Road cycling would have the most primadonna's per capita than any other sport. Don't get me wrong, there's some absolute legends but on the other hand, some have nothing more in life than Strava data and $500 cycling shoes. You made the right decision in leaving that altercation out, no need to bring that negativity into your videos. Loving your channel and content mate. Thanks
Mate! Being from Sydney and having (attempted) The Chop many a time, those guys have a really bad reputation for treating anyone that gets in their way poorly. Innocent users of the park get yelled at constantly by the regulars at the front of The Chop, it’s pretty disgraceful. It’s no wonder that motorists treat us so poorly in Sydney. Glad you made the most of it anyway, you did well!
This is not a good look for us cyclists, the speed limit around centennial park is 30km/h. Its dangerous to the general public - stick to the crit tracks for this stuff.
I don't think it helps to lump the majority of law abiding, friendly cyclists in with the idiots. That type of language helps justify a motorist's next close pass or poor overtake.
I’ve just started road cycling (4 months in) and I’ve joined the Zwift crew and honestly couldn’t agree more with the comments around the encouragement and friendly vibe - I was super nervous joining even if it is only online
Maaate you're on fyah! 🔥🔥🔥 And, moreover, you're a gentleman. From reading some of the comments below, sounds like a lot of egos who think they're in a pro peloton! You're absolutely right, we should be encouraging each other and educating those who aren't familiar with group riding etiquette. Big up yourself X
Great to see you had a good time in Australia, don't worry about that "certain young lad" regardless of the country/city that sort of behavior should not happen, just ignore it. I live in Sydney and there are lots of genuine and friendly cyclists. Just got back from my ride (80km) had to burn off those Christmas calories but also had to do a coffee and pastry stop haha. Your last ride in Melbourne and that pastry delicious mate. Look forward to seeing your MAAP collaboration.
Top riding mate. As someone still new to the sport and not yet joined a group ride hearing things like this makes me nervous! I wouldn’t have a clue what I was doing not having done it before. Hopefully when I do take that step people will be understanding! I’m sure you’ll feel better when you get back to the UK with your normal chain gang!
99% of people will tell you politely. This is an intense race pace ride and not for amateurs, it would have been best for this dude to sit at the back a bit more to learn how they were taking turns, but he probably got excited which happens to us all. Again 99.9% of other cyclists will be happy to show you the ropes, probably even the guy he's complaining about, just in a different environment, not when you're going 50kmph with cars and people around.
Watching your vids and some of the other cyclist channels inspired me to get an action camera to film some of my rides. The first time I took it out, however, I was making a turn at low speed, going wide of a pothole but running over some marbly gravel. Front wheel washed out and I totally ate it. Camera survived, though! Back at it once my knee feels better. 😅
First time coming across your channel. A tattooist that cycles, im already amazed. A cycling tattooist that spit their own bars as their intro?! Mindblowing. And when your bars got some anazing wordplay, i cant even. Quick question!! How are you such a powerful cyclist, did you train particularly hard in any areas or was it just pedalling and pedalling and we'll eventually get there?
Awesome video brother, there will always be that person. Always love your content and your positive attitude! Cheers mate, and my dream would be to come to where you live and ride with ya.
Loving the videos. Your point on clubs, or groups not being too inviting. Witnessed this first hand on a local group ride… don’t think these middle aged men took too well to two young lads turning up. Wasn’t racing, in fact it was supposed to be a 14/25mph average… ended up being nearly 17mph average. They didn’t speak to us at all, and when they did it was patronising. Haven’t went back since, stuck with my mates. Very off putting. Ego comes out in these clubs
I’m a Sydney cyclist and I could not agree more with some of these comments. It’s bad enough you cop the odd motorist abusing you but the cyclist can be worse. Lucky they are fast because I’d love to pull a few of them apart like bbq chicken. Another approach could be to educate someone on what they could be doing wrong OR maybe invite them to a low key ride and educate through experience and actions. Sick channel btw👍🏽
Hey, Greetings from Germany i like your Videos and i love your Style. I think your Videos get me more into cycling, i currently ride a gravelbike and soon maybe an Aerobike too 😅
Its called arrogance Tom,They see you as an outsider and you were probably stronger than the said young lad....People dont like it when a fast guy comes along and mixes it with them,I have been cycling many years and i see it all the time, but here in Essex and our club NEV North Essex Velo we encourage people who are a bit slower on our chaingangs to stick in the middle of the pack and if they loose a wheel we pull them back on...Great video as usual Tom,and well done for biting your tongue as its better to say nothing and hold your head high.
Saw you riding up Els Angels today 8 Dec. If want a 3 - 4h loop solid pace, meet at Pont de Pedra 10am Friday 9 Dec. Will look out for you Cheers Gordon
Shame you had a bit of a bad experience, but glad it didn't take away from some fun riding for you... I am sure the words "knob jockey" would fit accurately for that rider. I live in Sydney (would rather not but have to for family reasons) and Sydney is a big city with lots of self-important people, unfortunately you encountered one. Obviously lots of great people here too, best to move on quickly from that, as you have & realise he's the one with an issue. Keep up the great content, love it.
That dude is just a sore looser. If you ever stop into Newcastle (2 hours north of Sydney) our cycling community is much more welcoming. Solid ride! Well done.
Don't be to offended the Chop is Chop everyone cops a mouthful from time to time these blokes are the REAL week in week out local racers. There's always a couple of clowns who think they are "pro tour" who get sorted out and then the sensitive Cindy's who've never pinned a number on that think everyone deserves a prize for turning up, It is what it is, STRAYA! You did well. Great vid, I hope you enjoyed your trip.
Love the video as always, I would have been interested to know how you were 'getting it wrong' and to see what the guy had to say for himself. Feedback is always useful but I understand you want to keep the positive vibe going. Imagine if he was able to watch himself back, wonder how he would have reacted?!
Interesting difference here between Melbourne and Sydney. I've got mates who regularly ride both and the Sydney guys say the bunches up there are cliquey and unwelcoming. I'm sure there's exceptions, but this played out without surprises. Full disclosure, I'm from Melbs...so 🤷♂
I entered a Sportive only a year into cycling about 5 years ago, it was a Peloton start, I had no clue what was going on!!! Pointing at potholes, shouting “on yer left, on yer right” it was elbow to elbow, I’d only ever ridden alone or in a 3! 😂😂 The biggest mistake I made was a couple riding together we’re on the brakes for no reason, I just shot through the middle of them and the husband gave out a big TUT, I was mortified, I had to power on for the next 5 miles just to pull away from the embarrassment😂😂😂 But hey, people shouting at others is totally out of order, probably sleeps with the bike and still a virgin. Cya ✌🏻🤩
Love your vids old mate, and good on you for taking the higher ground and not giving that bloke any airtime👍. Unfortunately, standard fare in some of the well known bunch rides in Sydney (me generalising, but as an ex Sydney-sider have seen it happen too many times😵💫). Come back to Melbourne anytime, and we’ll show you a more civil time.😜 I’m hoping you got up to West Head /Akuna Bay while you were in Sydney though… Keep up the great work mate, you are well strong on a bike and a good storyteller to boot💪
Short max effort every so often will be ok and I’d have one if I was training for races (running or cycling), the HR looks high but he’s probably a younger man and some people just have higher HR zones.
Don't deserve you to waist your time showing him or that moment with him on your videos. The best is what you did. Enjoy and not give it more importance than what it has (none). There are certain "stars" and "pros" on the roads that are above and beyond us and we need to ride saying sorry to them hahahahaha F them, let's be more community and supportive with each other like you and the FAAST CREW are, normal people🙌🏻
I have unfortunately had similar experiences the few times I have visited Sydney and done the Chop. As you said, totally unnecessary and a bit of a shame really.
Don't worry about the amateurs (who think their pros) and think it's their right to dictate to you, at the end of the day your all there to enjoy yourselves not to bitch and moan, people like that put others off from joining in, and then they wonder why no one comes and rides with them.....!! ....and their group is so small
Do you know what you were doing wrong in the eyes of that young lad? Apart from weaving all you can do is slipstream, overtake, keep ya power down and get ready to be overtaken.
No need for it at all - gangs i ride with would not think of treating people poorly - its all about encouraging others - anyone acting like that will quickly find themselves riding alone.
I don't know why that happens. It seems the faster the group ride, the bigger the egos and the more dickheads you run into, at least here in the States. But your point is a good one, if they just politely told you what you were doing wrong instead of barking at you, it would go over much better. I'm a 210lb (95kg) rider with nearly as many tattoos as you, so I tend not to get yelled at by the average tiny cyclist, but I see it happen far too often. Good video though and I'll sub and see what else you get up to.

