The operational-strategic exercises of the army and navy of the USSR were held from September 4 to 12, and for many decades remained unsurpassed in terms of the number of forces and means involved. Victory over the enemy, according to the idea of ​​the Soviet military leaders, was achieved without the use of nuclear weapons. Experience, planning, communication are the three key components of Zapad-81.

Zapad-81 showed the Western world such a military ram with a red star on the hull, which, in simple terms, was simply too tough for the NATO bloc.
The main factor due to which "West-81" was rated by foreign experts as "extremely successful in the event of the outbreak of hostilities" was the use of modern weapons and equipment to the limit. Western "partners" once and for all, it became clear that even without the use of nuclear weapons and their destructive power, the Soviet Union was able to pacify any aggressor.
