the Bolero's first and last sections and the hedonistic excess of the jazz part are the transgressions. The retribution comes in the Battle and Lament. The Prince loses everything and is left wailing across a blood soaked plain.
This was first track when I realise that I like jazz. I was 15.... So the journey begins
Through the years, the lineups have changed but the music is still crazy good!
Every KC lineup is different, and pushes the boundaries in different ways. The bolero is probably KC at its most romantic and jazziest; the Lark’s Tongues in Aspic era is my favourite, but I’d be interested to see what you make of some of the later stuff like The Construction of Light, which is very different. For years Fripp said that he disliked Lizard (with the exception of the bolero); I was astonished when they started to play the rest of the suite in their last couple of tours.
Indeed! If I have this right, it was Steven Wilson, when he was doing the remix, that softened Fripp's view of Lizard!
Nick so glad you did this one of my favorites. It's sad they take down reactions as it's a great way to find and experience new John Anderson on vocals yes.
Possibly their most eccentric album but I recall just loving it when it was released. The fusion of jazz and everything else is unlike anything they've done elsewhere. 'Islands' has a similar vibe but less abrupt. Lizard, the whole record is a stand out album in their repertoire. The final section Big Top is a rreprise to the opening track and probably not actually part of the 'Lizard' track. Keith Tippett is brilliant here as he was on the previous album, a great improvising pianist , past away some years ago. His band 'Centipede' influenced much of the jazz portions here. RIP Keith.

I was obsessed with this band and this record in my youth.... we had more attention I guess because music was so much less accessible, if I bought "Lizard" i was going to listen to it A LOT, try to learn it, just as a listener.... having been a Fripp freak already, what really most affected my ears from this record was Keith Tippett's piano. THAT was super new to me, a different thing, at the time!
Such a “world ending” sound Tippett made, or at least that’s how I see it, haha.

@@NicknLexHi Nick, I have to remind you to get back to Jon & Vangelis. Two short songs from them, both outstanding non album tracks not even on CD. Song Is and Sing With Your Eyes are over the top beautiful songs. Lex should be in on that too. Another most beautiful song is Deborah, Jon writes it to his daughter, so beautiful that the closing part always chokes me up.

You must react to Cirkus is my favorite track of this album. I love the fact that Jon Anderson sings on the first movement of Lizzard, Robert was Flat Mates with the Band so he invited Jon to sing on it, becoming the first member of Yes to play with King Crimson...

Just checked the dates. This came out between Time and a Word and Yes Album...maybe when Yes was "regrouping" after after Peter Banks left (was fired?) so JA was wondering if YES would be able to continue....maybe auditioning for KC...just in case?
The best piece of music that ever exists. The Lizzard Suite makes a connection to heavens dimension. Once upon a time I was on vacation with my mom, in Barcelona. I was starring at a magnific Gaudí building and, from nowhere, this song popped on my mind without my searching. The woodwind instruments part (oboe/english horn, trumpet, etc) specially. It was surely divine and incomprehensible.
Also, KC Lizzard is among my desert island albums.
Gordon Haskell released a very good solo LP titled ‘It Is and It Isn’t’.
I have it and love it. John Wetton is on bass.

One of my favorite songs, no, "Lizard" is not a SONG, it is already a composition. As an album as a whole, there are EVEN better ones from the band for me. "Larks Tongues Pt.I" was the first song I heard from the band on the radio (yes there was a time when such songs were played on radio shows) and I was blown away by KC. “Lizard” is so diverse and musically creative. I really enjoyed following a different instrument through the piece each time I listened to it. So many nuances, so much ingenuity. “Prince Rupert’s Lament” blew me away. The haunting, hypnotizing percussion and Fripp's melancholy, sad, wide stretched notes on the guitar, almost like a bagpipe...incomparable.

That was Keith! Wow! I saw him rock a full Opera House in Boston in the 80s. Improved the whole night, I think. He seemed to be humping the piano, so I assume he was a fan of the other Keith. Must be a Keith thing. 2nd row! A rare stroke of good luck.

Lizard is a masterpiece
I was 17 years old when I bought Lizard. I love this album. I place it in my top five. Robert’s majestic mellotron is mesmerizing. His electric guitar parts are used sparingly, but are whimsically and masterfully constructed and played. The acoustic playing on Cirkus is fantastic. And, of course, the brass section is a pleasant surprise. 47:01 People who have forgotten about this album should dust it off and give a spin. It’s magical.
My favorite KC album, much because I listen to it in my headphones at bedtime so many times back then. The whole record is so beautiful, it's like it took me to another place and time where I felt more at home.
In 1970/11 - McDonald & Giles from the first KC LP made an LP that is soooo much early KC for me. Not too many people know about it. That too bad when it is a very good one. Did only find sida A on YT.

I really like Lizard and also In the Wake of Poseidon, those two albums do seem to slip through the cracks somewhat. If you love the classical side of prog, you'll definitely love the entirety of The Snow Goose by Camel.

