I was honored to be a part of this excursion. Just an amazing day on the rails. The first (and looks like ONLY) time I have been east of Jamestown on the main.
My Grandpa owned a property just off the hwy between Jimtown and Sonora. The Sierra tracks skirted the property on one side just above on a rocky cliff. We used to watch the occasional train chug by now and then. What a sound.
Feather River RR No. 2 is a three-truck Shay built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1922 for the Hutchinson Lumber Co., in Oroville, CA. It was used to haul Logs trains for the Feather River railroad. When the Feather River dieselised, #2, along with two other Shays, #1 & #3, became standby power. In 1964, the Pacific Railroad Association chartered the #2 & #3 for a final railfan excursion down the eighteen mile line from the Feather Falls mill to the Western Pacific mainline and then back up the 5½% grade to the mill. The railway was abandoned in 1967 after flooding of a portion of its line by Oroville Dam, and #2 was donated to the State of California. In 1976, it moved to Railtown, where it continues to operate hauling excursions. Now that I look back on videos of #2, it really sounds like she isn't firing on all cylinders, literally. Hope when she gets overhauled, she sounds like a proper Shay again.
She has been out of service since about 2012-2013, not sure of exact date. The engine needs major repairs, and may be repaired in the future, but when is anyone's guess. It will take some major fund raising to get it done.

What a great train ride! And that train whistle was extraordinarily Fabulous!. Thanks so much for the video. Big big fun that trip, to be sure!

I rode behind 2 a few times before her overhaul, it may have been bad sounding, but what a machine!

I agree. That really doesn't sound good. Im shocked that they ran it.
It ran on two cylinders for years. The third cylinder was repaired a couple years before the locomotive went out of service
The Black Smoker... it is a Bad fireman on the plate😢
the shay locomotive is my favorite type of locomotive
When that nervewrecking belling not be ...😢
now that is a fine looking engine. is it still running?
The bell is nervewrecking 😢
Wow, the valve timing is really screwed up.
I'm pretty sure it literally isn't running on all three cylinders... Really makes me cringe only hearing four chuffs per revolution.
2001 or 2005? I’ve seen you write comments about this trip saying 2005.
Chuff timing is pretty badly off. Hope the fixed that since.
More whistle than engine sound...
...but a great machine!
That gearing type is super odd looking not a normal one you imagine seeing the yime
"Yime"?
Do shays get wheel slip?
Yes they can. But if they get a lot of slip then either hold on or bend over and grab your ankles.
???
Wonder when this shay last ran???

@@bpeachee Yeah, I mean who knows what engine is gonna return next since 3 is gonna be pulled for her next rebuild in 2025
@Master Dooku Ik I heard
@Master Dooku It was announced in some update railtown 1897 made on one of their sites back in March.
@@evanf1293definitely new tubes and flus since the heavy replacement of boiler and tender cistern are all completed.
Sounds almost like a Pennsy 3-Chime.
Maybe it does almost sound like a Pennsy 3 Chime! I don't know what kind of whistle that was!
brian falzon My guess would be a Crosby 3-Chime.
Okay, thanks!
Actually it might be an old L&N Crosby 3 chime like the one on L&N #152, SP #2353, and Feather River Short line #8

I think you mean Sierra 3. The locomotive featured in 1957 show Casey Jones
