  • In Minnesota we have lots of lakes, way over the 10,000 most have heard, and in the winter they become traversable without watercraft, which means caches on islands are a bit easier to get to. Come along with gravitybear and I as we drive to an island, walk to another and gravitybear gets into a tight squeeze for a highly favorited geocache.

Thats a dream for me in the south to do that. 70 Fahrenheit in North Carolina today. So no chance of ice here!

We do what we can here in the winter, but sometimes I long for the warmer temps.

It was cold in the wind out in the open on the lake, but the rest of the day was quite comfortable.

An island cache you kinda turned into a P&G that’s cool! I wouldn’t have driven out there, I’d be too chicken (:
I have a built in face covering. (:

It is always fun to get out and drive on the ice, but I am careful about when to do it.

A century ago, that island had electricity and a training camp for the Minnesota Vikings, and was something of a resort destination from the Twin Cities. My dad took my brother and I exploring there a few times in the 1980s; at that time there was still a ruined two-story hotel on the island, with bed frames and similar still visible inside. I've been told it has since burned down.

It’s amazing to hear about the island's history. I am sure it is still a nice spot to visit in the summer. Thanks for sharing the history.

In the past week I have found @25 lake caches here in CT but I had to walk to them. Ice was not strong enough to drive on. Heck it was creaking and cracking just walking on the ice.

This is insane… I’d be worried, what tires do you use?

I am careful about when and where I drive on the ice. I do have snow tires on my car, but any tire would have worked in this situation. It isn't as slippery as you might think at that temperature.
