HOODS ARE FOR LOSERS… that is all.

Hey I meet you at street car takeover ❤️
Just add a few more degrees of timing bro you're good. But also if you didn't already see my other comment, mark peck's performance chassis in Midland, TX, we can make you go straight across the roughest road you can imagine, and 4links are our specialty.
I'd personally keep the hood.... It looks really good with the hood
Hey you still went fast without a hood
I mean.........the hood currently has a 2-0 record for events won..... ;)
Damn skippy!
Well done, sir!
Im on your side hood wise just because it looks so good, hell not to mention you put a crapload of work into it!! Hoods ftw!!
Can't argue with results, or the resultant superstitions attached to them.
I remember the pain you went through to make that hood fit!! 💪🏼
Exactly, you don't mess with success. Except maybe 2 scoops to ram air through those turbos.
cleetus: "we're here purely for fun"
kevin: "DATA!!!" 😎
To Kevin data is fun
data!
Drives brick shaped cars on tracks, worries about wind tunnel performance. Classic Florida man.
Everyone clowning around in the wind tunnel
*Kevin staring intently doing math in his head *
I feel bad, because if you watched Kevins videos, when he was first trying to get the hood on, it didn't quite fit right. He ended up doing a shit load of work to drop the engine about 1 inch so that the hood would fit. I would keep the hood on just for that reason only!
Absolutely!
Disrespectful to toss it away.
Leave Leroy the no hood, no body panels people's favorite. Can't force every vehicle to be Leroy!
That was also for visability.
Yeh I agree, its cleeter's car but I think its terribly disrespectful and disappointing that he would ignore the guy that built the car.
he's joking guys, the hoods not going anywhere.
I feel like cleet is 100% just fucking around and loves and plans on sticking eith that custom hood
"The difference between Leeroy and this car is... a car"
That's gold
Lol.. leeeeeroy
Right on the money... So what you are saying is Leroy can enter twice?
They should put a clear body on Leroy
@@dertmatyui LOL! Like an RC car before you paint it...
I mean a Mercedes EQS has a drag coefficient of 0.20 so yes, a car.
“Glad you bought one with a body and paint job this time !” Huge roast on Cleetus 😂😂
The car looks way better with a hood on ! Can’t deny that
It doesn’t
@@jamestrost8412 It does

Everyone: wow so cool
Kevin: actually investigating how to Improve aero
He is all about data.
At least he was trying...
I was litteraly thinking about that too
Kevin was the kid in school who actually paid attention during the field trips.
Kevin is a mastermind, straight up.
Cleetus dislikes hoods so much that he didn’t know one purpose of a true cowl hood is to allow more airflow under the hood.😂😂😂 I love it lol
Cleetus - we don’t need a hood
Kevin - actually if you look at this contract you signed
😂 small print gets you every time
I’m honestly surprised that he didn’t slip that in there somewhere hoping mr lawyer (cleetus) didn’t read it that close
James with the 800+ lbs of LIFT force 😂 “that explains everything”
Had to LOL when Cleet said that's why the Nova pulls wheelies. He's not anywhere near 170 MPH at the 8th ;-)
@@jamesplotkin4674 I was about to say that as well....that lift is at speed ....not at launch...
All the ingredients for the real moon tune
@@jamesplotkin4674 Yeah you catching flight over backwards and rolling down track in a trash can if you pulling wheels at 170 in a chevy2. lol
All that front end lift is lifting the hood off the cars lol
"The lift is astronomical."
And absolutely no one was surprised by this.
Isn't it nice when the data confirms what you sorta already knew? Haha.
Would have at least been worth it if the drag wasn't astronomical also haha
It's an airplane.
@@tturi2 lift creates induced drag. You can’t have crazy lift without also having drag.
"Astronomical" was the perfect word to use. To The Moon!!!
Kevin's like a kid in a candy store - if i wanted a drag car building, i'd go see Kevin.
See what Cleetus is saying is hood doesn't make a difference, but what I am hearing is that a hood adds 30 more hp! XD
how much does it lose in ram air
@@davidlabossiere1905 actually if you ducted the turbo, it would likely get more ram effect.
the question is does ram air help the turbo or does it benefit from a low pressure area more?
@@frotobaggins7169 sounds like a question for a turbo engineer, that i am not

