Rest in Peace Alec John Such, you'll be missed

Great vid, as always. Even if Such couldn’t write great bass parts, he has a helluva voice and did really powerful high harmonies live.

I don't remember where I heard it but I believe the explanation as to why Hugh played the basslines instead of Alec from Slippery onward (outside of Runaway, which also lacked David, Richie, and Tico and was recorded before the band formed) was because Alec took too long to write basslines and they needed someone who could write them faster.

Hugh McDonald is a session musician that is why he is so fast and varied in his playing. Just as Tim Pierce who is the session musician who wrote and perform the solo of Runaway and later the solo of Please Come Home for Christmas (a Jon Bon Jovi single).

I'm glad that you mentioned which albums Hugh recorded. He joined the band LIVE in 1994, not in 1995.

There's some really cool, clever bass work in "Always" and "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night."

The reasons behind the switch in bassists was quite simple and admitted to by Jon Bon Jovi in articles and interviews. Hugh was the far superior and creative musician, a fluid and capable writer with an ear for pop and creating a hit. Alec however looked the part of a rock star and was a close friend. Bon Jovi was a successful, money-making hit machine from almost day one - and could get away with antics that wouldn't go over in a lesser, and less successful and wealthy band. They paid both Hugh and Alec significant money for their services, and no one really complained as everyone got what they wanted. Hugh got paid and got the satisfaction of playing on hit records, and massive industry credibility (insiders who hired session players always knew what was up), and Alec got the fame, the girls, and the fun of playing on stage, and being able to say he was in Bon Jovi (and good money too). In the end, he left due to exhaustion and disinterest in the rock and roll lifestyle, not any other reasons - although Richie Sambora did complain in a VH1 Behind the Music episode that Alec made mistakes playing on stage. Either way, when it was time for a replacement, Hugh was the natural choice. In the end, none of this matters to the fans. Bon Jovi gave the world a lot of great music that stood the test of time, regardless of who was on bass.

Alec was a pump on live stage, put a lot of excitement out there (of course, descent playing but may not that perfect), while Hugh quite sharp in studio but lesser presence on stage

Wow, this was really good! I am in no way a fan of Bon Jovi's music, but respect their longevity and ability to survive grunge. So much to learn here for any bassist on simply how to write a good bass line. I especially liked adding the transition notes on the 3rd beat into the next chord. It adds a bit of movement and melody to any bass line. Goes to show, there is always something to learn from other bassists. Cheers!

Good video my friend. Alec was a strong character and a great live performer. Prior to Bon Jovi he was in different Jersey bands like Phantom's Opera and Message (this last one with Richie Sambora). By the way 7800 Farenheit is a great album and Alec wrote those bass lines. saludos desde Perú.

I suspect that Jon had been listening to The Animals a bit at around that time (they did a medley of two Animals songs on their Keep The Faith: An Evening With Bon Jovi video). I think Fear was heavily inspired by The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place."

Alec (born 1951) was only a year younger than Hugh (born 1950), but looked younger - even though he was conscious of the age difference between himself and the other members of the band from early on. He was 43 when he quit, and by his own admission burned out. Jon Bon Jovi was still only 33.
Apart from the image difference, I wonder whether the reason that McDonald stayed in the background for so long was that, as a successful session musician since the mid-70s, he stood to lose too much money and couldn't commit to tour schedules.

No se si podrás traducir esto..en vivo quien tocaba el bajo..hugh escondido detrás del escenario? No me creo ni la mitad de lo que argumentaste..a parte de faltarle el respeto a un gran bajista como Alec.....

I'm sure that if a person of your intelligence was able to figure out what he meant in spite of a small spelling error then everyone else will be able to figure it out too.
