This is about Bestop's latest version of SuperTop. It's basically the version 2. Check out Bestop's Supertop Truck 2 here: bit.ly/2DPwUhf I had a hard shell so I know from my experience the advantages and disadvantages of both. Hope you like the vid and don't forget to subscribe!
My Softopper has served me well. Doubles as my sleeping quarters when camping/overlanding. I have a std bed like you do, but with a DAC camper top tent rear attachment, put the tailgate down and it encloses the rear portion. Allows you to sleep the full length of your body.
Rob Daman yup, 3 yrs. Recently uploaded a 3 yr update on my channel. Holding up well. Only problem I’ve had is the stitching on right side zipper unraveled a bit.
Great video Rob. Soft shells while gaining in popularity now. Are not new. These had a short lived success in the 80s during the mini truck phase. However today’s more modern designs do offer a lot more over the older designs. Personally I think your hardshell looked better on your truck and certainly had more functionality. I don’t think I can get past all of the leaks though. Thanks for keeping your reviews honest and unbiased.
Like the honest reviews. I just subscribed. I’ll watch more of your stuff moving forward. You seem honest and not bought out by sponsors. I own a 2020 TRD OffRoad, I’m currently debating the soft top vs Hard shell vs Bed rack system right now lol. Planning my next project. This video is 3 years old, do you still run the soft top?
What an honest review, thank you so much. I'm thinking of trading my 2018 Soft top Miata for a Tacoma and definitely would love a shell. Would likely go for a metal or carbon one.
Thank you Rob. A couple riding buddies had these on their trucks when I was in the Sierras some months back. Pretty slick. You can haul your bikes and quickly fold it back to sleep in. Thanks for the detailed review.
We bought a slightly used 2015 Frontier recently with 30K miles that came with a matching color fiberglass topper. We mainly use it for camping since its difficult to remove the shell for hauling. It definitely looks better than a soft topper ( almost like an SUV) and we didn't see any moisture in the first rain that we experienced . We bought a canvas end capper so we can extend the tailgate down with the back window upwards for more leg room.
Looks cool just cant leave valuable things there overnight. Hey man my 2016 is doing something weird the traction light goes in sometimes as im turning and if im hitting bumpy curves it feels and makes a noise as if it were slipping . Any idea what it might be ? Thanx
our tire is skipping so the truck is trying to compensate with ABS which is making the noise. Stomping on a wet surface straight line will do the same thing. Check your tire tread depth and for even or odd wear
That is just Toyota's really conservative traction control. It goes off in 4WD or if you turn it off with the switch. Guessing you notice a loss of power as well. Really annoying on my Tundra.
It'll fit but the tailgate opening will be different and I'm not sure if there will be a gap. You could search maybe Tacoma forums for feedback They make a version 1 that's different with windows but the frame is different. It will fit your 2011. amzn.to/3OTUWvf
Crazy idea.. Cant tell from vid, but would this work/mount with hardcover tonneau? Have diamond back on mine and was thinking if added this, I'd have storage under ,hard tonneau for protection and use as sleeping pad and if it works that top in place of getting RTT .Thoughts?
Awesome review! Im looking to get either a besttop or a softtopper for my tacoma. Im having a hard time deciding on one. Ill be using it for the occasional camp in and would like to get whatever one will keep my the most dry. Any recommendations?
Bestop now owns Softopper. These are the only "main" soft tops available. If you think you're going to open back often the Bestop is better. Softopper flap needs to be rolled up every time you drop the tailgate. Rest is more of a cosmetic preference. Both are good materials.
Great Review!! Just got ‘20 TRD off-road long bed, I’m considering a soft top for it, what sold You on Bestop vs. Softopper mainly? I like the there is no Velcro strips on the paint and no flaps between cab and bed on Bestop product. Awesome looking Tacoma!! Love the retro graphics!
There are 2 other companies that make them as well. Both more expensive than the softop and besttop. Can-Back and Fas-top. I think Can-Back is the nicest on the market.
Rather than "Honest Thief" you ought to use the term "Lazy Thief" since it is more accurate. Most people are lazy, and only do what is easy, and that is a good thing for us when it comes to thieves. If you/we make it harder for them to steal, then a lot of times they won't bother.
I had one on my Colorado.. The back flap ripped by the zippers and some of the hardware didn't hold up. They sent me another soft top, but I ended up trying to sell it for dirt cheap without luck, and then threw mine out. In hindsight, I would have went with a hard top. Mine held up for a little less than a year. I did like it before it started failing. Hope this helps someone else decide if it is right for them or not.
Sounds like you had a rare bad experience. The overwhelming majority of Bestop owners have nothing but great things to say on the versatility and durability of the Supertop, original and version 2.
I really wish they would make it flush against the rear window. Looks like absolute crap if you ask me. And also that it doesn't flush to the rear of the tailgate. Im waiting for a better design.