Who needs aero when you can just add Nitrous!
Said James.
Probably.
😂😂
That's it people pack it up, chloe just won the Internet for the day, come back and try again tomorrow 😂😂😂
Comment of the YEAR!
James has the prefect down force. "FOR A AIRPLANE" that's why it's so fast, the nova becomes weightless after launch. Lol
Could get dangerous down the track if the car get's upset at all and has low grip.
lol! it's actually really bad though...
Lol yeah pretty much weight reduction via areo
@@TheTyisawesome you never want lift from aero with a car tho
Wheelie James is his new name until the aero is fix.
Kevin - the only man that enters a wind tunnel with a base ball cap on and it stays on!
Kevin is very aerodynamic lol
Need to get the car running and Turbos spinning sucking air in and see how that changes that flow in front of them
That would be interesting to see. Though ram air into the turbos would be beneficial either way
Im curious to see if they can suck hard enough to change the aero right there. Like can they pull in harder than the air can be rammed. Need a Dyno inside a wind tunnel. Lmfao
@@ant1985ish there is a lot truth to that. The tires/wheels spinning also changes a whole lot of the aerodynamics and can change the drag and lift numbers drastically.
@@ant1985ish they can’t pull harder unless it’s a super charger which I don’t think they are? Only way reg turbos pull harder is with ram effect
@@mcbaited5455 you don't understand how turbos work.
It's cool to see you guys return to the same wind tunnel that Leroy was in
I’d imagine that there isn’t very many wind tunnels to choose from...
@@cmrnk3554 I was gonna say the same 🤣🤣
@Cutlass 87 I just started watching his channel at that time. He posted that video in my 11th birthday!
Totally agreed, and just how bad Leroy is.
Yeah!
They should of brought Ruby too
😎😎😎
20hp
James: "Thats a half pound of boost"
I love it
The turbo turbulation would probably be a little different if the turbos were actually sucking air. The air was being compressed into static impellers
Would that create enough low pressure to significantly lower downforce on the front? If so, would putting the intakes near the ground create downforce?
@@9HighFlyer9 I think his point was what effect the moving air would have with moving turbos. I doubt it would effect lift at all. most of the front end lift is likely coming from the front bumper as the air coming off the air dam tries to go over the bumper. you can see this in the smoke test. That and just the air going under the air dam and through the radiator. the turbulence is just drag.
1st law of aerodynamics is: It doesn't matter how you split the air, it's how you put it back together that's important!
Teardrop is the best shape if you are not going supersonic
The hood isn't the problem, it's that sharp drop off after the cab to the bed. Need a fastback body design.
Need to block off the grill like Tom Bailey, and get a chin splitter.
I was just at the zoo thinking there's no way a giraffe is aerodynamic and then I watch this video and I stand corrected.
"More bald eagles. Screw aerodynamics..."
I love this guy. 😄
Kevin is like the cool Dad we have all wanted
"I Don't Need Down Force Where I'm Going" has to be JackStands new shirt with the Nova riding the rear bumper 😂
lol *_UP FORCE_* with a pic of the Nova doing a 12 o'clock wheelie
Get this to the top so ol cleet can see it
Sorry but Mullet looks completely average with the hood off, hood on is so much cleaner.
Haha I see you've been watching for awhile now!
20 horsepower cleaner. PLUS we don't know the drag throughout the pull. Was there a lot of drag at 70 mph that could slow the car? Or perhaps at 90? Mullett is only going 170 for 1/10 of a second. I say keep the hood on.
