AlterBridge number 1 for me! Out of the ashes of Creed, Mark Tremonti worked on his lead guitar playing 24/7 365 for a few years and called upon Mayfield Four lead singer and guitarist, Myles Kennedy to form his new band! Two guitar attack with killer riffs, solos, vocals and harmonies! They quickly shook off that Creed 2.0 sound after their first album; and found their own distinctive awesome sound , which is a mix of modern metal and classic rock. 20 years later - still going strong! Can’t get enough!
Hughes-Thrall is an enjoyable melodic, funky rock album. With Pat Thrall’s impressive guitar sonics and Glenn’s bass and vocals, the musical chemistry is there to behold. Allegedly the chemical excesses put a dampener on the follow up album. Demos of which languish on You Tube. They should have done more together. I would take a Pat & Glenn reunion over any other more recent and critically celebrated band projects that Glenn Hughes has been involved with.
Badlands were criminally underrated. The 3rd studio is superb even though it wasn't 'finished'. Great choices all round.
Awesome band - totally agree!
Barry Goudreau's solo project that sounded more like Boston than Tom Shultz later work.
His work in RTZ, Orion the hunter, Ernie and the Automatics, and Barry Goudreau's Engine Room. He's made some great music since he left Boston.
UK, an offshoot of King Crimson. Bruford, an offshoot of UK. All kinds of offshoots in the Canterbury scene.
Would Fruupp be one from the Canterbury Scene?
I personally think the first UK album is one of the best albums ever recorded. Every musician is at the top of their game - and the vocals are fantastic. John Wetton sounds even better then when he was in KC.
GTR ( 1986 ) Steve Hackett ( GENESIS- guitarist ) + Steve Howe ( YES )
STEVE HILLAGE ( Guitarist with GONG in the 1970's )..
His albums
"FISH RISING" 1975
" GREEN " 1979
several more!
STEVE HACKETT ( Guitarist, Genesis 1971-1977)
Steve left after realizing that the band generally did not want to record Steve's band contributions
Since 1977, Steve left Genesis.
I think the elephants in the room are Led Zeppelin and Cream (offshoots of The Yardbirds)
Motörhead (offshoot of Hawkwind)
Mudhoney and Pearl Jam (offshoots of Green River)
Mr Bungle (they started before the connection but I still think they might count as a Faith No More offshoot)
Agents Of Oblivion (offshoot of Acid Bath)
Queens Of The Stone Age and Unida (offshoots of Kyuss)
The Mars Volta (offshoot of At The Drive-In)
A couple more, Stone Sour, Smith/Kotzen, Damn Yankees, Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe, Blades/Shaw, HSAS, The Circle, Alter Bridge, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, Chickenfoot, CSNY, Blind Faith, ELP, Bad Company, Asia, The Firm, Arcadia, Power Station, Arcade, GTR, Mike and the Mechanics, Alias, Tin Machine, Mr. Big, Traveling Wilburys, Slash's Snakepit, Mad Season, Velvet Revolver, Foo Fighters, Angels and Airwaves, Lynch Mob, The Dead Daisies, Black Country Communion, Hollywood Vampires. I can't believe I came up with this many/lol. Shows how much it's happened (at least in the rock world).
Great list Pete. Humble Pie, The Firm, Blind Faith and Asia would also make my list. Going to see "Becoming Led Zeppelin" today. Enjoy your weekend everyone! Cheers!
Actually Don Airey played keys on the first Michael Schenker album.
Anathema and the Weather Systems project with the Cavanagh brothers. You can't forget about that band, Pete.
