Restoration of Rusty Legendary Cossack Saber KKV

- Hi! Today, the restoration of the legendary saber (shashka) KKV (Caucasian Cossack Army). The object was found in the ground, the original handle was removed (the handle is made of buffalo horn). The condition is poor, the blade is damaged, deep rust. But for me, it's only interesting - I'm starting to recover.
The first thing I did for a way to remove the modern imitation of the handle, clean the blade with an iron brush and place a rust remover for 17 hours. Next, he neutralized the acids with water and soda.
I repaired the damaged cutting edge with a piece of carbon steel of hand saw. Then I ground it and gave it a lost shape. Next, I restored the fullers to the surface of the blade and sanded the blade itself slightly. Next, I preserved the blade itself with a protective layer of iron oxide and graphite grease.
I chose a beech handle for the saber (hard and flexible wood), brass pins. The new scabbard was made of dry beech wood as well. I glued it with genuine leather and made the fittings out of nickel silver. I hope you enjoy this restoration video, please don't forget to share this video.

Makes me think craftsmen and smiths should install a small tub in their workshops just for that purpose. It's dedicated for projects and not people's baths. Finding an old, discarded tub at junkshops and the like shouldn't be hard.

А с какого бодуна,вы решили,что это ,,шашка казаков"!?!? Это ,,кавказказская" шашка и самой лучшей из них считалась шашка изготовленная чеченскими мастерами - рукоять которой,украшали,,волчья голова"!
Она называлась ,,Волчок" и ценилась очень высоко,среди всадников,той эпохи..

ККВ это шашка Кубанского казачьего войска.
С 1904 года выпускалась Златоустовским оружейным заводом.
Так же они выпускали кинжал ККВ.
Ещё есть шашка ТКВ Терского казачьего войска

Работа отличная!!! Хотелось бы маленькое уточнение... Как такового, Кавказского казачьего войска несуществовало! А вот Кавказское Линейное казачье войско, в исотрии было и просуществовало оно с 1832 по 1860 год! А потом было объединино с Черноморским казачьим войском в одно Кубанское казаье войско! Я просто как раз проживаю, где и было Кавказское линейное казачье войско!
Поэтому, осмелюсь предположить, что эта шашка ККВ - Кубанского казаьего войска! Хотя, вполне может быть и ТКВ - Терского казачьего войска. Они очень похожи! Заготовки этих шашек покупали в Золингене, а уже на Златоуствской оружейной фабрике делали сами клинки! Поэтому, на таких шашках в картушах было две абривеатуры "ЗОФ" , а на другой стороне "ККВ" или "ТКВ" и год производства! Хотя у нас их называют - шашка погружная,Кавказского образца...

I don't know what you're using to remove rust but you often have to leave a piece sticking up out of the chemical. You might try wrapping that part with cloth and pouring chemical over it. It will also wick up from the bottom of the cloth.

Доброго времени суток, Алекс! Хорошая работа, как всегда с умом! Аббревиатура ККВ изначально означала Кубанское Казачье Войско, а после объединения с Терским Казачьим Войском (ТКВ) ККВ стало означать Кавказское Казачье Войско. До объединения в ТКВ использовались трёхдольные клинки, а после объединения двудольные, как в Кубанском войске. Алекс, "я тебе один умный вещь скажу, ты только не обижайся" 😉 - нижнюю обоймицу надо было всё же повыше установить, а то сильно большое расстояние от верхней получилось. Но если Музей не в притензиях, то всё нормально, и так большую работу проделал. 👍👍👍 И спасибо за очередное хорошее видео! Всегда ждём следующие! 👍🤝😉

Take an old piece of hardware and make it look presentable, no blabbering, no expensive shop.......

Все отлично как обычно, но ручку можно было обжеть горелкой ,состарить ,плюс она бы стала темнее в цвет ножен и потом пройтись её железной счеткой вспкрылась бы структура древесины и потом уже воском или маслом,но в целом отличная работа!!!

Если это казачья шашка, то ножны изготовлены не правильно. Рукоять шашки не должна заходить в ножны. Посмотрите в исторических документах как выглядела казачья шашка. С уважением к Вашему мастерству.
Это не совсем козачья скорее кавказский вариант козачья немного другая и чуток подленее

Подделка должна быть лучше оригинала а здесь поросто гаражная реставрация слепили из того что было
Красивая реставрация много труда и интересный музей правда теперь это предмет только для посмотреть тыквы ему опасны и молодым кавалеристам тоже не давать.

Can you please tell me the specifications of the blade of this sword? the length . Blade width and material And also the weight of the blade
When the shashka was in good condition 120-150 years ago, the data were as follows
Hardened blade steel
Total length ~ 900 - 940 mm with scabbard
Blade length - 760 - 790 mm
Handle length - 140 -160 mm
Blade width - 30 - 35 mm
The thickness of the blade is 5 mm
The hardening of the blade is 55 HRC.
Weight - 900 g
wow those swords can be treated so very poorly... you do a great job restoring
Beautiful restoration job you did on that Cossack saber. After all the hard work you put in not only restoring the saber but also making a new sheath for it, you got it all looking much better. Excellent work.

It never ceases to amaze me, how you manage to turn a seemingly worthless, rusty chunk of junk, back into its former glory.
There is an old superstition here in the south of the USA that you can't give a knife away, it's bad luck. When I was a child in the 70's, it was not uncommon to see a man tell another man, "Give me a dime." When the other man gave him a dime, he would take a knife out of his pocket and give it to him. Great job as usual on the shashka.
I really liked the video, I didn't like the job you did with this sword. You should have done better, the same process on the entire sword with the solder and leftover metal from the saw you used.
Okay, maybe I'm thinking of another Saber.. but didn't the Cossack Saber have an edge to about 5 inches on the back side of the sword? Just curious. You rock.❤
No, these sabers were imported from Germany in large quantities and also manufactured at the Zlatoust Arms Factory