I think it is a total slap in the face, Kevin put his heart, soul, into creating one of the cleanest, fastest, bad-ass street machines ever. Might be different if Cletus said, Kevin, build me a hoodless hot rod and Kevin put a hood on it. Everyone loves Cletus and what he has done for the hot rod nerds of the world and I'm no different. It's his car and he can do whatever he wants, but good ole boy or not, that's just down-home disrespect to a proven master car builder, IMHO
@@donm8317 hmm I don't think Kevin did much to the hood other then cut a couple turbski/ clearance holes in it. The body shop guys are the ones left crying if anything. Don't get me wrong the guy did great work setting up the car! I'm pretty sure he got paid handsomely to build it...
@@2pi628 drag increase with the square of speed, so at low speed the difference in Cd matters less and less (relative to itself).
That's a cute wind tunnel. We have a full size at work with dyno rolls and turn table (so you can got at any angle to the wind). Its powered by some old WWII bomber propellers! It looks impressive but I think it basically tops out at 150 km/h so not much faster than this one. It doesn't get used nearly enough these days because you can generally do CFD pretty reliably at those kind of speeds.
I love the highly technical aero efficiency videos like this, from a beginner in drag racing this is huge to anyone trying to crunch numbers after the 1/8th mile! wish I had the money to match what is taught here for my car lol
That was amazing !
Bully getting aero tested soon ?
Stay strong brent! We are behind you
Need sho’nuff in there soon 👀
Really interesting what you can learn form these. I bet a splitter on the Nova could help it a lot.
Technically if you got a plexi-glass cowled "engine bay cover", it would be called the Eagle Saving Engine Viewer and anyone calling it a hood would be a liar!
Kevin is going to learn so much from this day!!
He will definitely incorporate some of this info into his builds....and figure out some kind of sensor to monitor it.
Surprised they didn't try tapping the front grill to compare with drag coefficients and downforce/lift, if the cowl is pulling air in from the top, use that to duct carb setup, mitigate cooling flow considering minimal run time... maybe rework the roof/rear window area to lessen the turbulence on trunk deck.
it would be interesting to see the Elco with an air dam attached to the bumper, a tonneau with a bubble behind the back glass and some angle on the rear spoiler
Pretty sure a cow is more aerodynamic than LeRoy especially with a little hair gel
Say it ain’t so LeRoy is a “McFarland Aerodynamics” masterpiece 😅😂🤣
Well, Cleetus and JH did buy a cow named Leroy. Don't know if they checked the aero on that steer before, um, "removing the hood".
I think mullet needs a front air dam/spoiler and a roof spoiler too, just saying.
Cleetus: "Its always a BLAST visiting here"
Me: "Its a wind tunnel" lol 🤣
Cool video. I raced bikes(cycling)till 07 and the zipp wheels and helmets brought back some old memories...lol thanks and Leroy looks good.
someone's gotta put a dyno inside that tunnel. The turbos sucking air full rip will affect the air circulation for sure
The blow off is aimed straight up as well, might pick up some downforce
You might be onto something there, can you imagine this facility with a Dyno ... obviously you can because you thought of it. Great frickin idea
I was thinking the same thing. It would be super cool to see how much air the turbos consume at full rip.
Would love to see the lift/downforce on a dyno with 170mph wind speed hitting the car while transferring weight on a pull.....real world testing sitting still👍🏻👍🏻
@@lazylizard6532 no it actually creates less overall downforce, hence why it's not recommended, lol.