Probably not offshoot in the truest sense. But IMO the Halford solo releases (Resurrection, Crucible, Made of Metal) are worth owning for sure. He had a killer band for those albums. The same band members were there for Live Insurrection, which is one of the best live releases ever. I don't think I've heard these mentioned in any of Pardo's videos, but I may have missed it. 😃
What about his Fight stuff? That counts as an offshoot
Very good stuff yeah
Down, offshoot of Pantera, C.O.C and Crowbar
Like a lot that Captain beyond and Fastway albums, thank you for introducing me to that stuff.Journey has a past members of the psychedelic band Frumious Bandesnatch (Valory & Tickner)
Seriously Scope CBeyond's first 2' releases: SelfTitled#1 & #2 Sufficiently Breathless, not a single weak track on either!😮 3rd one is Dawn something (?Explosion) & it's got some good stuff but somewhat uneven as they had 2(?3) different members... Their way later 2 releases both have some good/tight stuff as well( all are on YTube and or Ugg:Spotify).
Captain Beyond is in my Top 15 bands and I be a picky/critical being!😊
And Ansley Dunbar from John Mayall.
Pete great show!!! For some reason Captain Beyond would have been my number one. 😂
Great picks, Pete! I especially like the Badlands, Fastway, Rainbow, and MSG picks.
Humble Pie, Faces, ELP, Bad Company, The Flying Burritos, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Mudhoney, Blind Faith, Streetwalkers
Fun topic. A few which spring to mind for me:
Argent, from the Zombies
The Blackeyed Susans, from the Triffids
Blodwyn Pig, from Jethro Tull
Cavalera Conspiracy, from Sepultura
The Dead Weather, from the White Stripes and the Kills
Faces, from Small Faces
Godley & Creme, from 10cc
Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, from Oasis
Public Image Ltd and the Professionals, from Sex Pistols
It can be hard to discern between an offshoot band and a supergroup.
Arena, ex Marillion drummer + Clive Nolan of Pendragon.
Rainbow had to be high on this list. I saw the Deep Purple Mk.3 tour with ELO and Elf. We had no clue who Elf was, but when their set was over the consensus was: "Don't know who these guys are, but that little guy can fkn sing!"
JUNKYARD!
Off shoot from iconic hardcore/ punk band Minor Threat/ Dagnasty & Big Boys
WRATHCHILD AMERICA!
Off shoot from KIX
BBA!
Off shoot of Beck, Cactus/ Vanilla Fudge
ROSSINGTON COLLINS BAND and BLACKFOOT!
Off shoot of Skynyrd
SOD!
Off shoot of Anthrax & MOD
MERLE HAGGARD!
Off shoot of Buck Owen’s
SAMMY HAGAR!
Off shoot of Montrose
WAYLON JENNINGS!
Off shoot of Buddy Holly
I also came up with a list of 10. For my list, I'm naming 10 bands that were offshoots in the sense that they were taking a temporary sabbatical on their regular band/solo career in order to take part in a collaborative side project that's secondary to their usual thing. Unlike Pete's, these aren't guys that permanently left or got fired from their more notable bands. They are, in no particular order:
- A Perfect Circle
- Nailbomb
- Bad English
- Host
- Night Flight Orchestra (just released a new album, haven't listened yet but it's on my list)
- Cemetery Skyline
- Liquid Tension Experiment
- Tin Machine
- Hollywood Vampires
- Rebel Meets Rebel
A bit obscure this one as they never made a record. I did see them live in ‘86 though.
From Whitesnake- MGM. (Marsden Galley Murray)
From Dire Straits - The Notting Hillbillies (Mark Knopfler Guy Fletcher and Straits manager Ed Bicknell)
As an 80s kid, I'd throw Bad English, Arcadia, and The Power Station in there, even if they were all short-lived.
1. Rainbow (from Deep Purple/Elf)
2. Whitesnake (from Deep Purple)
3. MSG (from UFO)
4. Megadeth (from Megadeth)
5. Motörhead (from Hawkwind)
6. Alcatrazz (from Rainbow/New England)
7. Foreigner (from Spooky Tooth/Black Sheep)
8. Bad Company (from Free)
9. Gillan (from Deep Purple)
10. Cauldron (from Goat Horn)
Honorable Mentions:
Blue Murder
Warhorse
Badlands
Fastway
Waysted
The Firm
Derek and the Dominoes
Alter Bridge
Hughes/Thrall
Damn Yankees
U.K.
