I remember this event well, since I was there (you can see me with the French delegation, guess which one I am).
The black card was not for the mask throwing, but for the saber smashing which we don't see in the video, since it is cut just before. The sword will bounce/slip and pass dangerously close to the kneeling woman (right of image). At 1:13 , you can discreetly hear the sound of the sword hitting the ground and see the spectators follow its trajectory with their eyes.
Thereafter, Bolade will write a letter of apology to the persons concerned for this unfortunate event.
At the very end of the original video (13:56), you can even see the sabre pass in front of the woman, which will not disturb her at all. Just like the rest of those present. Until the Italians noticed it 4 seconds later. (Ochiuzzi gets up and starts walking towards the referees)
Are you the guy in red with glasses? 🙂
Some of the attacks seemed pretty hard from the vid. The guy had a real attitude. You have to keep sportsmanship in the game. Fencing is not studio wrestling

This might take a while 😂
We can't see what he does afterwards but if that's all he did, that's definitely too harsh, especially when the FIE is so inconsistent with how they enforce rules on many things. Fencers throw their masks in excitement too but don't get carded. The FIE should really make clear what they allow and don't allow through communication and consistent enforcement. Also, i heard about Bibi from France throwing his weapon or something years ago, did he get suspended for that?
The biggest problem with our sport, IMO, is the wild and constant re-interpretation of the rules.
From what I have heard Bibi has a history of stomping on his mask. I think he was black carded in France before but not sure if he ever has been at an FIE event.
The addition of the Hell's Kitchen waterphone and Vine boom earned you an easy sub.
Lol imagine actually getting black carded at an international comp
By the book he probabley deserved it. But we all know how many times fencers dont get carded for doing even worse things. He politely finished the match, gave hand to oponent and cable to his teamate. Montano was throwing his mask around right after touches and didnt get carded. Tarantino the same we could go on…
Bolade did not keep to the rules: some punishment is fair. But there is no attempt to gain an advantage, disrespect an opponent, or express dissent to the ref.
Harsh.
Technically, the judgement is correct. But given the kind of mask-throwing I constantly see at epee when people win (and, I assume, at other weapons as well) I think it's kind of odd that he would receive a black card for this when those guys don't. Hell, I've seen masks flying onto other pistes without being carded, even at high-level tournaments.
I know, it might seem harsh, but it's the rule. Every fencer, even little kids, knows you never throw your equipment. It's a black card, always.
besides being a bit dangerous (understatement) .. if they stop people at the top level breaking the rules people in local comps will not be so stupid...
mind you if they had made vissali shorten her bib to regulation then we wouldn't all have the damn lame foil bibs... and only need 2 masks if you fence 3 weapons (one for sabre and one for foil and epee..lol)
The rule is pretty clear on throwing your mask. It’s harsh, but I wouldn’t argue against it.
Judgement calls, and why not
I agree that what Apithy did looks like a whole lot of nothing. Win or lose, I've taken my mask off and tossed in into my bag or off the strip, maybe not from so high up or definite swing of the arm. But I didn't put it down like putting a baby into the crib.
But the rule is clear, don't throw your mask, or any other equipment. He did it. If it didn't matter, he could have just put the mask down like it was a baby and be done with it.
So let's say the ref does nothing, or lets him off with a warning. Next guy does it, with just a little more vigor. This guy the ref cards. "But why? Apithy did the exact same thing and you let him off with a warning." And the ref could argue back that no, Apithy did not do throw the mask with as much vigor as this guy did. Will this answer fly? Are you going to measure the "vigor" of the toss? Of course not. So let it slide, and the next guy does it even more so. And on and on, reinforcing bad behavior till someone gets their head smashed. And when that happens the question will not be Why did the fencer do it? No, the question will be Why are fencers allowed to throw their masks, when someone is Obviously going to get hurt.
Yes it was harsh, but Apithy learned a valuable lesson, and I'd be really surprised if he ever did it again.
The weapon throw after the video ends is also a much worse thing as that could genuinely cause some harm, the small tip of the blade could easily hit someone’s eye or just hurt them in general. I agree with your take though, respect and safety are important to the core of modern fencing
It's not even the incosistency of their rule enforcement to me. I really don't think he should be black carded for something so undramatic and undisruptive.
In fencing, throwing equipment is considered one of the most disrespectful things one can do.
It just showed so little respect to his opponent, the audience, and the sport as a whole. I agree it’s harsh but it’s also an honor filled and very traditional sport, respect is important especially in a world cup
If those are the rules, it's what had to be. If the rule is wrong, change it.
Btw sabre is so much better now - not least because (other) rules are being enforced consistently.
It's almost de rigeur to throw your mask in the air when celebrating these days. Won Woo Young used to do it all the time. Tossing your mask away in disgust at your own performance is in no way any worse. Harsh. Very harsh.
Act right in public. Save your petty outbursts for when you are talking only to your dog. No one else loves you during that mess.
Unjust, disproportionally harsh.........and stupid. Period.
Unjust, disproportionally harsh nd unnecessary.
Faliure toshake hands is cause for a black card but he did shake. Was throwing his sword a little unsportsmanlike? Yeah but he's human, he was frustrated.
Lmao
The good ol days when racism was rampant. The number of clips you can find of Italian fencers throwing their masks and not getting any card....
italians.. gotta luv em...lol
Way to harsh. First of all fencers should be allowed to show emotions. Otherwise the sport is way too soft and not fun for watching!
They do show emotions. Even too much, someone might say. They always shout their lungs out, kicking and punching air, shouting impolite celebrations. Nobody bats an eye.
Throwing equipment? No fucking way. You *never* do that. Everyone would just look at you like you just killed someone. Which was actually my reaction watching the video, before it was pointed out.

Maybe something else happens off camera but the video just ends abruptly so it's hard to see.
This is not harsh enough. Imagine someone in kendo doing such circus, this would be a scandal. Olympic fencers are often shown as examples of bad behaviour, and even rules punish them for it, but no one enforces them, because they would have to suspend all sabre fencers in the world if they did. We have the power to get rid of such things.
good to see it applied... at that level it will make local fencers think twice before being tossers...lol
