  • 5 Tips for Laser Cutting Material | Maker Experiment !!
    Welcome To Maker Experiment !!
    In this video, Trevor from Maker Experiment shares his five tips for laser cutting materials. He begins by discussing the importance of keeping the speed at 20 or lower when vector cutting to maintain better cut quality. He then explains the concept of frequency, which determines how often the laser pulses while moving, and demonstrates how adjusting the frequency can create different effects in the design.
    Next, Trevor emphasizes the benefits of masking materials before laser cutting to achieve a clean surface finish. He compares a piece of material with and without masking to showcase the difference in the quality of the cut.
    Another tip he shares is lifting the material off the bed during laser cutting, which helps reduce flashback and prevents burn marks on the back of the cut. Trevor demonstrates this technique using scrap material to elevate the workpiece.
    Lastly, he discusses the use of air assist during laser cutting. While air assist is typically recommended for cutting thicker materials like acrylic or wood, Trevor explains that for thin materials such as paper, turning off the air assist can prevent scraps from blowing around and interfering with the cutting process.
    Throughout the video, Trevor highlights the importance of considering these tips to achieve better results when laser cutting various materials.
    There are a lot of tips and tricks in the world of laser machining. These are five of my favorites.

    Hi, thanks for another great video.
    One thing I've noticed is how you (and other laser folk) refer to speed as a %. Power makes a little more sense as a % as you mention its a 60w laser, for example so you know it's a % of 60w
    My CO2 machine is pretty sizeable with a 160w tube and I set power as a % but the speed is always in mm/s I'd find it really helpful if you could mention the speed as mm/s as that's a little more universal.
    Also love to see any tips on heat forming acrylic post cutting. I've been doing that a bit lately but always keen to learn better methods.
    Thanks
    James

      I refer to it as a percentage because in the software for my laser, it is represented as a speed and that’s the input. That’s often why you’ll probably see it vs mm/s. The mm/s tends to come from the glass tube and lightburn world.

    No air assist for paper, good tip. Any light material, maybe even foam, no air assist for tiny shapes?

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  10 місяців тому +1

      Just depends on the usage and material. Foam I would use air assist because it tends to flame up.

    Hello
    do you know how to use Lightburn working with Epilog machine ?

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  Рік тому

      Lightburn doesn’t currently work with Epilog machinery.

    Hey Trevor, great video thanks. I've got an Epilog FusionPro 32, I don't see anywhere in software where I can turn off or on the air assist, is there another way? or am I missing something?

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  11 місяців тому +1

      If you have an external compressor, you just turn off that compressor. If it’s built into the machine, you won’t be able to turn it off as far as I’m aware.

    • @Batendor
      @Batendor 11 місяців тому

      @@MakerExperiment Yea It's built into the machine. Wished there was an option in software. Though I may try manually unplugging it from the back panel when the need arise I guess. Thanks Trevor.

    what is the masking material you used?

    • @MakerExperiment
      @MakerExperiment  Рік тому +1

      It’s a low to medium tack masking tape. Something like this would work. amzn.to/3pSi30A

    hi . im trying my 1st laser cuting project but i am having a problem. im curring 2diferent plexi material that i want them to fit inside esch other but while cutting they lose some material and they dont fit inside each other can u give me any tip please how to fix it

      I’d have to see a picture but it sounds like the kerf. You’ll have to compensate for that. I don’t have a video on kerf right now but I’m sure UA-cam has one. Think of the beam as a saw blade. It has some width associated with it. When it’s cutting down your centerline, you basically lose 1/2 of that width from the material which is most likely what you’re referring to.
