  • Over the past couple of months, LeftLion Editor Bridie Squires and Nottingham’s Young Poet Laureate Georgina Wilding have been writing poems with loads of people in the city. They created a series of workshops, which took place in Bestwood, Bulwell, the city centre, Hyson Green, Lenton and Sneinton. The aim of these was to celebrate Nottingham, with the aim of bringing different communities together.
After playing around with poetry skills and techniques with attendees, and exploring what everyone loves about our city, Georgina and Bridie created a poem inspired by words written in the workshops. A Nottingham version of The Sound of Music song, My Favourite Things.
Nottingham City Council’s initiative Nottingham Together have been supporting the project, and LeftLion videographer Georgianna Scurfield has whacked together a video that sees local faces belting out the collaborative poem good and proper.

I heard a song on Radio 1 years ago, was a rap song that had a chorus that went 'N.O.T T.I.N.G H-A-M'. Was around the time Stereo MC's were big, but I checked out all the stuff on them on UA-cam at no avail - and after all those years, it's still an earworm - can any Nottinghamians help me??? Ta ducks.

I am entirely not familiar with what im about to mention but I have alot of family from derbyshire england, but one member from nottinghamshire pops up. would that essentially be nottingham? just wanted to make sure I tie together the loose ends in understanding more of my english roots. I am from philadelphia, but I have truly enjoyed the discovery of learning of my english roots.

Mushy peas and jacket spuds on the Market Square
Agamemnon and Menaleus and Goose Fair
The Cockle Man having a ciggy on Clumber Street
RIP, the Xyophone Man, your plinking was alreet.
Cobble stones and Parliament Street, the best pubs around,
Even in sandstone caves under ground.
When Robin Hood's statue is missing his bow,
And the Flying Horse is bereft down below,
Nana's got a cob on cos her wheelbarrow's wheel came off,
But a trip to Rock City and a Cock-on-a-stick
Means the old dog isn't quite so sick.

"Ranting for the downtrodden working class (Sleaford Mods)
Making Pet Shop Boys-esque trip hop (Bent)
Revering a socialist folkloric hero (Robin Hood)
These are a few of my favourite Nottingham's things"
