Honest question, why do us riders always look down at the bike when it makes a noise? What do we expect? To see a giant hole and see the piston going up and down? Don't get me wrong, I do the same, but besides doing it for the ~content~ to show we're recognizing a problem, why do we even look? haha. The cash register ding as you pull the clutch plates was *chefs kiss*. Awesome that you're doing this job on the bike, Jeff! I'm 31 and just getting into doing more of my own work. Would I rebuild a 450 4 stroke engine? No shot, but I'm much more comfortable doing more and more bike maintenance stuff now! Good luck on getting the 2banger back running!
LOL I do that too, its like I’m looking down expecting to see a bunch of smoke or oil coming out of a certain spot like “here is your exact problem, good sir!!” I suppose looking down and seeing it *isn’t* leaking is a positive in some way at least, haha.
I normally check to make sure the chain isn’t falling off😂 but other than that I’m quite useless. Thanks uncle DeeO!! Once it’s finished and you’re healed, we’ll have to shred the smokers together
well as a rider and a mechanic I usually don't do it to "LOOK AT" anything, but when you look down it will better funnel the sound to your ears and you can get a better idea of what part of the bike, or the engine, the sound is coming from...
All you need is $20 worth of rubber dampers and you'll be back at 100% ... And buy a second set ... As the way you use the clutch you will be doing it s couple times a session
I would definitely get some porting work done if you go with the 300 cylinder, maybe get the head machined and put a different pipe on it too. It may lose some top end power otherwise. The big bores are more known for their low to mid range hit, may require a little work to wake up the top end power a bit.
Consider ordering a good Engine stand to keep it from wobbling or falling down. It's really annoying trying to do something and have to balance the engine up. Also, Ziploc baggies will be your best friend. I used gallon sized so I could fit entire part assemblies into a single bag to keep everything together. And the bags help keep dirt/dust from touching internal parts.
I have been racing a TC 250 for the past year and it's great. 45 hours on one clutch, but it could have probably got a lot more out of it. The only problem I had was the power valve broke. The small plastic piece of it broke and would not allow it to go above 1/4 throttle.
That sound is coming from the clutch, or from the transmission(maybe teeth broken or needle bearing). In ktm engines(2016->) there isnt any rubber dampers on outer clutch basket. Those dampers are inside inner basket. I think you shoul do full engine rebuild(by yourself). Best tip I can give to you: find specific ktm repair manual for your model and there you will find all info about anything you can ever need. Please ask If you have any questions, I will help.
Sorry to hear about the ole girl but the moral of the story is that you were an astute enough rider to know to listen to the bike and what she was telling you. So Kudos to you my friend. You caught the problem before it got out of hand. Looking forward to the build. Gotta Start on myself.
The springs dont give you more power. Just adjusts the rpm the powervalve starts to open and how long til ita full open. Red spring and as much preload on the adjuster means all the hp hits hard and for a short rpm range.
@@TheShift1313 check out jd jettings dyno charts. Also i would never recommend adding a lot of preload to the spring. Usually around flush will do the trick.
@@Zach_summers i wouldnt suggest it just trying to say what it did. I should have clarified. And the jd jetting will show the same peak power at the same rpm but the red spring coming in later. Now torque is a little different but from my experience and testing on my own bike it doesnt increase or change peak power. Just the starting rpm. So red spring is like 1000rpm from that hit to overrev sign off. Am i missing something? Best torque is the red spring. Slavens offers a 4 set of springs that has one that hits like red but signs off like yellow. I ran the red spring for a bit with the kreft power dial but i prefer the stock spring for the singletrack. I am happy to be proven wrong though. Maybe i am misrembering the jd charts. I know they do a lot of preload position charts on just a single spring and its possible that was burned in my brain.
