EM 2: What’s in the box?

- Here Rich takes a closer look at the box for the EM2 and what it contains. This is an original item and particularly interesting with all of the compartments and dividers and largely complete!
Make sure you’ve watched the NSP video before you take it out of the box of course!
The .280 was a superior round in hindsight. This battle rifle was 25 years ahead of its time as a bullpup design. Thank you for the excellent work.
You're welcome Matt. If you like what we do, please head over and support us at www.patreon.com/vickersmg.
If US interference and influence didn't pressure NATO members to capitulate and adopt the 7.62mm in the 50s we'd have had STANAG intermediate cartridge service rifles for 70 years and it wouldn't have forced European nations to adopt and use FAL, G3 for decades. US saw the folly that was M14+7.62 in their plight of Vietnam and the MIC could stomach adopting a new platform and calibre in the M16 while the rest of NATO were stuck with .308, but they're now ultimately superseding with .277 "Fury"
@ch4ndemic I agree completely 👍
Absolutely, and the M5/.277 is turning into a debacle!!
I have done a lecture recently on the introduction of new ammunition types, based on the Mark 8z .303-inch. I’ll try and get it shared as it’s relevant here too. - Rich
I saw one chambered in 7.62 for sale in UK magazine "Guns Review" around 1984. It was £6,000!
Maybe this one!
A bargain!
There's just something about a case that has everything all nicely organized and a spot for everything.
Have you seen the one on the Sten? A Sten in a box! (Not your traditional unboxing video)

@@vickersmg Aw Yiss - nicely fitted box.
We have another one or two like that as well so will get some videos of those up soon.
Great video. I find the development and story of the EM2 fascinating. Thank you.
That’s because it is!
I would love to see a reproduction of the Rifle number 9.
I have always love the look of the EM 2 since I first saw it in a book *mumbles* decades ago.
They’re really modern looking but with that ‘classic’ wood aesthetic too.
Very nice guys, great collection addition 👍
Thank you. It certainly tells a nice part of the small arms development story.
This is the "unboxing" I always wanted.
Glad you like it! We will get some more of the boxed items out and do something similar. There is at least one more that viewers will like!
That winter trigger guard is an impressive detail, I'm surprised that they had the foresight to account for the possibility of fighting in very cold conditions. One is used to hearing of newly introduced weapons (particularly the SA80 series!) not faring well in various different environments.
India made one for their poached version of the FAL/L1A1.
Given the Korean War was going on during this particular development phase, it was something they were actually doing and working in at the time. Plenty of winter-specific kit being developed during the Second World War too. There’s always the parallel use of when wearing chemical or nuclear warfare clothing too.
A rifle that was way ahead of its time. Its cartridge, the .280 British, was a bit more powerful than the 7,62x39 M43 and the 7,92x33 Kurz, which no doubt influenced its development. It fired a 139gr ball at 2 530fps for 1 980ft.lbs. US pressure for standardisation of the 7,62x51 NATO led to its demise.
Almost similar to .275 Rigby that one (7*57 with 140 load instead of heavier ones )
We will do some more work on ammunition choice as it is an interesting subject.
3:00 is the best part of the video ha ha great video as usual Rich.
There was a complaint the other day about too many pictures of you in the marketing! It might put people off signing up to www.patreon.com/vickersmg
@vickersmg ha ha ha that moustache has its own IMDB page by now
@vickersmg Look forward to seeing more of the EM2 in the future happy to help with kit if needed.
Very cool guys!
Thanks. Glad you liked it. We’ve got a few more boxed firearms like this so will do similar for those.
That green spare parts box looks just like the tins that my dad had for pipe tobacco. He used the empty tins for keeping small DIY parts like screws. They were all the same size, so probably a standard over different brands. Maybe the rifle team ordered a few?
EDIT: a 1oz tobacco tin is 95 x 60 x 25mm, a 2oz tobacco tin is 110 x 80 x 25mm.
The ‘standard’ size is just so it all fits in the breast pocket of a battle dress blouse, be it tobacco or a rifle cleaning kit!
What a fantastic acquisition for your collection.i wish someone made a copy for the civilian market.
An interesting idea!