Look, the chop is an acquired taste. Show up frequently enough and everyone cools it.. but no one goes on their first few nights without getting put on blast.. it doesn't matter who you are. its chaotic riding in and around Sydney. Everyone who isn't a cyclist is as likely to throw a bottle at you as they are to wave.. and as a result the riding community is much quicker to offer a fuck you before a have a nice day.

So fucking true lol, I used to run a cafe and the amount of times cyclists would leave their bikes on tables on a sat or sun morning blew my mind

Sydney cyclists do no favours for themselves thats for sure
This is not a good look for us cyclists, the speed limit around centennial park is 30km/h. Its dangerous to the general public - stick to the crit tracks for this stuff.

Hackgolfer below has some criticisms regarding those on Strava and expensive shoes. Ignore him and keep on cycling ps can you post your video?
At least you got it on film

Well done bud! nice one ! great Vlog! where do you get all your energy from ? especially at them speeds 🙂 ⏩
Nice video again! What is the brand of these glasses you’re wearing on the bike?
Centennial Park may be the Mecca for cyclist here in Sydney but how boring is going round and round in a circle… it’s suppose to be fun.
It's like a hamster wheel. At least if you add 'Cat's Ears' to the circuit it spices it up a little
I did 300km on a 40 degree day, safe to say I hate the place now.

Theres always an ego or three in anything we do. Cycling, boating, dirt bikes, cars etc. Youll find alot of them end up on their own at some stage.

The amount of “pros” that don’t wave back at me on open car-less B roads in Scotland is unreal. Just rude. One life 👍🏻