Shadow King
Bad English
Autopsy
Captain Beyond
The first 2 Fastway albums are killer. Saw them open for Maiden when they were touring the debut. Pretty sure it was Maiden.
It was - Piece off Mind tour - Fastway/Saxon/Iron Maiden
Great list!! White snake was definitely a trip... RIP Sykes
Hi Pete. Great list. One of my favorite is Metal Allegiance. Portnoy, Skolnick and Ellefson with a bunch of guests.
My Top 10
1.Asia
2.Whitesnake
3.Megadeth
4.Rainbow
5.Dio
6.The Vaughn Brothers
7.New Order
8.Fort Minor
9.Audioslave
10.Alter Bridge
The first (2) albums by Audioslave were pretty cool.
After Black Flag ended, Henry Rollins formed the Rollins Band, crushing punk / hard rock.
Great bands .I agree with you on megadeth catalog. I'm glad Dave put together megadeth
S.O.D. from Anthrax
Dismember and Carcass from Carnge
Entombed A.D. from Entombed
Last Chapter from Solitude Aeturnus
Abstakt Algerbra from Candlemass
King Diamond from Mercyful Fate
Oysterhead from Primus and Phish
QOTSA from Kyuss
Rollins Band from Black Flag
Nailbomb from Sepultura
Deep Purple family tree is a big healthy one. 🌴
Brave Belt and Bachman-Turner Overdrive are what Randy Bachman did after shockingly leaving The Guess Who. BB is unjustly forgotten, BTO needs no introduction.
Great topic, Pete! I was thinking particularly of Rainbow and Bad Company, given that both of them had noteworthy albums that turn 50 this year. But there are so many great spinoffs. I really need to go back and give those Badlands albums a fresh listen.
Asia. Yes, ELP, King Crimson.
Here’s my top 10
1. Alter Bridge
2. Rainbow
3. Gov’t Mule
4. Winery Dogs
5. Wings
6. Rossington/Collins band
7. Bad Company
8. Whitesnake
9. Humble Pie
10. Derek & the Dominos
Good choices. You mentioned Torme in Gillan, and also mentioned MSG, and it reminded me of another offshoot that kind of flew under the radar in the early 2000s. Band called Silver, which originally featured a lineup of Gary Barden, Bernie Torme, Don Airey, Michael Voss, and a young Marco Minnemann. 1st two albums are really good melodic rock with a proggy sci-fi edge. 3rd album still had Torme, then two more albums followed which weren't quite as strong but still very good. Highly recommend the 1st two. For Yes offshoot I would recommend YOSO Elements which featured Billy Sherwood, Tony Kaye, and Toto's Bobby Kimball.
Would have to think the Moog-Way album was lingering around the 20 mark. Alcatraz another good Bonnet project.
UK offshoot from the members of The Darkness. The Stone Gods who made an album called Silver Spoons and Broken Bones. Excellent album far better than anything The Darkness made. Saw The Stone Gods live twice and they were excellent.
Fun Video Feature!
1.Bad Company -2. Sea Level
3. Asia 4.Blind Faith
5.The Firm 6.- GTR-
7. Mike & Mechanics 8. UK
9. Bad English-10. The Law
Honorable Mention:
HSAS-(Hagar/Schon/Aaronsen/Shrieve) -Power Station
I was huge into Whitesnake when I was younger but with hindsight think Gillan had the better band & a fairly stable driving lineup for some years..... If you can find the (UK) radio 1, Friday rock show replays of Gillan at Reading festival - brilliant!
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Gamma Ray, Primal Fear or Damn Yankees
HSAS-Neil Schon, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Aaronson and Michael Shrieve. That one smokin' album what could have been.