@vickersmg straight pull only with our stupid laws but the fun factor would be top notch.
@sherwoodforester4666 well the laws do at least allow us to do what we do and we’re grateful for that.
So that’s what heaven looks like
It's all subjective Matt. We'd prefer a nice Vickers Class D* of course!
@ can’t say I blame you, but the EM2 has always utterly fascinated me :)
It is a fascinating piece. We will be sharing more of it in the coming months so make sure you're checking over on Patreon too.
An EM2 in 7.62. I knew a few were built so see if the idea could work, but didn't think many, if any survived. How rare is that beast?
Only 59 EM2 were made in total, with those in 7.62 less than a handful.
@@vickersmg @philbosworth3789 In fact 26 X2E1 Automatic Rifles were made by Enfield and BSA - we have a number of those. Total EM2 production by my count was 65. Only 20 EM2s in .280/7mm were ever made so in fact 7.62x51mm rifles outnumber the 'classic' flavour. Then there are the guns made in the various compromise calibres... It's all in my book ;)
Thanks Jonathan. Much appreciated. I was going by memory and scribbled notes from when I last went through the book. - Rich
Vickersmg I saw this example years ago, a stunning piece of British smallarms development. Just a crying shame you're missing a magazine...I happen to have a mint one if you want to complete it?!
@andysavill8580 mmm, we may well do.
Incredible
We like to think what we’re doing is pretty incredible too.
Lovely. Thanks.
You’re welcome Dermot. We will have more to share soon.
@vickersmg Keep up the good work. I'm an op research nerd who spends not enough time on firearms so the odd dose of vickersmg keeps me grounded. 🖖
Great stuff Dermot. Please do head over and support us at www.patreon.com/vickersmg as we’ve more than enough there to keep nerds busy!
@vickersmg Would love too but bit skint after PhD. I'll get round to it eventually. 🤞
Lush bit of kit, 1st saw one on a visit to Warminster in Phase one and pushed to learn more.
Great. Having this means we’re learning fast too.
"What's in the box?"
Road not travelled.
It was indeed a choice not taken but we will never know where that road would have taken the British Army.
@vickersmg in case of british army we indeed don't know as most popular althistory scenario about .280 British isn't about britain, it's about US troops in Vietnam having FAL loaded with .280 instead of M14 in .308
This would have been a Gem in the fallout series somehow.
I believe it's in the Fallout London mod.
Not one we’re familiar with but it’s likely cool for any game or series.
Will you do a video on the em2 in British 280?
When we get the opportunity yes I’m sure but there are plenty out there already really.
Very cool! Where on earth do you source stuff like this from in the UK? I'm just getting started with collecting S7 handguns and I'm having a hard enough time trying to get hold of a Swiss Luger
We’re in a very privileged position that we can have items like this. As we’ve said elsewhere, we never say never. Being a Section 5 Authority Holder and a Registered Charity puts us in quite a special position. If you like what we do, and want to learn more from our growing archive and reference library, please do support us at www.patreon.com/vickersmg
@vickersmg You guys definitely deserve the support, you're doing great stuff. As I said I'm just starting to dip my toes into section 5 stuff myself with the section 7.1 handguns, I've got a lovely Broomhandle Mauser and a minty S&W Triple Lock in .455, but locating what I'm after is proving much harder than the usual S1 stuff! I'd love to hear a bit about how you track down rare S5 guns to add to the collection
@@surgeon591 We have a Broomhandle Mauser as well as it's on our list to produce an NSP and drills aide memoire for very soon, with a full manual to follow. Limited demand with reasonable supply with auctions being one of the more open sources.
@vickersmg The Broomhandle's are lovely things, I'm very fortunate to have the matching stock with mine. Yes the auctions have been my source for what I've got so far. I narrowly missed out on an RFC contract 1911 in .455 auto at the last Holts auction, pockets weren't quite deep enough unfortunately. Do you ever import guns from Europe?
@surgeon591 not directly. We saw that M1911. Very nice it was too.
Gewehr EM2 mit OVP RARITÄT !!!
(ovp, originalverpackung, that's how they say on eBay when the seller is a German lol)
Absolutely!
