I was at this game, watching from somewhere near the half-way line, and must have been sitting very near the camera which filmed the action featured here. I was a young and naive Leeds supporter at the time. Remember seeing "the save" by Dickie Guy, but this video demonstrates that Guy made a number of other - much more impressive - saves during the match.
What I did not realize as a young lad was how dirty that Leeds team were - ruthless & quite violent, to be frank (but not Bough).
The fairly recent movie, "The Damned United" is well worth a watch if you can cope with the "earthy" language.
I was there , managed to get a spot close to half way line and managed to see all the action , big crowd to watch an expected slaughter, it was like the Alamo at times Guy was amazing , got in way of everything
This is the FA cup, not the big fat teams now who make 9,10,11 changes, Wimbledon drew with 11 household names here, in some cases, legends, wonderful stuff. Great memories waxed by the wonderful Keith Macklin, 'The corner, the header, THE SAVE!.......we used to chuck all this stuff up at school on mondays..
A definitive "old fashioned cup tie". Great commentary from Keith Macklin cranking the excitement up even further. The "I don't believe it!, he's not human!" line should be given folklore status, although I am sure that with any Wimbledon fans of a certain age , it probably already is.
Well Dickie Guy never got his big league move, in fact he ended up playing at my home town club Maidstone. I remember seeing him play for The Stones when we lost 4 - 2 to Exeter in the FA Cup third round, having beaten Gillingham 2 - 0 at their own ground (Priestfield) in round 2. He also played in Maidstone's cup match against Charlton, which went to a replay and featured a famous fist fight between Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan - both playing for Charlton. I am sure Dickie has great memories of all his cup runs.
I was there... with my Mum n Dad in the Lowfields seats.... couldn't believe we didn't beat them on the day.
As a youngster in the 70's I loved soccer, especially Leeds Utd, but needed this clip to remind me of the heroics of Wimbledon's legendary keeper Dickie Guy! But of course, a few years later, a certain Dave Beasant would appear on the scene for Wimbledon in an even greater achievement against Liverpool in the FA's Ultimate Prize!

We had Dickie Guy at Maidstone Utd in the early 80s . In non league terms , we had signed a legend .
Stupidly exciting and a great atmosphere.
as a leeds fan of close to 50 years i remember this but not as well as i thought It must have been the worse penalty Peter Lorimer ever took that said some of the saves Guy made were amazing Also i had forgotten how gracious and kind the Leeds players were to Guy at the final whistle still MOT
Keith Macklin was a great commentator, and should mentioned up there with the legends that are Davies and Moore. Knew his Rugby League too.
We rmbr Colchester the biggest Cup upset ever as this was Leeds in 1970, in 1975 the Leeds team now was fragmenting & it was in decline despite the European Cup final.

Back when the FA Cup really meant something to every club in the country. It has been devalued by the rediculous amount of money in The Premiership and the attitude of the rich clubs who are only interested when it looks as though their money won't buy them the Premiership or (so-called) Champion's League trophies that season.

Poor penalty from Lash Lorimer - shot straight at Guy. Dave Donaldson was also an airline pilot. Anyone fantasise what a match between Revie's Leeds at their most "professional" and the Crazy gang would be like?

And 13 years later I was at Wembley to see Wimbledon beat league champions Liverpool to win the FA Cup. The stuff of fairytales!
I was in the Gelderd end, 9 yrs old stood on a stool. 46,230 in the ground, the excitement, emotion, the tight packed crowd...it was all too much for me & I remember being in tears! I also remember the South stand was only opened at the bottom, no seats in the top tier. But such was the size of the crowd some fans were put in the top but standing. When the FA cup was massive!
I was there too, in the cop aged nearly 7 yrs and also stood on a stool. If I remember rightly the Wombles (men dressed in Womble suits) came on the pitch before the game started. Fell asleep on my Dad's shoulder half way through the 2nd half, stood up on the stool, held up in the upright position by the 12,000 fans crammed into the cop. Amazing how you never forget your first match no matter how young you are!
Just think how much this classic game would have been ruined had VAR been around then - no continuity whatsoever & every "close" decision scrutinised endlessly...
Football is no longer football, I've got Amazon Prime & enjoyed the tennis, no more as it's Prem Football, I watched a goal scored & the commentator raved about it, but not one defender tackled. Tackling has gone, no great sliding tackles, It's like basketball defending. A joke. At least rugby is still rugby as they've not destroyed it's soul as football has.
6:44 I presume it's Frankie Gray having a kick at the poor non-league player as the ball runs out. He was warming up for Uli Hoeness in Paris.
Sunderland '73 Cup Final all over again, Leeds steam rollered them but the goalie had the game of his life.
I'm pretty sure Leeds won the replay but if Lorimer had done what he normally did and blasted the penalty, Guy would not have saved it. For some reason Lorimer decided to try and place it. ( twat! )
Fair play to Dickie Guy though, a great performance and he was definitely man of the match, without him Leeds would have won 3 or 4 nil.
Yes we won the replay which was played at Crystal Palace (moved from Plough Lane due to demand) in front of more than 45,000! Deflected Johnny Giles shot. I remember listening to it on the radio. Funny how I can remember great detail from games 40+ yrs ago, but can't remember who even won the cup last year.
These days they would call it park the bus.
Non-league team versus the reigning league champions, who also reached the European Cup final this same season, and every player an international...so what were Wimbledon supposed to do? Try and out-play them?

Asking a non league player if they would play pro is like asking someone if they want a pay rise . Bit silly i thought.
Maybe so but worth considering that when the Dons were elected to the League in 1977, another player from that game (midfielder Ian Cooke) chose not to go pro & left the Dons to carry on his banking career while playing non-league elsewhere.
@Jonathan Hope Not really. Many non--league semi-pro players earn decent wages in their full time jobs and would only earn substantially more if they were pro with the very biggest teams. 90% of pros in the 70s were on unexceptional wages. Even now, pro players at most League 1 and League 2 clubs are not earning fortunes.
Yes, I clearly remember that even a couple of Division 3 sides had part time players back then.