Completely aside from the clutch, it still sounds SUPER lean. You need to do a sparkplug test just to 100% be sure that the lectron is set correctly. Grantee your sparkplug will be very light colored or even white, which is not good. I can tell right away by the sound of the engine when you let off the gas and gives you that high idle. Also sounds like it almost flatlines at high rpms. I don't trust lectron's stock settings. Put one on my yz125 and it was too lean right off the bat. I had to adjust it to make it richer(more fuel less air) and then it worked great. I would strongly recommend looking up how to do a sparkplug reading to tell if your too lean. I could be wrong but it still sounds really lean to me through the video. If you take your sparkplug out and its very light colored and burnt its too lean. Black and wet too rich. You want it to be brown, like the color of cardboard.
You can pretty much do this rebuild. The biggest thing to be sure of is when you are doing the crank that you balance it correctly to ensure perfect operation and zero vibration in your hands. Enjoy the content, you do a really good job Jeff. Thanks You will also need afew specialty tools. Like fly wheel and case pullers as well as a crank press. Good luck. Let us know how it goes!
@@dormantmenace you are exactly correct my friend. I really hope JWALK gets real help if he actually goes that deep! He needs to learn though if wants to continue racing. The cost of it all is enormous.
Coming from someone that went to school for bike mechanics buy the factory service manual and take a lot of pictures during disassembly for reference on things.
The fix to this is to take a 1/4 round file and sharpen the shifting claw that hooks the shift drum. It's a stamped part and can roll off creating a false neutral effect.
Same issue on my 18 sx250. Rebuilt it and during the process noticed that the shift drum would catch the case on clutch side. Filed it where it was catching and walaaah! smooth operation. Upon first ride noticed perfect shifts no more sticking or false neuts
I really recommend shipping your cylinder off to millennium technologies once you start seeing scratching on the inside of the cylinder. They do a great job at coating the inside with nikasil and putting it back to "right out of the factory" spec with the bore, just make sure you send the cylinder off with the smallest 250 piston the bike takes so that they can get an accurate measurement. The bike will WAKE UP and the nikasil lasts longer than factory coating
Be extremely careful to ensure the gasket in between the engine blocks is placed correctly! It is extremely thin between the crank in the gearbox. It broke my bike when a raceshop did not mount it correctly.
I'm a Yamaha and Kawi tech at a dealership and a bike builder at a race shop. I'm not claiming to be a super genius and know everything. But I know this from my own experience. Any time you buy a used two stroke, even if it runs great you wanna go ahead and factor in the money you're gonna spend on re-doing the top. Especially if you get a good deal and the bikes super clean. Always check the compression too if you can before you buy. And when you get it home. Pull the head and jug off just to get a good look in there. If it looks good put it back together and save your parts for when the bike does need the top done. If you keep a fresh top, clutch and chain on that bike they last a long time. Maintaining a 2 stroke is super easy once you know how to do it. You can do the top in an hour once you got it down. Worn out reed valves will make it run crazy also. Also super easy to check and maintain. A loose down on compression top can damage the bottom.
Yeah I think it is definitely clutch related. Doesn't sound like a bottom end issue as that would be a pretty constant sound at idle. Not sure on the KTM clutches but the outer clutch basket usually has little rubber cushions between the basket and drive gear on the back that help dampen the forces I bet those are starting to go.
Number of things it could be. With that many hours on the clock riding the way you ride it’s time for a top end to prevent you from melting it down or scoring the cylinder walls with rings that have gotten too sharp and started to fully wipe the cylinder instead of leave a thin film of lubrication. I just did mine at 80hrs but I was trail riding mine and dialing the motor in so they’re weren’t hard hours. 20- 30 hours at full race pace or about 40 hours of hard practice motos and it’s time for a fresh slug in these things to keep ‘em running forever. Not sure that’s where your noise is coming from but it’s where I would start given the hours on the motor. Check the bottom end too but it should be ok.

The bike sounds like it might have an air leak. Might be a crank seal on the on the ignition side. The boot where the reed valve goes can also get cracks in it. Just some ideas.