Enjoyed this. You should look up Pete Frame's Rock Family Trees - does what it says - family trees of famous bands - what bands members came from and what bands they went to in a family tree style layout with short descriptions of each band. Used to appear in the UK weekly rock paper Sounds. Theres a couple of books which collate them. Out of date now but fascinating for older bands.
Woooo Captain Beyond mentioned 🔥🔥🔥 I thank this album for introducing me to the Allman Brothers Band lol
I'm surprised Motorhead didn't make the list since Lemmy was kicked out of Hawkwind. A couple others could be Paris, with Bob Welch and Wild Horses, with Brian Robertson and Jimmy Bain.
I thought Motorhead should have been mentioned too.
Got the Blue Murder & Badlands albums when they came out and played them incessantly. My soundtrack to 1989🤘🏻
2 bands I think of is 1. Pal Paice Ashton Lord 2. Rough Diamond David Byron from Uriah Heep.
Love these episodes Pete. Thank you. LTE- Govt MULE. Etc. 👍💯
the mule!
You forgot Motorhead Pete. Lemmy leaves Hawkwind and forms THE band!
Gillan was an amazing band
Great episode. ELP is a favorite of mine. Do they count? Of course a band being an offshoot of The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster.
Yep, they would count!
Fasyway is easily my favorite on this topic. Dave King had a great voice. Fast Eddie being the riff master. Saw em in 84.
And he become the singer in Flogging Molly....
Fun video, thank you! I wonder if you would consider Gamma an offshoot band? In any case love their albums to death.
I would!
Lots of other channels been doing this Pete yours was the best great choices
Surprised Pete didn’t mention the Dream Theater offshoot band Liquid Tension Experiment. The exclusion of the instrumental insanity of LTE - John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess & Tony Levin - may raise a few hackles in the DT community. Like Iron Maiden, the DT fan base is, how shall l put it… a tad robust. 😉
Good one. Yeah, couldn't remember or list every single one of them!
Will Badlands debut album and Voodoo Highway ever be available on streaming services like Pandora?
1. Motörhead (Hawkwind)
2. Megadeth (Metallica)
3. Rainbow (Deep Purple)
4. MSG (UFO)
5. King Diamond (Mercyful Fate)
6. Waysted (UFO)
7. Dio (Black Sabbath)
8. Warhorse (Deep Purple)
9. KK's Priest (Judas Priest)
10. Captain Beyond (deep Purple)
Whitesnake (Deep Purple), it had three members of Deep Purple, David Coverdale (1978-), Jon Lord (1978-1984) and Ian Paice (1979-1982).
@@lucone2937 Slide it In is a great Whitesnake album.
Great picks mostly! Esp Captain Beyond... Sea Level man> 5 releases w/ first 2 as close to masterpieces, 3rd is solid & final 2 have some gems too
Oops> Sea Level had 3 members of The Allman Brothers Band : Jaimoe on drums from original ABB lineup & Chuck Leavell keyboards/some vocals(hence moniker: Sea Level) & Lamer Williams who were both in 2nd incarnation/lineup debuting on Allman's Brothers and Sisters release circa '73. Sea Level's self titled debut was released in '76 followed by Cats On The Coast('77)/On The Edge('78, w Joe English on drums/Long Walk On A Short Pier & last release was Ballroom.
1 Megadeth
2 Dio
3 Gillan
4 Michael Schenker Group
5 Whitesnake
6 Rainbow
7 Atomic Rooster
8 KK's Priest
9 Humble Pie
10 Generation Kill
Fantastic idea for a video! Great list!
I put forth St. Paradise. A Ted Nugent spin off featuring Derek St. Holmes and Rob Grange plus Denny Carmassi.
Stuart Adamson left The Skids and created Big Country with Bruce Watson.
Great topic, Pete. Keep up the great work.
Ray Gillen sang with Rondinelli.. Teddy was my guitar teacher in the 80s on Long Island .. Great picks thanks for this video Pete
West, Bruce & Laing !!!
