      My grandparents were greek and polish. And great grandparents from Greece.

    This cake is not Greek, it is not Turkish, this cake is Egyptian

      It has some variations. The Greek and Egyptian cultures have strong ties.
      A lot of food is really similar.
      Turkey used to be part of Greece so similar recipes there as well. It’s because of the region the countries are in.
      Think of it as Greece and Egypt were besties at one point.
      And many families have their own variations.
      My family uses walnut and simple syrup. We don’t use mastic or borax.
      It’s why you can go to a different greek restaurant and have a different experience every time.
      And the best are the ones with the yaiyai’s cooking in the back.
