    Jason, I think that downward flex/dangling racquet head position that Tiafoe gets to is actually how he gets such a loose fast swing. Even though it looks a bit ugly maybe, you can see how loosely he is holding the racquet, to the point where the weight of the racquet head is really felt and gravity is just forcing it into this downward flex dangling position, in preparation for really throwing the racquet head into the ball. It is quite the explosive forehand with his fast hands and natural strength. Khachanov has basically to me the same technique, but Tiafoe seems even looser and more explosive to me.

      Jonathan, I would agree to some extent. In 2014-2015 I spent 2 years working for USTA Player Development and Tiafoe was being coached by the USTA. There was a lot of debate and attempts by Jose Higueras to get rid of this "funky looking" swing that Tiafoe was and still is using. Jose was hitting serves at Tiafoe from the net with Frances standing on the baseline for hours to try to get him to shorten the forehand swing. He was trying to take his time away to prove that the exaggerated swing would cause him to be late.
      Later that day my boss at the time filmed Tiafoe's forehand when he was in the training session with Tiafoe. I got called into the office to review it with both my boss and Jose Higueras. They asked me "if his technique was a problem?" He explained that they were unable to get him to shorten the swing. The first thing I said was, is he late on balls because of it? The answer was no. The second thing I asked is if it was causing injury? The answer was also no. I explained to them that his hands were uniquely fast, that his hand speed was a gift and his hands reminded me of the speed of a cats paw when you poke at a cat and they react amazingly fast to your hands. At that time in 2015 I said to both of them, don't change the technique, he's fine, his handspeed let's him get away with it.
      And to this day, he hits the forehand the exact same way he did then. I do believe there are certain situations where he could benefit from a shorter swing, but the player also has to be willing to make the changes. Not every player is willing to change, you can't force them to change, it's a relationship and not a dictatorship in tennis.

    I agree with the analysis.. At this point I wouldn’t change much other than him staying above his contact point on a ball on the rise by getting closer to where the ball will bounce.. he seems to always be coming up when he could use the leverage more and take a little more time away from the opponent.. although he is a bit deep in the court..

    The quickness of his hand is because of the way he keeps his elbow high so it doesn't really matter if the tip of the racquet dips, I like the comparison you made to cats' paw speed, if you notice cats also keep their elbows high when punching.

      It might become a issue for him if loses his wrist strength/ snap later on in his career plus I think his reaction time is currently Ok (don't know if that will change later in his career) , and he is quick to get into position but I would also like to know what sinner changed in his technique. He was similar to Musetti at first, good results on clay but struggled on hard but seems to have made his swing more compact. Also both he and kyrgios (who has incredible hand speed and control) use ~ 325 SW frames. Not sure what Francis specs are and if that makes a difference.

    benoit paire has that "tip dip," too. Drives me crazy to watch these guys hit forehands doing that. But hey, top 50 in the world they are and I'm not...so...I will say the tip dip is indicating just how loose they're keeping their hand, wrist and arm...I truly think they're allowing the wrist to collapse at that tip dip point to remain completely whip like through contact.

    I personally don't like it. Having your right hand hold all of the weight of the racket means you have some unnecessary tension there even if your wrist is loose. I do think this hurts him because it could mean the difference between hitting a very hard shot and a hard shot. Sock has a similar forehand and where has it gotten him? A good highlight video but that's it. Khachanov has more success but he cannot sniff a major's final. Every technical deficiency matters in tennis and if your opponent can exploit your weakness, you will lose. Bottom line. Would like to hear your comments on Tiafoe's serve. I think his toss is weird and limits his shoulder over shoulder movement.

    • @dougtennis5147
      @dougtennis5147 2 роки тому +4

      Good analysis, the only thing I will say is that the way the "tip dippers" are defeating the potential tension by letting their wrists collapse (which results in the tip dip) which releases all the tension and produces an extremely loose hand, wrist and arm through contact. This is how the speed is produced, but I notice that when they "miss" or don't hit it clean that they will almost just whiff the ball or overspin it. It requires perfect timing to hit cleanly. But I agree that this approach just breaks down under serious pressure.

    • @TennisUnleashed
      @TennisUnleashed  2 роки тому +8

      All good insights Wally. Fun fact. In 2014 when I was still working for USTA Player Development, Frances was training with the USTA. Jose Higueras tried to eliminate all the extra movement from his forehand by hitting serves at him while being up at the net to serve. He was trying to see if he could get Frances to be late on the shot. He did this for what seemed like hours. We also filmed his stroke that day and sat down and analyzed it. It was almost "impossible" to get Frances to be late or have issues on his forehand even with the technical deficiencies.
      As we sat down to review the film, it was clear that Frances has freakish hand speed and could adjust in almost any situation. Frances didn't want to change his technique and hasn't to this day. I witnessed a similar situation with Madison Keys in 2014, her coach from USTA Player Development got her to hit a much shorter ATP style forehand in practice, but she didn't like it and quickly abandoned it. Her shorter ATP style forehand never saw the light of day in a tournament match.
      I've been fortunate to do work for a lot of tour players, many of them are reluctant to make technical changes. You have to prove the change is beneficial, they have to believe you, they have to be comfortable with the change and then actually use it on the match court. Not easy to do once they're adults and have full control over their game.
      I'll analyze his serve, it's definitely unique.

      @@TennisUnleashed I would add that Tiafoe’s leg strength and improved movement allows him to have the bigger forehand backswing. The biggest problem I see is ‘over-hitting’; he is working on his touch and this has improved his strategy and success rate.

      Excellent observation. Musetti is definitely another one. It works for Tiafoe but I think Musetti should change his technique. It consistently causes problems for him on the run, when he's lacking time and he's lacking power on that side. Tiafoe gets away with it because of his hand speed.

      Liam. Permission is not needed under copyright law within fair use. People have "taken" my footage and used it in their UA-cam tennis videos.....Netflix took clips I shot in 2013 of Mardy Fish and used them in the documentary they made on him as well as the promotional trailer they made for the documentary. Nobody from Netflix contacted me or got my permission to use them in their documentary.

      9 years ago I was asked to review his forehand with Jose Higueras who was trying to change his technique. I said have you been able to change it? The answer was no. I said then leave it be. And as you said, now he’s top 10 in the world.
      You change technique in a couple scenarios.
      1) Injury prevention
      2) Performance gains
      3) The technique is a limiting factor with certain types of shots that are being exploited by other players.
      Frances is now top 10. The question is…..has that forehand hit its ranking ceiling? We’ll find out.