Just as an aside, Prince Rupert was a real person and Prince Rupert’s tears of glass, also known as Prince Rupert’s drops are a real thing and a bit of a scientific curiosity. You should look them up on UA-cam, there are some really fun videos. Basically it’s molten glass dripped into water. The result looks like a glass teardrop. If you hit the larger tear portion with a hammer it won’t shatter. But if you hit the tail portion the entire thing disintegrates.
The trumpet right after you pause the second time was so reminiscent of Miles Davis “Sketches of Spain”
I LOVE Lizard…it was the first King Crimson album that I ever bought. The second side is one of my favourites of all time..starting with guest vocalist Jon Anderson on prince Rupert awakes. I was lucky enough to see them perform Bolero and the battle live in Nottingham….never thought that I would ever see it live. Amazing…thank you Mr Fripp!!!!
PS…the Jon Anderson vocals also intrigued me…so I searched him out and then discovered…YES. Great year for my music education
Fripp himself wasn't a big Lizard fan until he reportedly "heard the Music in the music" when listening to Steven Wilson's 2009 40th anniversary remix. Yet there are plenty of Crimson followers who place Lizard at the very apex of the group's recorded legacy -- and with good reason. Seamlessly blending rock, jazz, and classical in a way that few albums have successfully achieved, Lizard is epic, intimate, cacophonic, and subtle by turn -- and infused with the dark moods first heard when "21st Century Schizoid Man" and "Epitaph" reached listeners' ears the previous year. - AllMusic

The song Cirkus that you referred to, which is on this album, is well worth listening to. There is a live album, also called Cirkus, which was a limited release by King Crimson, and the version on that is even better than the studio version.
Such an amazing and long underappreciated album. Stunning, and even better when much of it was performed live 2014+
Fripp is known for his searing and angular guitar work, but he is also capable of writing some gorgeous melodies and this suite is full of them.
I am over the moon. Fripp and John AND Nick! The only thing missing is Lecks!

Their best album in my opinion is Lark's Tongues in Aspic. Worth listening to the whole album.
I have been aware of King Crimson for some time and am aware of the musicians who've played in the band, and I have listened to their work elsewhere, in other bands with other artists, but never spent much time listening to King Crimson proper. That being said, in recent months, I've been giving the band more of a listen. There's certainly some interesting stuff here.

I dare you to do a ‘react’ to King Crimson "Level Five".
Lake did vocals and bass on the first KC album and vocals on all but one song on Wake of Poseidon. Peter Giles played bass on that second album. Please do their first album. It's honestly mind-blowing. Lex needs to hear it too.
There isn't a band on this album per se.
Everyone is a contracted musician on this and even 'In The Wake of Poseidon', except of course Mr. Fripp.
King Crimson did not tour for the 2nd album nor this, the 3rd album. as there technically was no 'band' for either.
The battle of Naseby, prince Rupert lead the charge of the cavaliers but then wasted time looting the round head baggage train.
The drummer portrays the musketeers the trombone injured horses.

😃 Lizard and Islands that followed are my favorite KC albums. Fusion, avant garde and experimental jazz. It can be a hard listen for some I think. Bolero is so good. It had been one of my first exposures to the band. Lizard is just brilliance. The instrumentals telling more story than the sung portions. Big Top is a coda call back to the 1st song of the album "Cirkus" so is out of place in the suite.
I listen much the same way taking in all the individual instruments parts into whole tapestry of sound. The chaos is everything.
My favorite, but Fripp and most involved absolutely hate the two orphan lineup albums for the hell in recording them. Haskell was on Wake of Poseidon for one track after Greg left before taking this on. He and Fripp were childhood friends or something but, this may have killed their friendship. He and other members left after this. He was replaced with Boz for Islands which further eroded members and then comes Bill and John Whetton for the classic 70's lineup.

Not my favorite but well worth the listen. Very jazzy and has some nice hooks. In The Court and Larks's Tongue from this period, Red from the trio years, Discipline from the 80's and Thrak from the 90's for me. Great request Kevin. Of all the King Crimson projects, this was always the most difficult listening experience, particularly this epic composition.

Loved this of course, 1000 thanks, but what I'm most impressed with is your courage at putting this on your channel. Robert Fripp is ruthless, he's had accounts permanently closed for less than this. Please be careful, would hate to see this channel end. I suppose you've done your due diligence though.
The only reason I did it was that I have seen other smaller channels with this song in full reacted to. Mr. Fripp could give me a copy strike which would be terrible but UA-cam cant delete the channel without receiving 3 strikes. If I get a strike I would fight it. I am pausing multiple times throughout the video and its fair use since I transformed the original content with my commentary. I didn't just upload the full song and kept quiet.

Mr. Fripp and his wife just joined some reactors and reacted with the couple to Metallica's Enter Sandman. It would be weird doing a reaction video and then striking other reaction channels don't you think? Maybe this changed his mind on the whole reaction thing? I just got vip tickets for the upcoming "Beat" tour which is actually sanctionned by Fripp. It focuses on the early 80's King Crimson lineup of Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. Steve Vai is going to be doing Fripp's parts, in his own way, and Danny Carey from Tool will be substituting for Bill Bruford in his way, along with originals Levin and Belew. Should be epic. I Imagine they'll be heading your way also.

Just so you know, some consider this their worst album, and when you hear some of the music on the other side, you'll see why. It definitely took me a while to get used to, that's for sure 😏
I had heard a rumor that Fripp wasn't all that impressed with Jon Anderson. Something about Jon always wanting the song to be more ethereal, more wafting and Fripp saying "what does Prince Rupert want now?" referring to Anderson.
Yes was the right vehicle for Jon
It's interesting that Jon sings on this before Yes went full prog.
I've never been a fan of free jazz where everyone solos at once and don't seem to be working together. Rush does an everybody solo in Freewill, but the instruments don't clash.
After the first sax solo at the beginning of the Bolero section, you said an oboe took over, then you chabhed that to glute. I thought it was actually Fripp playing with his volume and sustain.

To me, King Crimson has always brushed up against "too experimental" but their virtuosity is unrivaled. Like Yes's Relayer, this album makes frequent use of dissonance balanced with beautiful, melodious passages.

if you cant hear the influence you need to listen to more Ennio. Trust me I have listened to hundreds of albums of his. He has over 400 soundtrack recordings.

I beg to disagree. It is a different band than the first KC iteration, much jazzier, but I really like it. But I liked it at first listen, even though by then Fripp had moved on to the Larks Tongue era. I don't think I am alone in thinking Lizard is both good and fascinating.
