The majority of pilots were not flying with enough speed on final prior to flare, hence no flare authority.

Exactly. and actually it's the same with takeoffs too. Lower angle of attack and more speed are the key.

Great video, I have only 10 years of experience in Australia, so do not really care about the landings in this video, what I do have a question about is:
Just about every pilot that took off, put their hands straight down on the base bar before they were actually flying, not sure about Europe, but in Oz, that's a really bad habit to get into, pro or not.... Just sayin!

    • @billpain

Aye, most of the take offs looked pretty limp.

In Europe too. But these guys are not that good pilots. Although the choice for their gliders would like you to believe something else.... Every rookie can buy a topless or other high performance glider and try to fly with it. It seems they were all lucky to land without having broken anything. But it certainly was not due to their level of competence...

The main MISTAKE on landings flailing & unnecessary movements that affect your control bar in a bad way! Also an inertia device get a feel for when you run out of energy. Then put your feet down. Landing is when U pick your point & get slow & concise! on the control bar.

glad to see so many hang gliders together.....to all: must hold speed bar or down bars 1/4 in before flare....unless you guys enjoy whacks and buying downtubes

So many of you pilots are flying hang gliders in this video that outperform your capabilities as a pilot. Looks to me as a club of machos that want to show off with the specs of their glider but do not know how to properly fly them... What a showcase of amateurism and dangerous manoeuvres on the final legs of a flight this is....

@@1MarcVD yes agree with you that there are some bad landings. But, bad landings can happen even to the best. The spot landing in a kneeling position with Blue/silver Piuma was performed by the best hg pilot of all time😏

As you can tell from the video footage, there are natural-born pilots with excellent landing skills and some who, honestly, should try a different kinda sport.

What a stupid comment. The more one flies the better one gets at it. Everyone should get a chance to practice or at least try such an exciting and beautiful sport.

      @@dprout3392 Maybe, maybe not.
Landings should be practiced as the first thing when you start Learning to hangglide, and you shouldn’t progress to hill flying before before you master it.
      Ever heard about SafePro??
Its a bit to late when your got your nose in the ground with broken arms or legs (or worse)
If the pilot can’t control the speed during landing how can you be sure that you can control it correctly in air, e.g when you hit a termal.

@@jrgenolesen5569 Obvious, it took me hours of practice down a slope before my first double then first solo when I landed short into a field of strawberries. That was back in the eighties flying a Scorpion, then Atlas then...I can't remember. Loved it!