Very good last album of Fastway, dog eat dog, check it out
Hot Tuna
I would add Gov't Mule and Dickey Betts Band as great Allman Brothers Offshoots
Mike and the mechanics
Great run down!! You forgot Schon & Hammer and The Henry Paul Band. :)
Lynch Mob, Power Station, Arcadia, Arcade ,Missing Persons.
My favorite is Gov’t Mule probably, and Bad Company is right up there too
Two great choices!
Lynch Mob, first two real good
A few you didn't mention Pete:
1)Dio (kinda surprised that didn't make your honourable mentions at least).
2)Mr Big (Paul Gilbert from Racer X & Billy Sheehan fresh from a stint with DLR).
3)The Scream (Bruce Bouillet & John Alderete from Racer X, terrific hard rock)
4)Smith/Kotzen (Adrian Smith from Maiden & Richie Kotzen)
5)Bad Company (Half of Free with bits of King Crimson & Mott The Hoople for good measure)
6)Led Zeppelin (they were even calling themselves the New Yardbirds for a while, yes? no?)
There's probably a few more, but off the top of my head that's all I can come up with for now.
What is the difference between a super group and an offshoot band? Surprised Cream and Bad Company weren't mentioned but maybe there is a distinction and they aren't offshoot bands.
Oh Pete, how could you forget Bad Company???
Also the other Neal Schon offshoot band Hardline was pretty good. Rossington/Collins is another one worth mentioning.
Izzy Stradlin & the Ju Ju Hounds was way more interesting than GNR
Killer list. Tough one to argue. 👊🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
RTZ, Orion The Hunter
Dio would be my #1
Great list, Pete!
I'm going to go with some short-lived offshoots, or maybe more side-projects: Shadow King (with Lou Gramm and Vivian Campbell), Soulmotor (Brian Wheat from Tesla, Atomik Tommy M from UFO), MD.45 (Mustaine and Lee Ving), Forty Deuce (Richie Kotzen in a harder-rocking setting than usual).
Butt's Band , a truly amazing Doors' offshoot. First album is amazing.
Eric Singer played on the Eternal Idol lp.
Yep!
Pete is the professor's Picks Gone ? I have every single CDd That's On You Top 10
Gov't Mule tops my list.
Lots of them from CSN+Y, my favorite being Manassas. Also, I guess maybe New Order counts?
1. Led Zeppelin(Yardbids)
2. Journey(Santana)
3. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young(Buffalo Springfield)
4. E.L.O.(The Move)
5. Damn Yankees(Styx and Night Ranger)
6.Vandenberg(Whitesnake)
7. Heaven & Hell(Black Sabbath)
8. Waysted(UFO)
9. Bad English(Journey)
10. Little Feat(Mothers of Invention)
I'm surprised Zeppelin wasn't on Pete's list. Maybe he overlooked them?
@ Originally, Zeppelin was going to be called The New Yardbirds!
@@utvf68 Oh yeah, I forgot about that! I think they made the right decision with the name.
Ill put The Firm on this list. Didnt quite live up to expectations, but i liked them. Id love anything Rodgers is involved in
I feel the same way, I think they’re decent but I’ll listen to anything with Paul Rodgers
Good stuff, dude!
Does Blind Faith count?
Yes
Badlands
Faces
Gamma Ray
Gillan
Gov't Mule
Lets try these acts: West, Bruce and Laing, HSAS, BLT,Hindu Love Gods,Fotomaker,BBM, those are all I can think of off the top of my head Pete....
If I understand the concept my pick would be L.A. Guns
Pete, what about the Jethro Tull offshoot Bands. Also Chickenfoot, and others. Please do a another one.
Flying Burrito Brothers
Black Box Recorder
Magazine
CSN and CSNY
PIL
SOD
The Firm(Zeppelin, Bad Company)
Love The Firm,God I'm getting old, that was one of My favorites from high school 40 yrs ago
Pearl Jam
I just thought, how about an episode speaking about bands that had many line up changes, when you spoke of Megadeth...
