  • Hello everyone. I am Dr. Abhijeet and I have done my MD from MAMC, New Delhi.
In this video I talk about the pros and cons of anaesthesia as a branch and what are its future aspects.
Some of you wanted to know more about the monetary aspect. It depends on your experience , specialisation as well as location where you will be working.
    1. SR just after completing MD/DNB: 90k to 1.2 LPM in delhi along with this you can do freelancing which may fetch you 5k to 6k a day. In other states it’s less but the opportunities of freelancing is more. As SR on an average you can easily earn 1 to 1.5 LPM.
    2. Consultancy after MD/DNB: It starts from 1.3 to 1.5 in metros with experience. But if you go tier 3 cities where the demand is high you may get as high as 1.8 to 2 LPM. One of my senior has joined the consultancy after 1 year of SRship in a tier 3 CT for 2.5 LPM with only MD degree. The earning increases with your experience and how you deal in private and corporate world. In government, salary is fixed and you all can search through the internet. If you do private with only MD/DNB, the capping goes at 3.5 to 4.5 to max 5 LPM.
    3. Consultancy after DM/FNB or super specialisation: It usually starts from 2.2 to 2.5 LPM for anaesthesia and 2.5 to 3.5 LPM in critical care. That also varies with location. One of my senior has just joined in Kolkata after DM critical care from SGPGI and he is getting 3.5 LPM in a reputed private hospital. Usually with 3-5 years of experience it goes to 4 to 5 LPM and more. For pain medicine, it may be less initially but as you get more patients it increases day by day. There is an esteemed pain physician who has 5 pain clinics in Delhi-NCR only. So entrepreneurship is also an good option along with clinics like other branches.
    4. In Middle East it starts from 3 to 4 LPM after 2 to 3 years of experience and goes up to 15 LPM. If you have super specialisation it will start from 5 to 6 LPM and can go as high as 20 to 25 LPM.
All these figures may vary from state to state and case to case. But more or less this remains the same in northern and middle part of the country. In the southern part the starting ones are little low but again there’s lot of scope for freelancing which can fetch you around 2 to 2.5 LPM within a couple of years.
There are some top bosses who are not only heading the department but managing the administrative work also. They are earning way more. I know some of the senior consultants who are earning in the range of 15 to 25 LPM and the highest one of them in an around of 30 LPM. Unfortunately I can not share there names and contacts on the social platform without there permission which I couldn’t get from them. So I really don’t know how the give proofs of income here.
But guys money will come in every branch if you excel. So love and passion for the branch is important and money making is an art which you can very well see from UA-cam itself.
Coming to EDAIC: It’s a licensing examination where Indian graduates are eligible. It’s being conducted in 2 parts. After 2nd part you can work in UK and some part of EU. It has good recognition value in Indian private sector and Middle East. The salary also increases proportionally with these.
EDIC: It’s for critical care only. It’s similar to EDAIC but non licensing. It has good value in private sector of India, Singapore, Middle East as well as in some of EU countries.
For US, if you want to get certified residency and fellowship, you have to go through USMLE as far as I got know. There are some non approved programmes which you can get and put in your CV. I couldn’t gather much on USMLE.
    Extra edge:
In India, there’re some good colleges for Anaesthesiology which you can get through NEET. Some of them are
    1. MAMC
    2. Seth GS Mumbai
    3. SGPGI Lucknow
    4. SMS Jaipur
    5. VMMC
    6. UCMS & LHMC
    7. TNMC, Grants & LTMC
    9. BJMC
    10. KGMC & BHU
There are some good private medical colleges also and central institutions (old ones) are some of the top notches.
Lastly, what Imeant for entrepreneurship is that as an Anaesthesiologist you have to work in every places of hospital. So you will be accustomed how an OT, ICU, EMERGENCY, WARD, STERILISATION DEPARTMENT, RADIOLOGY SUIT works. If you are interested to put something of your own, you can get a good grip on the logistical issues and designing. A medicine guy won’t get a good exposure of OTs and simultaneously a surgical resident won’t get a good exposure of ICUs. As an Anaesthesiologist you can run both by making a good team although the same is possible for other people if they are interested enough.
These are some of the additional info I could gather for you. I’m extremely sorry that I can not personally help each and every one of you as I have my MD final examinations in 2 weeks time. Still you can put your comments here. I will try to answer if I have one.
Thanks a ton again friends and best of luck for your upcoming journey.

One thing i do strongly agree is that
anesthesiologist are always unsung heroes even surgeons who are closed to anesthesiologist never encourage them how they deal a critical patient . We are an we'll remain as unsung till sun sets forever.

Thank you for guidance sir. There were a few myths and doubts about anesthesiology which if you could answer would be great.
    1. Is it true that CRNA( Nurse Anesthetists) are replacing MDs in US. Is it a threat to future of MDs in terms of jobs and earnings since CRNA will work for half the price .
    2. Is there any role Artificial intelligence in this field in near future like Radiology
    3. This might seem stupid but I really want to know. I never enjoyed reading pharma. Does that mean I won't enjoy anesthesiology too ?
    Regards and thanks sir
