  • Getting behind the wheel of a 1979 Peugeot J7 van, with a 1.8-litre petrol engine and considerable noise! Apologies for the wind noise. Driving with the door open just HAD to be done.

    "Don't tell trendy people about them" Honestly I can't tell you how many Citroën HY's have been turned into coffee or 'frozen yoghurt' bars in my city. Breaks my heart. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this :D
    I'm an engineering student and I can't help but notice how flimsy the panels look on this thing, unimaginable that kids were transported in there. Then again it's way cooler than the buses kids get to travel in today.

      I don't mind seeing the h vans being used for exactly what they would have been used for back when they were new.

    Assuming the 2.5 diesel version is the XD3, I had the same engine in my LDV 400 series home converted camper van. Its a peach. Lovely cloppy sound and all the torque in a narrow range at the low end. Loved it.

    When I first moved to France 22 years ago, I remember the local bus company had a long wheelbase version of the minibus you are driving. Looked a little odd, but I loved seeing these on the roads and in old French films.

    I remember seeing loads of theses vans as a child on family holidays in south of France these vans also look simular to the British leyland Austin j4 van which also had the sliding front doors

      Me too! They always seemed to be carrying bread from what I can remember.

    That reminded me of my dad's Austin J4 van. He had a body shop specialising in commercial vehicle accident and contract repairs. It wrapped up in 1972 when I was 3 years old but I still remember clearly riding round in the bouncy bouncy roly-poly Austin with the doors open, no one bothered with seatbelts back then because they weren't mandatory and my perch was on the engine cover between the seats which was raised and I could see out of the windscreen. Health and safety? Naah, because 1972...

    Don't glorify Mercedes too much - the hundred-series vans were buckets! In 1999 my dad rented the Mercedes equivalent of this, a 1976 MB 207 school bus. That thing flat-out refused to go more than 80 km/h on the flat and I distinctly remember crawling up a hill at 40, pedal to the floor board! Very hard suspension, made our 1988 Mitsubishi L300 van feel downright luxurious in comparison. 207 means 70 HP Diesel engine, the same as the Mitsubishi but the L300 feels like a rocket compared to the Merc. I suspect the 207 is MUCH heavier but that can't be the only difference.
    I do think I saw an uncoverted H-van in Vienna, Austria just a few years ago!

    I've never seen one of these but the shape reminds me of the Barcas B1000 2 stroke van.

    Going to say this is the first time I have ever seen one of these, totally agree do not tell the trendy people or it will become a mobile overpriced chip shop or coffee bar!

    Love this! But as you say I hope it doesn't end up becoming a coffee bar!

    That reminded me a bit of the ex GPO Dodge Spacevan my Dad owned in the late 80's. Sadly his didn't have sliding doors.

    we used to have a 504 sedan. A great car, sun roof, very comfy...too bad American dealers wanted it to be more like our own Detroit rubbish :)

    I think the revs were at 3600-3800 mark at 50mph. The gearing is probably short due to its weight and power of the engine. Make the gear ratios longer the engine would struggle. It really needed a 5th gear.

    Not sure if you're reading comments to old videos but since you have to change the camera angle to get the open door on; There's wide angle lenses available that you can clip onto your phone like a clothes peg. They work brilliantly and shouldn't cost you more than a fiver.

    Is the J7's van engine under a cover like it was on the Citroen H-van?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  8 років тому

      On the H van, half the engine was in the stumpy bonnet. On this, the engine is more in the cab. Both have a removable cover. Both are pretty noisy!

    • @jaggass
      @jaggass 8 років тому

      HubNut VW Lt's also had a removable engine cover but they were fairly quiet. If Citroen or Peugeot sold the J7 and H-van in the UK Would it have been a success?
