Okay, hear me out. Percy, albeit selfish and immature, was in high school so her not picking up on indicators that Sam liked her, I felt, was normal for someone that age. Especially a girl who already struggled with self-esteem. So her cheating on Sam with the first person that showed her affection made sense since she thought he was being unfaithful. I mean, imagine someone you're obsessed with goes to a place he kept secret from you, cuts off communication, and on top of that you hear him partying with a girl over and over again when he's not a party guy. Immediate red flags and chaotic fear response. As well, when she freaked on Delilah, I felt that it was pretty obvious that she had a misplaced anger moment. She felt so guilty about cheating on Sam with her brother and then losing him because of it. She never got over him. With that said, an emotionally mature person would then go apologize to her best friend and clear it up. I think she was also always jealous of and threatened by Delilah so I'm sure that did not help the situation. Hearing he tried to get with her must have been incredibly painful on top of all of her other emotions about Sam. Anyways, just my two cents in. I see everyone hate on her but I had a soft spot for her.
Oooo that’s a really great point! It also definitely fits into the “second chance” part of the book. She grew from when she was a teenager for sure and it’s a good thing she tried to make amends. I do still think she has mean girl vibes 😭 but your opinion is so valid.
i personally hated percy,i'm a very character driven reader and percy grated on my nerves..she was never there for Sam like never. You are so right about the delilah scene..i literally wanted to throw the book when percy did that..like girl how much worse are you gonna become. I couldn't give a rat ass about her apology to delilah as well as sam, both of them were half assed attempts at it. I wanted percy to grovel a bit more. I think it is okay to not be that harsh on a fmc but I think topics like cheating/infidelity are so sensitive especially when you go around and do it in the family of your partner. I think sam and charlie as well delilah all deserve better than percy. Happy to know I wasn't the only one who felt that percy would bully me..she literally reminded me a mean girl at my school. Shes a good writer, but the main conflict was so strange, i didnt like it at all. And yeah, they all came out looking insufferable and annoying. It just needed a different conflict. And yeah, that whole delilah plot made me feel so sad. I just felt sad for delilah at the end of the book. She lost a friend for 12 years and then she only got the apology when Percy found Sam again. What. Why did it take so long to apologise lol