I don't remember them in the 80s. It was all about those snap on tonneaus that I recalled.
You know I'm always changing up so you never know 😉

I no longer have the truck but the new owner still runs it and parks outside
What an honest review, thank you so much. I'm thinking of trading my 2018 Soft top Miata for a Tacoma and definitely would love a shell. Would likely go for a metal or carbon one.

The hard shell still leaks, just FYI.

Thanks for watching and the feedback 👍
Great videos, thanks for your honest review. I had a hard shell and a tonneau top in the past and will buy a soft top ( Bestop).
Glad it was helpful!
I like your classic graphics
thanks

Ya I bought a Softopper and was going to install until i went hard.

Does your truck do the same thing ? I just replaced my tires less than a month ago but the old tires were worn evenly

What rims do you have on your truck and why did you go with this over the soft topper nice truck.

Bestop's was a brand new product at the time and I always like to try new stuff.
Can you open the tailgate without unzipping the back window?
Yep

Can’t find any answers but will this fit a 2011? Doesn’t have it as option on website but curious if it’ll still work .. cheers

Do the DIY video on the installation please 👍🏻🤞🏻🙏🏼
I know the front tinted window comes off. But does the other window (the one facing the sliding rear window.) Come off?
no that window doesn't. you can see the install in this video ua-cam.com/video/cPnKhBf-Ujc/v-deo.html
can show the function of the rear wheel carrier? thks
On my video list.
Is this noisy on road trips? Flapping or humming sounds at 65mph + ???
Nope
What does one do with the back window and sides when the top is folded down?
There's a pouch in the front you can insert everything
Do you have any recommendations soap, cream to wash away water marks on windshield. My window is stained with water mark pretty bad.
on the plastic window? try vinegar.
@@RobDaman back passenger window

It wouldn't fit. The diamond back takes up the same space as bestop rails
Great video. What are you filming in the rain with?
Samsung s10 plus. I have a S20 Ultra now
Great review but I think the honest thief should be called the lazy thief! Loved the info!
I'll rename to theif of convenience 😂
@@RobDaman ahh perfect!
My truck came with the factory cover. Will this still work? Did your truck have a factory cover?
Hi. No it won't because it takes up the same top portion of the bed
How do you like your softop without the windows on the sides? How’s the visibility?
No problems whatsoever. I never notice
Even at the mall? 😂👍🏻
Especially there
Where did you get the colored decals on the side??
local shop. here's the vid ua-cam.com/video/Zn1ClaCLK6Q/v-deo.html
Before your lift what tire/rim size were you running?
These in this vid
ua-cam.com/video/p1zDYOGCwnk/v-deo.html
This was good to see. Maybe next a vid where you try sleeping in the back on a camping trip.
Hey, how would I go about getting those side stripe? Thank you
I got them done locally. here's the vlog about it
ua-cam.com/video/Zn1ClaCLK6Q/v-deo.html
Ok thanks. I commented on another one of your most recent vid because I thought you wouldn’t notice this. Thanks again
What happened to your decked system, not like it?
Well that's another video 😂. It's still a good unit

@@RobDaman Yeah, hopefully it does me well when camping in the back. Ill post on Tacoma world to show my set up and camp gear if interested.

Rob, where did you those 3 colored decals?

@@RobDaman thanks!
There are at least two more manufacturers of soft toppers, FasTop and Outlander.

both are great tops and Bestop now owns Softopper as well.
Bestop has an advantage that the rear doesn't need to be detached to drop the tailgate.
@@RobDaman I can drop the tailgate without opening the rear window on my softopper. 2 years and still water tight, 303 keeps it looking brand new.
I have the same top for my long bed and mine does not sit so far forward on the bed, its only maybe a inch from the back of the tailgate.
interesting
Is there a way to install headache rack?
nickyrr78 bestow needs the rails so the rack would need to be flat and be outward of the bed to clear.
Excellent review thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

sorry to hear that. It sounds like you had their original version. Unsure on the improvements on v2.

Thanks 👍
2wd or 4wd?
4wd manual
You have that front seal wrong it goes on the outside of your bed
Anyone put besttop on T100?
Out of sight out of mind is the honest
please do the DIY video, I'm especially curious how the taillight wiring harness is installed. Thanks!

Check out softopper brand. 👍
No more boring videos please
Ya have soft-topper and honestly should have spent more and bought a hard top camper... regret the purchase
What's the worse issue with a soft top you've had?
That's just like your opinion dude.
Looks like a terrible fit, .....especially on rear. Heatgun probably would've helped with install.
Your hard shell Was 200lbs? Omg
Yep. Really close to it. Took 4 people to move it.
Decked is 220 lbs empty
Softtopper beats the shit out of Besttop. The besttop rivets break and it will leak without seam sealer.
Seam sealer is necessary on Softopper too. Last year Bestop purchased Softopper so now they're under 1 umbrella.
Thanks for chiming in👍
I don’t see the point of a soft top
Looks cool
It folds down, and is removable. The military has been using them for over 100 years or so.
Good. Don't buy it.