@@Dubz0408 Collab with garage54 or rob dahm would be sick

Ruby in her next incarnation/rebuild needs that turbo/engine stuck back under the hood somehow. The wind tunnel got me curious, a stock, base model C6 has a 0.29 coefficient of drag(vs 0.57 for mullet). Might as well use all that time the GM engineers spent in the wind tunnel with the C6 to your advantage. I know its not the Cleetus way, but the current setup is leaving time on the table IMO.
Aerodynamics are for people who can’t build engines
@@GeneralBigFoot And yet Ferrari makes some of the most aerodynamic cars in the world. He made that statement very early in his career 😐
They need a two piece hood that leave that big ol’ single hanging out in the breeze. That would look sick!

That ElCamino is SAWEEEEEEET! I never got the 1/4 mile specs on it (e.t./mph, engine size, etc.)
Cleeter and Motion should add a little tag to the hats for marketing purposes: "This hat has been officially tested in a wind tunnel and produces very little drag"

I would love to just work with Kevin for a day, just observing and learning, the way he analyzes everything for data to convert into going fast down the track is rad
Your original trip to the wind tunnel was the first Cleetus video I ever saw. Now I'm hooked.
Thank you so much Cleetus, vapor trial testing your HATS - cracked me up, & I'm with Anthony Nelson - those turbo would suck some air
Cleetus: C'mon Kevin we gotta go, we got streetcar takeover to prepare for!
Kevin: But muh data!
Never gonna forget old Leroy in there with his cardboard panels ☠🤣
Great test of the cowl hood. That’s why Chevrolet designed it for the Z28 in 69. Plus it looks good.
I want these numbers with the engine running. It’s an air pump with turbos. That negative area in front of the turbos should disappear as it sucks the air in.
Seems like those turbos are in decent low pressure zone, as much as I like the turbski's popping out of the hood they might breath better if they sat a little bit lower inside the hood 😁
Or raise them a few inches to catch the air forced over the front of the hood that used to go right over them
James’ Nova is definitely my favorite nova ive seen. The history behind that car is cool asf
That shows why promods have the turbos mounted the way they do. Right between where the air gets sucked into the cowl and exits through the wheel arches. I bet it would improve ait's as well. Interesting. 👍
HELL YEAH BROTHER!!!
Super nice seeing you on discovery to here in Belgium on FASTER.

some carbon fibre panels would look good

After seeing James lift number, I found what he needs besides more downforce, Controlling Wheelies with a Laser Ride Height Sensor. Cuts timing to keep him from going too high.
You’d think a wind tunnel for cars would have a bigger door
They do other stuff more often than cars. A lot of racing bicycles (you can see some helmets on the wall in the background), drones, apparently even residential items that may get caught in the wind.
badass video never seen that done with explanation. very informative thanks guys
James' Nova would hugely benefit from a front air dam and a rear drag spoiler. The air actually cuts down off the roof quite aggressively, so it would be quite functional. Also changing the hood and getting rid of the cowl would really help reduce the front lift.
Boy I'd love to get my car in there.
Kevin is such a kid in the candy shop rn learning about his work and how it affects the car and you can see how happy he is when he is watching the smoke.
Seeing how much air is getting pulled through the front grill is very good to see in my opinion. Looks like the radiator gets a ton of air through it
I'd be looking at forming a top for the back. Something that smooths the transition down to the rear spoiler.
Always love a bit of wind tunnel action ! Peace!
It would be cool to see some turbos scoop's extending out toward the front like having ram air
Remember the turbo is a compressor, so it pulls it’s own air in boost more than when it’s just sat. There would be an airflow change with the turbos spooled.
'do You have a fan we can turn on to get the exhaust out of here' 🤣🤣🤣 I was thinking how bad that must have been getting James' car in there with that spicy methanol
I’ve been to that tunnel several time. So much fun testing stuff.

Hood on with winglets to direct flow into Turbos. WIN, Win right there. Also deflector over back window to eliminate the turbulence there. Same for tailgate area and side winglets to streamline rear turbulence. Turbulence = huge drag. No turbulence = Slipstreamed car.
Leroy in the wind tunnel: 🐄
Nova in the wind tunnel: ✈️
I've got so used to hearing "month of freedom" that I got depressed after the intro
Lol
Get those turbos under the hood line and pick up air in the grill. Install a plastic dam just behind the radiator to keep the air out from under the el camino, or put a splitter on.
James needs that facia back and the same air dam mod as the el camino. Use tape to seal the cowl induction hood to the windshield. Get that air out from underneath the car!
Some river vortex generators along the back of the roof would help the low pressure behind the rear windows on both cars too
That was fascinating! Science in action. I thought losing the hood would wreak havoc with the aero, but no. Cool stuff.
I bet you had a tough time getting Kevin to leave the wind tunnel.
Kevin put up a vid of Soccer Mom in the tunnel. Check it out!
Jackstand definitely needs a front diffuser and about a 3 foot long drag wing..... and wheelie bars. 🤣🤣
Diffusers are for the rear of the car, you’d definitely not want one on the front lol.
Wheelie bars don’t go with radials
The piece of kit you're looking for up front is an air dam or a splitter. It does need at least a lip spoiler in the back to kill the lift.
Garrett in the wind tunnel "look what I can do" like the adult baby from SNL 😂😂😂
Cowl. Induction. It's literally in the name. 😆
Sometimes Cleeter shows how green he still is!
